Nikon D3100 D-SLR

D90 replacement

D90 replacement

The only reliable information is: the D90 replacement will be announced until September 21 before Photokina.

It is more than a rumor, comes from the mouth of Nikon (press conference in Denmark on August 19 -- only the probable date September 15 is rumoured):

Svend Erik Nørklit from Nikon welcome

10:02
Svend Erik says that Nikon was out of the crisis in six months

10:02
since the first April, sales exploded and there are now problems getting products to stores ...

10:03
Svend Erik is pleased to announce the successor to Europe's best selling camera D3000.

10:03
Many new features in the new D3100 and four exciting new telescopes

10:04
Svend Erik gives the floor to Thomas Lorenzen to tell about the new products

10:05
"It is a true family camera". "Simpler than ever"

10:05
We asked customers what they like. But Nikon has also asked what they like to see was even better. Therefore, Nikon has developed D3100

10:06
Higher resolution of 14 megapixels. Finally, full HD video. It is actually the first camera from Nikon with full HD.

10:07
Questions are welcome - I will try to solve them for all of you, sitting out by the screens and follow.

10:08
D3100 is still an entry level camera, says Thomas Lorenzen. He believes in video in all DSLR. Newly developed sensor.

10:08
[Comment from Søren ReinkeSøren Reinke:]
How come when having a camera in D300/D700 class which can record Full HD video?

10:09
@ Soren: I think we will see at least one more launch before Photokina. But the question is whether it is a new D300 or D700. I doubt it. I think the D90 stands for replacement within.

10:09
[Comment from Michael TrebbienMichael Trebbien:]
D3100: Performance at high ISO - how good are they compared to what we know from eg D300s?

10:10
@ Michael: We have not seen some pictures taken at high ISO. I will return

10:10
Thomas states that there is a video editing directly into the camera - and you can pull stills out directly from the camera.

10:11
Then store the camera a JPG file in full HD resolution. So approx. 2.5 MB

10:12
Thomas tells about the D3100 have an auto setting so the camera can find out which program is most suited to the picture.

10:13
Nikon believes that customers only interested in image quality but not in how to choose the right program.

10:13
[Comment from Mikkel Mikkel:]
When will a replacement for Canon G11

10:13
@ Mikkel: We should probably ask Canon about instead.

10:13
[Comment from Hans H Hans H Half Half:]
D3100, there vippbar screen, built-range shooting?

10:14
@ Hans: No, the camera has not tiltable big screen. I ask the range photography on ilidt

10:14
[Comment from Poul Poul:]
Which examiner sits in

10:14
@ Paul: A 14 megapixel APS-C sensor. I think that it is a Sony sensor

10:15
[Comment from Jesper Kristensen Jesper N Kristensen:]
Family Camera - this is probably without compromising the manual options?

10:15
@ Jesper: Yeah, there is full manual settings - with RAW.

10:18
Ability to take pictures in silent mode as on the professional cameras. There is also due to focus on the camera. Can find 35 faces.

10:18
[Comment from kevinkevin:]
when can we expect testing d3100?

10:19
@ Kevin: Very soon I think. A good guess is that we have the test using the Zoom six coming in early October.

10:19
[Comment from DenisDenis:]
When can we expect to D3100 can be purchased in stores? stands for and to buy a DSLR because we will soon have a junior

10:19
@ Denis: In late September it is reported.

10:20
NX2 software now also with video editing

10:21
Full HD at 24 frames per second - but the program can change it to eg 25 frames per second

10:21
[Comment by nicholas nicholas:]
will be the successor to the D90 use the same sensor?

10:21
@ Nicolas: it's hard to say. But muligeden there. But one could also imagine 16 megapixels

10:22
Do you think that Nikon D3100 is a worthy upgrade for D3000?
Yes
(100%)
No.
(0%)

10:23
The price of the camera with a 18-55VR is 5,295 kroner. For sale in late September

10:24
The camera can provide sharply during video recording. It seems quite convincing. I tried it just before the press conference began.

10:27
[Comment by Kasper Solberg Kasper Solberg:]
AF during video recording? - You will hear the focus motor in the video clip?

10:27
@ Kasper: Yes it will be possible, informs Nikon

10:27
[Comment from Kristoffer Kristoffer:]
No microphone input?

10:27
@ Christopher: No, there is no microphone input

10:28
[Comment by nicholas nicholas:]
the camera with auto focus motor?

10:28
@ Nicolas: Yes there is power to AF in the camera too.

10:28

10:32
[Comment from Michael Michael:]

10:34
[Comment from Kristoffer Kristoffer:]
That is, the new AF motor is noisy so much that you can not really use it for video?

10:34
@ Kristoffer: One must surely turn VR off, video

10:35
[Comment from Pallet Pallet:]
VR?

10:35
= VR image stabilizer
There are finished samples on several of the telescopes

10:36
Svend Erik also says cryptically that there are still a half months to Photokina. It will be the biggest bet at Photokina Nikon ever.

10:37
[Comment from Mikkel Mikkel:]
When coming D5000 in stock again? Greetings Japan Photo

10:38
Nikon with a response directly to you, but stocks should be filled up within a month at D5000.

10:38
[Comment from John John:]
What happens with D5000?

10:38
@ John: D5000 continues

10:38
[Comment from Kristoffer Kristoffer:]
But it is not just AF and VR will be much talk about? So that itself keeps the focus while filming in HD. But if it is noisy, it may indeed be just great ....

10:39
Of lamer not much. but I feel personally that VR noisy very much on just video.

10:40
[Comment from kevinkevin:]
what about a EVIL camera as example the Olympus Pen and Sony Nex. Nikon has something up our sleeve which to Photokina?

10:41
@ Kevin: It's nothing new about an EVIL camera. Sorry.

10:44
@ John: Not all of them. You in the middle. Nikon examines just how many there are. A good guess is five.

10:44
[Comment from @ @ Lillie Lillie:]
Will we see something new on D300s front of this year in the form of a replacement?

10:44
@ Lillie: No. I think not. I think we will see a D90 replacement.

10:45
[Comment by nicholas nicholas:]

I think the things I'd sell my T2i for, to get this Nikon, would be:

(Considering the camera is set to ISO 100.)

Better noise pattern in general.
Better noise in the blacks/natural shadows.
Less blockage in the blurred areas.
A more equal and natural color redention.

Easier, cheaper lens range.
Flip out screen.
Smaller body.
In board photo/video editing/effects.
Better menu system (Folders for photos, ect ect)

Bonus things I'd wish for:
Built in IS.
Viewfinder that changes with the settings.
Mic Input
Remote Input
Many crop modes.

Who knows what else. But hopefully the nikon will do those first two sections on that list, and I'd buy it.

Do my eyes decieve me?
Does it say 720/25p in the specs????
Where is the 1080/25p?

720/25p would still be a step forward for Nikon.
Conforming 24p to 25p is NOT ok for several reasons.... here are my top two:

1) Flicker & interference from 50Hz lighting when shooting 24p
2) Audio speedup is not acceptable when shooting live music events!

Bring on 25p, Nikon!

manual shutter control solves #1, which is one of the reasons why i think that's the most important change necessary. the d90 has many flaws but the only one that's stopped me from using it is that lack.

Full agreed. That's the point.

This is IMHO based on Nikon's performance in the past.

This can be on opinion, but you'll likely get this one.

Less blockage in the blurred areas.
Blocking was pretty heavy in the Nikons. Probably not.

A more equal and natural color redention.
I saw a video from one of our members here (from Denmark?)...and it was SICK (D90). Custom color thingy... THis one will be close. Maybe you'll get this ....maybe not.

Easier, cheaper lens range.
Uh...Nikon lenses...cheap. NOPE. Not gonna get this one.

Flip out screen.
Not on the D3000.

Smaller body.
YES. VERY SMALL in fact.

In board photo/video editing/effects.
YES.

Better menu system (Folders for photos, ect ect)
We'll see....depends what you're comparing it to. Personal preference.

No.

Viewfinder that changes with the settings.
Prob. No.

Mic Input
No.

Remote Input
No.

Many crop modes.
No. (See Lumix LX5)

Good for you! I'll likely be buying it either way. Just need to see what it's image looks like in certain circumstances. If it's NOT manual control, (it appears to have something to do this)...if not...then I won't even do that much...even just for a test. :(

Here's hoping. Thanks for the list....it helps me think through the yes/no list. :)

I've shot Nikon professionally since the 90's, and the D90 is the best body I've owned.

But for Video? 2ti and a couple Nikon-EOS lens adapters.

For the $$, all I'd ask of a T2i update would be better compression, no AGC (Magic Lantern's working on that anyway) and HDMI out for monitoring, without shutting off the on-camera LCD.

Sounds like the major things we can count on for the D95 (video-wise) will be:

1080p; CMOS sensor for less jello (D90's Jello is insane); and maybe a better video codec?

The full-time liveview AF sounds promising though - if it really works, could open some amazing opportunities. And manual control of video's a must.

The T2i is a very capable DSLR for video - especially for the price. D90's one of the best digital still bodies ever made. Hoping Nikon can catch up to Canon this fall - those lens adapters are a pain.

But I'll still keep the T2i for 720p/60 - that's some nice slowmo. D95 with a 60p option would be pretty slick.

CMOS sensor for less jello (D90's Jello is insane)

CMOS Sensor is the root of the "jello" and "skew", CCD sensors are the ones that produce 0 jello or skew. What Nikon is hopefully doing is IMPROVING the performance of the CMOS sensors with the latest version. Is important to know the real facts.

I still don't see any evidence for manual control on any of the D3100 documents.

Guide Mode sounds like Canon's CA (Creative Auto) system, where you select "Blurred/Sharper Backgrounds" and "Darker/Brighter Exposure"

Doubt the camera will say the what value the auto ISO is either...

If Nikon have disabled Autofocus and metering for some of their lenses on the consumer bodies, I doubt they'll enable those features now. Same with proper manual control for liveview.

Loooooking forward to D90 upgrade however!

Don't know if someone brought this up already, but at 0:30 min in this ad you can see the LCD while the guy is recording a movie. It shows information about shutter speed, aperture and ISO, in this case ISO is set to auto.
But I think it's interesting that you have these information provided during movie mode, it seems quite reasonable that shutter speed can be set manually...maybe ISO is auto only

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttOeXOQVYZg

According to Nikon Rumors there is no manual control of ISO on the D3100, it is fully automatic. Their source is http://tinyurl.com/34cl5mj .

That is very disappointing. Hope they don't make the same mistake with the D90 successor being released later this month.

Sounds like it'll have the same controls as the d5000: aperture priority and exposure compensation/lock. Since you can see the settings the camera is using while filming (as clearly seen on dpreview's site) you should be able to tweak the camera using aperture and exposure to get reasonably close to the results you want. It is a beginner's camera after all; Nikon will surely want people demanding more to buy the upcoming 7000 (we should know on the 15th). I would still love to see some native 1080 clips from the camera and am glad Nikon decided not to use the rather restrictive AVCHD standards - hopefully the bitrates will be pretty robust

That's the same on the D90 and D5000 though, and only affects stills not the D-MOVIE mode! It'd be fantastic if we got confirmation of shutter control though. ISO can be guesed I guess...

I'm pretty sure they hold back full control for D7000. In fact I hope they'll have some surprise up their sleeve for it. Also, on 15th I think, Pentax will present their 2 new DSLRs; having owned a K-7 I loved the video image and especially the image stabilization built in the body - super smooth shots without any kind of stabilizer, with any lens. Guess we can't expect that from Nikon though it's such a great feature for video.

the specs say "h.264 advanced video codec" which sounds like avchd to me. do you have a source?

The way I understand it AVCHD is a standard for camcorders developed by Sony and Panasonic. It also uses advanced h.264 compression but has some limitations, most notably it limits the maximum bitrate to 24 mbps. It also uses the mts structure which has a bunch of extra folders and files that just get in the way if you want to copy your movie files onto your computer for editing. MTS is a great format for playing directly back onto an HDTV but that's about it. Canon's DSLRs use h.264 encoding but they don't stick to the AVCHD standards and have much higher bitrates (they need them since they can't encode as efficiently as camcorders)

Just following up, according to wiki h.264 is also known as advanced video codec:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264/MPEG-4_AVC

If you look at the article you'll see that AVCHD is just a subset of AVC/H.264 that has additional restrictions placed on it. Canon has been using h.264 compression on their DSLRs ever since the 5DII, they just output them in a .mov container. Files with an .mp4 extension also commonly use h.264 encoding. I would guess that Nikon would go with one of those two formats.

Since Nikon was not a founder or previous participant in the camcorder-centric AVCHD format I see no reason they would want to jump on the bandwagon now, especially since its restrictions are getting a bit long in the tooth
