Nikon D3100 D-SLR

Anyone know if it has an external microphone input?

from what I've read, it doesn't

EDIT: sorry, let me elaborate...

I've read things like "major physical changes: (...) Microphone and speaker for movies", which seems to refer to the onboard mic

BUT, I have also seen this:

and I think Nikon's remote doesn't use a TRS connector, so that could be a mic input

This feels and sounds like it should have come out a year ago

Nothing happens before its time. LOL. You have to take into account that Canon, Panasonic, Sony have video camera division to draw research and development from. Nikon doesn't. Video is a brand new endeavor for them. For as much as I criticized my beloved D90 for its video I am beginning to like what I see on the D3100. Now we have to wait on the "jello", skew and noise factors as well as the manual controls.

one things for sure...this cam is tiny

And the label on the rubber port cover simply says A/V out...guessing it's not going to work both ways

Relative to what... you're D90? Not exactly a high hurdle to beat.

Exactly. But common sense says a lot of room to improve. People need vision to understand the future and that is in short supply these days. 1080p24, 720p24/30, manual ISO and hopefully manual aperture and shutter speed that is going in the right direction. We will see how the new sensor performs in the skew, jello, moire and aliasing department. Disappointment is in the eyes of the beholder.

It is supposed to be. Is an entry level camera for regular consumers.

Do we know if it has manual ISO and shutter speed? I can't find any info on that. I was really hoping Nikon would at least catch up to Canon.

Well considering this is Nikons ENTRY level VDSLR it seems like it has some pretty good specs and general improvements from the first gen video capable Nikons..... the inclusion of 24P/25P/30P frame rates in the 720P mode is a step in the right direction. Hopefully we will see these frame rates added to the 1080P mode in their upcoming PRO VDSLRs as well.

It also seems a smart move to differentiate their low end camera with slightly lower res 14MP sensors rather than the rumoured 16MP pro sensor bound fro the D90/D300 replacement. If their upcoming Pro DX models also have the rumoured High ISO capability of a D700 they will be VERY good low light shooters.

I will reserve judgement on the video capabilities of these cameras until I have had a chance to use the camera myself or someone credible like Mr Bloom has actually tested the camera in a pro shooting environment. If they have reduced aliasing and moire artefacts, implemented a decent codec and allow full manual control of video settings the higher end models could be very enticing. Nikon have the best colour representation and low light performance of any current DSLRs...if they nail some of these other issues they can get themselves back in the game.

One mans "vision" is another man's wasted time.
How long will you wait for nikon's '"vision" to catch up... two years? Five? Ten? All the while you could've been shooting with something more capable.

Sure, but benig better than your own prior version is worthless if everyone else's current version is far superior.

As long as people have been waiting for Scarlet. You work with what is available now and wait for nothing. You make money with the camera that suits your needs now. I can wait ten years for Nikon and if the camera they produce in ten years serves my porpouses then I will buy it. If something else is better for me then I'll buy that.

And you know this because you have tested them against the competition right?

You are speculating about a camera you havent even seen yet....as I said I will reserve judgement on where Nikon is in the video market when they release their Pro VDSLRs....if they still fall short of the competition then my D700/GH13 combo is perfectly adequate for my still and video needs now and into the future....but I havent written Nikon off just yet.

D90 Replacement is anticipated for a 9/15 announcement.

Get a 2TI and a Photodiox lens adapter if you have Nikon glass & need to shoot now.

You might end up keeping it - the 60p setting on the 2ti gives you some really, really nice slowmo at 720p.

1080p promo video, looks pretty good.

That's the same video we've all been talking about thus far. I'll stick by what I said earlier, skew seems way better, but overall quality is hard to tell since it's over exposed & appears to have been shot in 'vivid' mode causing colors to bloom & bleed.

Yes, but now @ 1080p. I had already seen that:

But that one is official from Nikon Polska.

I wouldn't expect so much encoding improvement on more expensive Nikons to be release soon, but better ISO response and full HDMI output perhaps, yes.

The new autofucus is really revolutionary. Canon and Panasonic will surely follow. RED is also prepping such feature, so have an idea.

Overall it looks pretty nice. Over exposure and choice of color settings is all user choice or error. For what I can see the image and the image stability seems much improved. Much improvement should not be expected in higher end cameras. The replacement for the D90 most likely will have the higher megapixels on the photo side and be bigger and sturdier than the entry level D3100. Can't wait to try them.

Doesn't look different to the D300s or D5000 to be honest. I actually think the other video samples (at the website's equivalent 960x540 ratio) look better, but that's more to do with the user than the technical.

Can't tell much from the video there, except skin tones look grey (neutral, low saturation settings?) and despite over-exposure - the colour does the nice mush we like about Nikon.

Looks like a nice cheapy camera. Is there any confirmation that the Guide Mode allows full manual control of ISO/Shutter?

True but, although you sound bitter towards Nikon, I think your D300s shot videos look far better than your GH1 shot pieces... but that's the eye of the beholder I guess =]
