Nikon D3100 D-SLR

Yes, and that's what I'm referring too. I can't surely have information on the Nikon's once the camera is not here yet. But that's what I understand from Nikon's features release. That's why I said it is revolutionary, not exactly the technology but its introduction with motion in full HD. Not exactly only for stills or limited use if applied to motion, as of today. GH1 has been the first to have AF as much close as a camcorder can be. Panasonic as same as others like Canon etc will follow Nikon's step.

EDIT -- RED has been developing a system like this for their 5K/4K/3K modes, announced just ten days ago. Here's the link:

panasonic already lead with motion autofocus ;)
im just guessing here but im betting nikon's would be slower than panasonic's

This fanboism is funny. Why slower? Nikon is up to 32 faces, GH1 only 6 faces...
They say:

The Face Detection function detects up to 15 faces in a scene at a time...

What do they mean by this:
"Autofocus operation is interrupted while the camera is tracking the subject. "
My interpretation is that won't hunt. It will likely wait for a new 'set up'. That's why I'm afraid I have to disagree with dcloud. I bet Nikon will offer a better AF system.

But dcloud didn't answer to my question yet...
still waiting

And you know this because you have tested them against the competition right?

I have certainly tested existing versions as I own both a 300s and a GH1.

I can also read the specs on Nikon's own website and extrapolate from that. I know that it does not have 60p, for instance... something that is important to me. I also know that my GH1 and the current Canon's do have 60p, hence in that one importatnt aspect the current gen competition is still better than future gen Nikon.

I also know that my current gen GH1 has silent auto focus, the future gen Nikon does not. Chalk up another win for current gen.

And, if the above 18mbit quote is corerct, that is also inferior to the Canons and the hacked GH1.

Anyone knows the bitrate of this D5000? It doesn't seem to be on pair with the D90.
From this source [ LINK ], it is mentioned:

«(...) using the D5000’s relatively high bit-rate of just under 40Mbit/s.»

MJPEG, so apples to oranges, D5000 included.

I also know that my current gen GH1 has silent auto focus, the future gen Nikon does not.
How do you know? 'cause they say the AF noise can be captured? The disclaimer is easy to understand. Their offer doesn't even include mic port for external sound acquisition, so it is not difficult to figure out why they say what they say.

And, if the above 18mbit quote is corerct, that is also inferior to the Canons and the hacked GH1.
You don't need higher bitrate for everything except in certain circumstances.

Take a look and aside in one of those shots if memory serves (and it is for detail in the landscape, not exactly the typical scenario to deal with motion), tell me where would you need the higher bitrate for?

How do you know? 'cause they say the AF noise can be captured?

Exactly. Nikon themselves say it... should I doubt them and believe you instead?

.. tell me where would you need the higher bitrate for?

Why do we want the ability to shoot at higher ISO? Why do photographers want more pixels? Why does anyone want higher quality anything?
That was shot on a GH1. I have a GH1... do you? Have you seen the differnce between the GH13 and the GH1?
Why would you not want a higher bitrate?

And again... you are using year old current gen gear to demonstrate how good next gen Nikon gear will be. LOL... you are proving my point. If these are the specs that Nikon is going with then they are still behind and will be dramatically behind when the GH2 and 5Dm3 come out.
The way this is shaping up seems to indicate that Nikon's vision = "be as good as the last generation of our competitors".

Unfortunately, you're missing all the points.

Exactly. Nikon themselves say it... should I doubt them and believe you instead?
First off, both sources are saying the same. Take a better glance before starting to shoot. And yes, in the same circumstances, you should believe in me instead. If not for the background... :-) then, 'cause I act under an unbiased point and am not focused in sales. I also don't have to explain that there's no way for a mic port in a new release.

Why do we want the ability to shoot at higher ISO? Why do photographers want more pixels? Why does anyone want higher quality anything?

I don't act as a fanboy against this or that brand just for the sake of it. I try to take lessons from the technology that surrounds me, if I didn't before through my education/training. A higher bitrate can mean nothing. It can help but be overkill for another purpose.

Of course, I'm speaking for people who are used to work with different acquisition tools (in my arsenal you'd find 35mm/16mm cameras, cine glass of different manufacturers, Nikons and Nikkors, Canons, Panasonics, 3xGH1 and a 4th on the way among other goodies); not for that one who is interested in one-camera-show. In this case, I can probably recommend the GH1. Is that your point?

I have certainly tested existing versions as I own both a 300s and a GH1.

Completely irrelevant to the video performance of a D3100......I dont understand why you even brought it up.

I can also read the specs on Nikon's own website and extrapolate from that. I know that it does not have 60p, for instance... something that is important to me. I also know that my GH1 and the current Canon's do have 60p, hence in that one importatnt aspect the current gen competition is still better than future gen Nikon.

Fair enough...if you need 60P. Maybe the next Pro VDSLR from Nikon will have it. This is their cheapest entry level model and they may want to differentiate their product lines with both still and video features....However, I am now guessing just like you, but notice I dont present it as fact.

And, if the above 18mbit quote is corerct, that is also inferior to the Canons and the hacked GH1.

Depends on codec implementation as has been amply demonstrated on the GH1 with the ommission of b-frames....you really do make a lot of assumptions about a product you havent even used yet.

You may well be right about all these things...but at the moment your are just speculating...if it turns out you are correct it will be only because you guessed right. but please dont "extrapolate" everything about a camera from just a fact sheet and then present it as evidence. I and many others are at least prepared to judge the camera after we use it...not before.

I'm waiting for the D90 replacement to see if Nikon plans to challenge Canon's supremacy in the HDSLR world. Rumors has it out next month and it should tell us a lot about Nikon's priorities.

If they come out with another lackluster product (I'm speaking of the video side only), we will all have our answer.
