Believe me, if I "went after" every post that contained a grammatical or spelling error, I'd have more posts than Barry! :laugh:ullanta said:Hey, Haakon, how come you never go after "should of" and "would of"?
Don't get me wrong. I don't aspire to be any kind of "literature police," and I'm the first to admit that I mistakes all the time. I'm just always surprised that more people don't seem to read over what they write before submitting it to the world, because how you write and how you speak has a large influence over how others perceive you (for better or worse). You may not think about it much, but it's true.
The your/you're thing seems to bother me the most because for one, they are completely different words with different meanings that cannot be interchanged. They don't even sound the same if you're pronouncing the words correctly. That's a lot different to me than someone who writes something like "Oh, and BTW..." because that's obviously just lazy internet shorthand and "BTW" doesn't mean anything else. I would wager to guess that most people who use "your" in place of "you're" aren't doing it intentionally to save precious keystroke energy. Another reason is that I have increasingly seen those kinds of "lazy" mistakes creep their way into general use - the more people use them in public outlets like these, the more people become "desensitized" to the error. I bought a CD about a week ago and one of the song titles is "What Your Doin' To Me." Come on, that's just terrible!
Apostrophes are another huge example of this... you see things like "CD's for sale!" all the time. Over the holidays, I couldn't believe how many "Buy your Christmas tree's here!" signs I saw.
I often hear retorts like "this is just the internet, not a college essay" or something similar, but that kind of comment seems so silly to me. Does that mean the only time you care about presenting yourself to others is when you're forced to try to earn a grade? Personally, I care a lot more about how my peers and fellow company think of me than I do about teachers or strangers.
Anyway, I made that post mostly because the thread subject was about the massive shipping delays and I had a clever way to work that into my sarcastic grammar lesson.
