next shipment?

Frankly if they did know, they probably would cover it with an I don't know. Things could go wrong, there is always QC, stateside. It just isn't the way this business works. I have been working supply side for 30+ years and no one ever knows for sure until they have them in their hot little hands. I have worked for a couple of dealers and we knew but we also knew that things can change so until we had them, we didn't say. I am not in the allocation part of the chain, and I am not saying that they already know, I am just saying that if they did, the safer route would be to say I don't know.

Best,

Jan

I understand, it is still killing me to not have one and is the middle of January.

Maybe if we could get some more footage released? Can you talk to Tosh?

The Power of Expectations

The Power of Expectations

Numerous studies have been done on what people experience when they are subject to delays -- everything from late planes, driving in traffic, and -- you guessed it -- product deliveries. It is one of the most common stressors today. People who are regularly bound by schedules -- as I am sure many are here -- are most likely to experience this type of stress. They also tend to be the least tolerant of delays. Over the past few weeks, watching people's patience dwindle over delays in getting their much anticipated HVX cameras demonstrates this stress pretty well.

Boiling it down, the studies show that delays cause people to experience anxiety and anger. This is driven by a sense of powerlessness, an inability to control the situation. Now here is the interesting part: much of the stress experienced by those waiting could be mitigated through information. The premise is simple and commonly used in several industries: those in control would provide "behind the scenes" detail of the situation to those being delayed.

As an example, several airlines and metropolitan transportation agencies have found ways to reduce the stress level of passengers during delays by providing them with information -- telling them in copious detail why their journeys are delayed. While not fixing the problem, the studies found that the passengers were more accepting of the situation and were more patient as well. Resentment for those in control decreased while empathy increased. Most importantly, passengers were also able to make alterntive arrangements. In short, they didn't feel completely powerless.

Very interesting Ian.

When I think about it I'm much more tolerant when I know what to expect.

If my train is late and I'm told it's 10 minutes late, I'll read the paper for 10 minutes. If my train is late and I'm not told how long its going to be, then I'm fretting and angry because I don't know when I'm going to get home (or wherever it is I'm going).

very much makes sense...

If someone says "your product is getting the latest firmware... or we are fixing xyz or we are making sure there are no dead pixels..." I'd be more happy to see my product delayed...

Ian that's exactly what I've been talking about.

It wouldn't be difficult for Ms. Jan C to get on here and throw us an information bone, even if the info is infavorable to Panny (firmware problems, etc.) But to not tell us anything at all? That's playground bullsh*t...

And this is the sort of comment that keeps me from posting more frequently on this board. To release exact numbers is not anything that Panasonic would do. Why would we tell the competition this sort of vital information. You seem to forget that this is not a quiet conversation being held on a person to person basis between us "friends." And then because I do not know you, I probably would not tell then. It is propietary information. Rush has made a post that says we are delivering more cameras this month, and we are.

And so once again I go back to just sitting in the background and wondering what ever happened to civility and respect as human qualities.

Best,

Jan

To clarify, I never said once that YOU suck Jan, I said the COMPANY that you work for sucks because they are not being honest and clear with their potential consumers. As a potential consumer I have the right to know what is going on behind the doors , we all do, saying 'I don't know' or giving a run around answer is not going to make me or anyone else feel better about the situation, it's just going to make us more pissed off...and what's the real reason for not releasing that information, I have a hard time believing its because of product competition between other companies, it sounds more like competition for consumers dollars, you don't want to lose buyers if you told them the real truth about delivery dates because you know very well that there are a lot of people on the fence and ready to jump to the other side (including me) if they don't get INFORMATION or a camera by a certain time.. I'm not being needy or greedy about this, I'm just saying, if your company says they will ship at a certain date and time, THEN they only ship a few, THEN they don't say anything at all about when or when they will ship more, that's shady, and that weakens public support for your product... Once again, no attacks on you Jan, I'm just attacking the way in which Panny handles these kinds of things..

Why not just tell us what the delay is about?
Why not say, we are fine tuning a noise issue, broken doo dad, or whatnot....
And it should be ironed out in a week, and shipments should resume in a quantities of 200 per week.....

Why can't panasonic say something like that?

I would feel warm and fuzzy inside if Panasonic told me that the camera was severly broken, they lost the blueprints and had to start all over and it would take 2 years to get my camera. I would really feel good about that, no joke. It's better than not saying anything.

It's like when you tell your girlfriend you love her for the first time and she doesn't say anything back even though she hears you...

RGD, please give it a rest, okay? The message has been sent loud and clear, and I think we're all tired of the ugliness and negativity that's permeated the boards recently.

Was it "shady" when JVC delayed the release of their HD100 for almost four months? First promising it in June, and shipping nothing in June. Changing their website to say "coming in July" and then shipping nothing in July. Changing their website to say "coming in August" and then shipping maybe a couple at the very end of August. I was told I was #1 on my dealer's list, and I didn't get mine until September 29th. That's four months after they initially promised units.

The first batch of HVXs got shipped the day they said they would, and some people have received theirs. They got 'em within four DAYS, not four MONTHS.

I know nobody's happy at having to wait, but I think nobody is happy with reading constant complaining either. Jan has stated that there is another batch shipping this week, and another batch shipping next week. Do you really, honestly believe that Panasonic is delaying things on purpose? Do you think they prefer having posts like yours out there, rather than posts that say "got my HVX today and it's awesome"? Think about it.

They're getting them out as fast as they possibly can, and as fast as is prudent. Any other course of action would be asinine. So while you may not like waiting (and nobody does), can we at least wait with some patience rather than cluttering up the forum with ugly crap about "shady" business practices? Please.

I'm sorry you have to read those kinds of posts, Jan. I think the fact that we're all conversing over the internet... where people can hide behind screen names and say whatever they want... well, it makes some people feel like they can cross any line they feel. I am sure you know, however, that there is an unbelievable amount of respect for you on these forums, and we know that the low shipping numbers are in no way directly related to anything you've done.

I think more than anything, there are a lot of anxious people who can't wait to get their hands on the camera. I must say, the newest footage I've seen has really restored my faith in just what the HVX is capable of.

And just for record Haakon, I'm not crossing any internet lines by saying panasonic sucks, they make great cameras, however, their marketing/shipping dept. sucks... I would tell this to Jan in person or anyone else working for Panny without hesitation, the internet just happens to be the fastest way for me to communicate this idea of suckage..

Nice post, Ian. Kind of an uncommon one on this board. Sort of says it all, hey?

But I'm sure Panasonic is well aware of the effect the delay is having on everyone interested. And I'll bet that if the product they release is solid and not TOO delayed in its delivery, all this stress will blow over and be forgotten until the next time they release a revolutionary product.

So I imagine that they're not far off from delivery and if something happens to delay things further, they'll have to mitigate it with info.

Until then, there's no point in raging at Panasonic- Jan's already told us that they're keeping info tightly tethered to their leash of doom...

Barry I don't think they are delaying on purpose and I understand other companies practices like JVC, but come on, we're talking about Panasonic here. We are DVXusers on the #1 DVX message board site in the universe. A land where Panasonic reps converse with other filmmakers/buyers. All I'm asking, and all everyone else is asking is for a little more feedback..Not a roundabout, George-W-Bush-pulling-out-of-Iraq-answer, oh, we're shipping some in January...

And just because no other camera maker in the world doesn't give their buyers information like ship dates and quantity, doesn't mean Panasonic has to follow that sheepish, stagnant model of doing business. Panasonic is the only progressive, corporate camera maker that actually listens to the end user and makes adjustments to their lineup. I can't think of any other camera company that does this, and yet, when it comes to delivery and promises, we are left in the dark just like everyone else.

All I'm asking is that Panasonic be a little progressive and forward thinking about delivery dates... If they take the time and energy to listen to people to get ideas about a new model, they should communicate with those same people about why a camera is being delayed and why everyone has to wait, we're not talking about Pokemon here, we're talking about a $6000 piece of Japanese money making equipment, I think it would make every little bit*ch like me happy and would keep threads such as this ONE from ever being made in the first place..

No more horse beating, I'm over talking about this issue on these boards, I will let other people say what my mind is thinking.. Personally I won't invest in Panasonic if I don't here or recieve anything by Valentines day..

peeeeeaaaaceee !!!

hmmm, usually its the other way around here.....:undecided

Jan says a shipment will be sent this week and an even larger one next week.
That makes me warm inside- GREAT NEWS 'cause my camera is in one of those two shipments. I go back to the information my dealer passed on to me almost 2 weeks ago from his rep (unofficial of course) if you ordered your camera before Thanksgiving, your camera will most likely be on its way in Jan. Perfect timing for the shipment this week or larger one next week. Now, don't go betting the ranch on this information, but the stars are aligning and I have faith in this information. I predict Everyone who ordered through October will have it by Jan 30th. Of course this is a prediction NOT a promise, since I am in no position of authority to promise. Just a prediction- Carolina will win the Superbowl too...
Now everyone can relax a little.

Hopefully you are saying that with as much conviction as you wish Panasonic would let you personally know all of their supply chain details. I have a feeling you're not done though. :P

standard business

standard business

you can't praise panasonic for treating their customers great and then slam them for keeping customers in the dark. this is standard business practices and will always happen when mass marketing to consumers/prosumers is involved. just imagine all the whiners out there wanting to know where their z1us or dvxs or h1s were when they first shipped and supplies of those were short. now how are you any different from some complaining guy on a waiting list? panasonic shipped their first hvx wave to their important dealers and customers high up on the waiting list. obviously you're not as important to panasonic as the lucky few who are now playing with their hvx cams. you know there's a high demand for these cams and they're not producing enough to meet demand. what else do you want panasonic to tell you?

Well I hope this is not your Nostradamus prediction powers at work because clearly Seattle is going to the Superbowl. Therefore your clairvoiance is set backwards. This means, no one will be receiving any HVX this month :(

JK...about the HVX, not Seattle
