nex-ea50 and pwer zoom

This looks awesome! Any word on the DR? Man if it just had nd filters and an eos mount (I know not from Sony) and good (11+) DR this would be one of the most exciting cameras ever...

We'll most likely have to wait until the unit ships before getting a really good impression of the DR and overall image quality. My suspicion is that the ea50 shares the same sensor and "guts" as the VG20 (or at least derived from the VG20), so the footage from the two may be similar.

Any word on bit rate, s/n ratoi and color sampling?
Also, I hope it's as easily adaptable to Nikon lenses as most Sony cameras. Then you'll have your f/ stop.

Oh yeah, and off board recording capabilities?

Per the info here, it shoots AVCHD 4:2:0 at up to 1080p60 at 28mbps.

It's got an E-mount like the rest of the NEX line, so adapting to Nikon lenses (or any others) shouldn't be a problem.

Interesting design for the shoulder pad, extends out on rails to put the eye loupe in the right spot. Seems like it'd be very front-heavy, but I imagine the whole camera is pretty light:

That loupe has to go then the camera can move back.. (would need a new loupe)

That'd help the weight distribution a bit... Not sure why they went with the whole sliding shoulder pad instead of just shortening up the loupe to begin with. Doesn't look like there's any way to mount a counterweight/battery plate on the back either. (Edit: looking at it again, if the shoulder pad didn't slide out, that handgrip would be too far back... would need an extension arm like the one posted in another thread here today)

Still, really interesting camera. The first fully ENG-styled large sensor camera in the prosumer realm. I expect a lot of HVX/EX1 owners are going to realize how much of a compromise a converted still photo lens is (servo zoom or not) after coming from their video lenses. Not to mention pulling focus on a S35 sensor when you're used to 1/3" chips.

Interesting. When they first mention the kit lens in the video, the title says "NEX-EA50H Only"... Is the £2740 price for the kit or the body only?

I hope the snido C300 muppets are smarting with their loans

whoa, buddy - take a breather and tone down the insults. This looks like an interesting camera for a specific niche of videographer; no need to slam users of different gear and likely very different needs.

Fair play. It was not a very fair thing to say, I think my deeper point is that tech is changing, and it is important no to be drawn in to an expensive camera if you cant pay it off in a year max

I also stand up against elitism in filming and cliques, company BS, and fanboy attitudes

I hope the new sony helps break that down and let story shine through

As for fulfilling different needs, they are both 8bit crappo-vision, S35, one with a well placed viewfinder, the other not, one with a decent stabilised fullrange zoom, the other not, one with Af the other not.. :)

Hmmm. I've been monitoring prices of the Sony FS100, both new and old, these past few days. The FS100 (both kit and body only) just dropped in price by about $700 (I think) today at BHhoto, if I remember correctly. I wonder if it's just coincidental and not as a result of this announcement.

Wow, Sony is really coming out with a lot of cameras. Interesting
that there is a digital zoom which works with the
zoom rocker. That might be cool to add to the
fs700 with its 4k chip.

I think one thing to keep in mind is that the sensor isn't the same as FS100. It's an APSC sensor from still camera line. You have to wonder about the moire, line skipping, etc ..

A question

If it is APSC sensor Just like a still camera.
is it crop 1.6 or it is actually s35mm which is as much as i remember crop 1.5 something.

It's from an instant rebate that run till end of the year.

Here is my take, we'll have to see the final version and specs to find out, but... It should have similar performance to Fs100 both in low light and rolling shutter. This is being produced specifically for event videography, where low light performance is critical. I would argue there is no need to 'protect' Fs-100 as it has been out for 1.5 years and they are already upselling early adopters to the fs-700. Even if it is a nex 5f (or whatever the new model is called) sensor it should have a pro level processor behind it.

Looks like a proper inner-focus, inner-zoom lens, so you can use with a matte box, lets hope. If this gets it right, and not severely crippled relative the fs-100, and ships for about $3500 or less, I could be seriously interested. I actually expected a camera like this to be announced at NAB in addition the the Fs700, as they usually have a camera at this price-point. This is the kind of camera that could make you money all week, and take out and make little movies with on the weekend.

At the very least it is something new to talk about while waiting for the BlackMagic to ship.
