FS7: New Sony F7 XDCAM 4K Super 35mm Camcorder

I have to say, I'm a little chuffed that Sony have stolen my 15mm rod mount approach for the EVF on the FS7 - I've been harping on about that for almost two years now. Glad to see it finally going mainstream :)

And what is your 15 rods mount approach?

Osslund, your pics are interesting - thanks for the observation.

Update-

Adam Wilt who has a demo version just measured the lens center to base at 73mm, aprox the same as my F3 from my own rough measure just now.

I believe the Sony rod support solution for the FS7 will list for about $500 (and likely sell for less) and the height will be correct at 85mm.

Note that the F3 needed a spacer underneath to raise it to the correct rod centering height. And the photoshop comparison images are a little off in scale as the FS7 lens mount is so small compared to the F3's PL.

My illustration could be wrong. I took the measurements of both cameras but it could be the FS7 is measured as the microphone mount as the highest point, if so they probably share about the same height bottom to lens center. By looking at the front of each camera it does look like the lens mount is higher on the FS7 than on the F3. But it can be an illusion.

I have a rods support from Movcam for my F3 and was hoping it will fit on the FS7.

Sony have a bottom plate to mount rods onto the FS7 and by the looks of it the lens mount on the FS7 is to high to end up at 85mm lens to rod distance as is the standard. Maybe the Sony bottom plate/rods adapter involves a modification of the bottom of the FS7?

This is interesting, but let's wait until the camera really is in one of our hands.
I just preordered one... :D

Congrats! I have a deposit in on one with the kit lens. I'm hearing early Nov. for Toronto. Can't wait to see more samples with the camera. Now to pray for XQD cards to go on sale. not holding my breath. At least the cheaper N cards will do HD recording which tend to be longer and have no offload time.

I had one on order but cancelled it and moved to another supplier that actually offered me a better deal. So shop around and you might end up a little less.

Here in good ol'germany the official price incl. VAT is around 7k €.
My dealer made a 6k € starter price. That's a lot less than the FS700 at it's introduction.
I didn't really buy it but made a deposit to get it this year. They said I'm no.6 in the line
and will hopefully get it in december...

I just hope to make around 2k € with my trusty FS100 and it's batteries, grips etc.

I don't see me buying that new lens. It's nice but it's just to lomg at the wide end for me.
28mm is to much. I need at least 18mm at the wide end.
If the FS7 supports lens correction I'll take the very cheap 18-105/4,0 and live with that
sloppy manual focus if the iris is assignable to the handgrip dial.
I just dream to have the camera always in my hands. Right hand on the grip - left hand on the lens.

We'll see. I have a "Tech-Breakfast" with the FS7 at my local dealer at october 21st... :)

I agree with you about 28-135 . Personally I think it was a mistake on their part if video people was their primary market.
Put an EF m and let it work with speed booster and I'd be down in a second.

So that leaves the Sony 18-105 ESLP with instant correction, the Zeiss 16-70, or the Canon 24-105 w speed booster which amounts (I think) to a 16-105 at f2.8.

i think they all have stabilization (which is the big deal for me) and the 18-105 has power zoom and AF if needed . The big question is how do they look and how sharp are they? Have to try out all 3 I guess.

The US list on the VCT plate with shoulder mount and 15" LW rods is $1198; street price is $990. I currently have that included with my Abel order but by the time the kit appears (I wish Nov, but heard Dec), I'll see if there is a better third party option.

Very excited about what I'll be able to do with FS-7 and then FS-7+7Q.

I think the power zoom Sony 18-200 will also work with the FS7, but in HD only. Not sure about the 4K, but the 18-105 only works in HD with this camera. I guess it loses focus or vignettes in 4K?

Hmm.... Where did you read that those lenses only work in HD?
That's a big limitation.
Juan Martinez told me the limitation of the 18-105 was that instant correction didn't work in HDR over 60fps and not in RAW.

It looks like only two lenses for now. The 18-105 and 16-50pz that do barrel correction in HD only. It'll shoot 4K but no correction applied.

Thanks, I didn't notice that or didn't realiZe that it precluded 4K. Well that means its the 16-70 or the 24-105 with speed booster for me.
Unless the Zeiss is much sharper I'll probably go for the 24-105 for the extra stop.
(When I tested the 24-105 previously though I thought it was maybe a 1/2 stop slower than a true F4 )

What about the 18-200 ? That doesn't need lens correction does it? Should work in 4K?

Yes. The FS100/FS700 don't have software in camera to correct for barrel distortion. Any lens that work on these cameras will work in 4K.

This is good news. The 18-200 is a lot cheaper than the kit lens. It'll do until you can get a lens upgrade.
I used the manual 18-200 a lot on the FS100.
