New Redrock Micro EVF for digi cams

Hey All

We'll publish all the final specs on our product web page to answer these follow-on questions. Barry makes a good point there are a lot of different specs so we'll lay it out in video and still terms.

Regarding the Red EVF, we probably shouldn't have mentioned any third party companies at all. Our point was not to suggest this is a direct replacement for the Red EVF. The microRemote won't add super high-end features such as an optics heater, for example.

We did mean to convey you can have a high quality EVF at a reasonable price. Like the microMatteBox for Red, a lot of people appreciated a really good product at a great price.

Thanks

Brian

I have had nothing but EXCELLENT QUALITY SERVICE from Brian the CEO himself as well as the RedRock staff in the Past. just relaying my experience here.

@kurth - prototype materials aren't always the most attractive, but more importantly it shows the form factor and rough size. The final version will be smaller, not have those proto 'bumps', and will be lighter as well. The proto is actually fully functioning.

Also the microEVF absolutely outperforms the LCD on the Canon cameras.

Thanks

Brian

But you have to remember, the HDMI output on the canon cameras while recording will not be higher than the LCD screen :D

Second, if it doesn´t outperform the oncamera lcd , then what´s the point ?
The point is it's a viewfinder, not a monitor.

Look at the number of people who are spending $400 on a Zacuto Z-finder, just to be able to shoot with a Canon DSLR in daylight. This product is a viewfinder, so it's usable in daylight, and it also is freely repositionable -- it doesn't demand you to stick the camera up to eye level, or demand you to twist your body to fit where the camera is at. Plus, being an HDMI input, you could use it on practically any camera (including a Red One even!) so it's not tied to any specific piece of hardware, unlike something like a Z-finder.

Everybody makes monitors -- if you want a monitor, get one. But for those who need a viewfinder, it's nice that a (presumably high quality) product is being designed for that niche, at a really affordable price. Obviously it's not for everyone, but for those who need it, they need it - so kudos to Redrock for identifying that user and making something for them.

Yes, but that's the fault of the Canons, not of the viewfinder. The viewfinder will work from any HDMI source, so you could put it on an HMC40, a Gh2, an AF100, an HV40, etc.

Any chance for component connect as well as HDMI?

That's true of the 5D MKII, but afaik the 7D and 1D MKIV output hi def HDMI during recording. I hear the resolution is at least 800 lines. I think the HDMI signal is only good for monitoring and not HDMI recording due to other factors.

I like the little Olympus EVF solution for the Pens. For DSLRs and potentially for the Scarlet too, if this could be modded or reproduced, it could be pretty useful.
I think there is definitely a market for this RRM EVF, as long as the screen res is high enough and it's not some cheap panel repackaged and sold for DSLR rig prices.

An 800xN RGB viewfinder that retails at this price is quite affordable. I know the part costs and the design specifics of a product of this type.

Led and lcd stuff is fascinating...I've got a pile of laptops collected over the years as one thing or another failed. It's always cheaper it seems to replace the dang thing than repair it.
I'd love to try and take a laptop screen , power it and run a video signal into it.
I can take an alarm clock apart, but well, putting it back together is problematic.
That's why I look to greater minds to come up with solutions like the evf!
