New Redrock Micro EVF for digi cams

This would be great for a Scarlet body (once it comes out)!
Bomb EVF is 3200.00 so this would be a cheap option.
Not sure about DSLRs. I'm buying a 60D / GH2 and wouldn't want to add a $600 accessory for something that's already very much a compromise.

Am I the only one that thinks it looks like it is made of corrigated cardboard rolled into a tube??

Again to be fair on RR (thats twice now) its not a production version - Im sure the production model wont be cardboard

but yes it does look like this has a cardboard wrapper at the moment

Hey Dan,
Sorry to hear about that. I know Redrock is now a far different company from what they were in 2008, and for the better. They now have a dedicated support team, and as a reseller and friend of the company, I am happy to see far less errors in shipments/orders as well as a much better response if an error is made. Of course not an excuse, but I think in 2008 when these DSLRs hit, everyone was caught a little off guard with demand and overwhelmed.
I hope if you need more gear you'll give Redrock another look over, especially when their EVF comes out

Really? I had the EXACT same issues with RRM december of 09, well actually November and December of 09 and into January of 2010. Their customer services is, with out a doubt, the WORST CS i have ever had the misfortune of dealing with. They would rather lie to you than actually find out simple answers to questions. I ordered parts from both RRM and Zacuto on the same day and even though I was assured by RRM CS that the part I was ordering was "in stock" it took 6 WEEKS to get to me. The zacuto stuff was at my place the next day, and I only payed for standard shipping.
As much as I would like to have this EVF I will not be buying one.

Bomb EVF from RED has programmable control functions, a heater to keep it working in sub freezing temps, and I am sure very robust construction. Everyone who has used either the Bomb or the old version Red EVF agrees that it is hands down the best they have ever seen.
That said, I would like to try one of these on a Scarlet. Might be quite adequate for my needs, but I will wait until the bugs are worked out.

You get what you pay for. I'm also quite sure the Red Bomb EVF is more rugged and may withstand harsher shooting conditions. But if the RR EVF works for that price, better resolution and bigger than the Bomb EVF that's pretty amazing for that price point... I'd even say it's unheard of! I don't know of any EVF that cheap.

However, someone ought to really go down to TX and show those 5D guys how to pull some focus. My god it seemed like Brian was giving a demonstration to the POV of a drunkard. :)

That was LA my friend, city of talent! Hahaha seriously though it was at the photo cine expo for anyone who was curious.

In case anyone was wondering, it has 1.2 million dots of resolution. Got that tidbit from RedRock on vimeo while pointing out that a GH2 (with a 1.52 million dot viewfinder and HDMI out...and you know, a camera) only costs $300 more than this. However, of course the target markets and resources are very different, and RedRock is a small company, so for those investing thousands of dollars in pro camera systems $600 is quite reasonable....just kind of weird that they'd stick it on a 7D at the tradeshow.

Hi All

Just wanted to clarify a few things.

but yes it does look like this has a cardboard wrapper at the moment

That's part of the temporary prototype materials so it does look a little funky. Also the proto version we showed is also larger and heavier than the final versions that will be smooth, a bit smaller, and lighter

This would be great for a Scarlet body (once it comes out)!

Just to be clear it works on any camera that has HDMI out, including the forthcoming Panasonic MTS AF100.

the GH2 has a built in 1.56 megapixel EVF...

I might be missing something here, but the GH2 has an LCD of 420k dots. The microEVF has a resolution of 1.2m dots

We have more details on our web page www.redrockmicro.com/evf and of course we're happy to answer any questions here as well.

"1.2 million dots" - Brian, can you clarify?

As I understand it, the Red one is a legitimate 1280x720. Are you saying your EVF is higher-than-720p res? Or are you using the individual red/green/blue count, which is a common thing for LCD manufacturers to quote, but isn't the same thing at all, and would mean that it's half-720p res? 800 x 480 x 3 = about 1.2 million pixels, but it sure isn't in the same league as 1280x720, obviously.

In case anyone at Panasonic is Listening:

You could take a note here, highlight it, and underline it.

You should be selling a separate mountable EVF with an HDMI connector. Since you can fit a high res one in the GH-2 - I'm betting you could make the EVF a standalone product for $400 or less, and also make it compatible across brands. You could have made it the kit standard item with the AF-100, as an option for the GH2, and compatible with anything with an HDMI. Whoops. Guess you missed the boat on that one.

Also, regarding the cardboard construction. The prototype is probably corrugated cardboard, but don't worry I'm sure the final version will be made of at least corrugated plastic. Hey, they had to cut corners somewhere right?

That's a joke by the way.

I feel sorry for these accessory manufacturers, post-DSLR revolution.

People have no complaints about putting a $2000+ lens onto a $600 camera to get the best out of it.... but if someone brings out a great accessory that costs 50%+ the price of the body, people say it is too much.

Really? You feel sorry because an entire cottage industry exploded basically overnight? What else would they be selling right now? Dof adapters?

Apparently the RRM EVF is an LCD. So it would have less RGB resolution than the RED EVF that uses LCOS sequential color technology.

It's not a DSLR. It has an LCD, 420k, AND an EVF, 1.56 million dots. GH1 is 1.4 million.

Anyway, question for RedRock, who manufactures the LCD? I know epson makes the one in the GH1/2...I assume this is a part, not done in-house.

So, what is the actual resolution? 800x600 RGB? And what HDMI modes does it support? Will it do 800x600 native 1:1 pixel?

..... really lame debut- sorry. First , never show a prototype with terrible aesthetics. It´s better if it didn´t work, but at least looked good ! It looks like they should have used a beer can instead ! Second, if it doesn´t outperform the oncamera lcd , then what´s the point ? I´d rather give another couple of hundred to smallhd for a 800line monitor myself. I guess whoever did the marketing for those camouflaged deerhunter slr rigs also was behind this ?
