New Redrock Micro EVF for digi cams

It does seem pretty affordable if you think how much your shoulder rig is going to cost you in a professional setting.

If your looking for a cheaper solution you could go for a small SD monitor like the Ikan v2500 and mount it with a bendable arm and a loupe on it. Obviously this method isnt as high quality for shooting but on the t2i your watching an SD image on any external monitor while recording which for me makes pulling focus pretty hard.

The Ikan monitor is pretty cheap though. All you need next is a power adapter for it and a way to mount it (it has a 1/4 20 in the bottom so it shouldn't be hard)

The only problem i have left is to find a loupe that will fit nicely on a 2.5" screen/

Problem with the Ikan monitor is that it's only half of SD resolution. A definite no-go for focusing, if you ask me.

320x180 pixels vs 800x450 pixels? On 800x450 you can focus without aid, on 320x180 you will think the DOF is infinite until you actually see the footage.

Could have used this last week, shooting outside in the Arizona sun :) Can't wait to see the finished product. Contrary to some here, I can see a lot of use for this and think the price-point sounds great. Of course, we have to see all the final specs, but sounds great to me.

Well damn

Zacuto just one-upped my idea big time

I like the looks of this one but I have always had a bit of a thing for Zacuto rigs.

I like the fact that it has HDMI out to send it to another monitor and the fact that it has a 1/4 20 on the bottom so you can easily mount it anywhere you like.

I don't think there's any "controversy" per se - it's just marketing misunderstanding. I believe that Steve Weiss is probably going to end up being right on this -- both the Redrock and the Zacuto will likely end up at the same basic resolution. It's just that Zacuto is publishing the RGB resolution spec (which I think is the proper way to do it), whereas Redrock is publishing what the chip manufacturer told them (1.2 million dots), without clarifying that the # of "dots" is counting red, green, and blue individually.

In any case, I think it's grossly unfair to say the Zacuto will be "1/3 the resolution of the Redrock" -- because while I can't guarantee it, I can almost guarantee that that isn't the case. They're very likely using comparable-technology panels, and I'll bet that they're both about the same res.

Dots is the standard for viewfinders though so in order to compare and compete you also need to publish the dot resolution.

A panel could use a different technology and have 1/3 the dots but still achieve the same effective RGB pixel resolution.

All that counts is the zoom ratio in 1920x1080p. 800 horizontal pixels is 41.7% pixel zoom which is good, 320 pixels is 16.7% which is terrible and 1280 pixels is 66.7% which is very good.

The Red 1280x720 viewfinder is only 32% in 4K and even less in 5K, that's why it needs that kind of resolution. 800x450 is very good for 1080p cameras and much more affordable.

I feel at once that this is a bit trite, but at the same time that it deserves questioning, so I'm asking.

The RedRock page says "High resolution full color HD display" and then the bit about 1.2m total dots...those seem to be rather incongruous statements since the display is either 720p or 1080p, thereby being significantly more than 1.2m total dots. Or the display is 1.2m dots and significantly less than HD...at least HD standards.

So maybe by HD they just mean better than SD 480p?

According to a Tweet and the website, Redrock's EVF has now the following feature:

"Built-in HDMI passthrough for supporting additional monitors"

The price stays the same.

This is really what I missed about the Redrock EVF, this update makes it actually usable on a set.

RedRock has an opportunity to hit Zacuto where it hurts if they can get their product out before the end of the year, or at least by Jan 2011. I NEEEEED THIS!!! I literally couldn't sleep the other night thinking about how amazing it'll be to have an EVF. I felt like a kid on Christmas eve.

With this the EVF just went from interesting to must buy status.

Ready to order!
