New Panasonic Gear Announcements Apr 15

I think it should be obvious that larger sensors are already in R&D somewhere at Panasonic. They just are not here yet. Better luck next time.
I agree that Sony gets the cake this year with the FS700.

HPX600 - Can talk with your "live truck" (LiveUstream)? WOW!!! 98% of the live hit's I did in my ENG career I was running the microwave truck, IFB, camera, audio, etc. Would be This is the future of broadcasting starting to happen. I'd love to see even more smart phone / camera apps & connectivity.

But did anyone else see the MicroP2 adapter? I mean...
SDHC P2 Adapter!!!

IMHO this is a few years over due, but we finally have for P2 what we've had for SxS for years. Quoted at only working up to 50mbsp with third party class 10 SDHC cards, I wonder if that is a firmware limiting factor, or just conservative advice Panasonic is offering b/c 100mbps SDHC read / write speeds are reliable. I really hope it is just conservative advice, so as SD cards get faster we can use at any rate.

I'm really wondering what the cost would be to upgrade old cameras and if there is a different prices for different cameras, or even free upgrades to something like a HPX250 purchased a couple months ago.

$250 for a firmware upgrade? That's a slap in the face. Glad I sold my AF100 a few months ago.

Red and other manufactures like Canon and Sony give firmware updates for free. Yes, I know Sony charges for some of theirs, but those are significant updates that add a lot of capability and they state from the beginning when the camera is announced/released that those specific updates will have a fee associated. This minor update for the AF100 doesn't add anything to justify a fee. Red, Canon, and Sony release regular firmware updates that add even more capability at no additional charge. And no, you don't pay $20,000 for those updates when you buy the camera. You buy better hardware with more capability such as 4K, HDRx, etc.

Very disappointed in Panasonic... again.

I will say this in the softest way possible - because I've gotten into trouble before here - but I think Panasonic really has shown that they're not as invested in the digital cinema market niche (large sensor, removable-lens, digital filmmaking equipment - as opposed to broadcast) as much as Sony, Canon and RED are.

I say that w.r.t. what I see in line card of camera offerings, things like firmware updates, and overall presence and emphasis. And of course, this is just my own observation and analysis and opinion.

And if I'm right, then I think that's just their choice for their business, and that's fine.

But me, I was hoping for more than what they've offered, sooner.

I think I may go down the FS100/FS700/F3/F5 path from here on in...

Either they use a Sony S35mm sensor for future products, or they will take the (long) time to develop their own.

You are joking right? A Sony sensor in a Panasonic camera?

I guess I'm in the minority that doesn't give a rats-a$$ about 4K and patient enough to wait for better color space and DR for less than Canon Hollywood prices. I also really don't believe that the minute difference between s35 format and 4/3 sensors makes any practical difference in achieving anything. If Panasonic goes to a S35 sensor camera its going to be to support PL mount lenses, not because the sensor needs to be bigger to do 4K.

Supposedly
Nikon uses Sony-developed sensors in some of their DSLRs.

True. The JVC HMQ10 uses a small 1/2.3" chip to get 4K (or darn close to it).

Maybe the GH3 will use micro P2 cards recording to avcUltra!!!!

I wonder if the microP2 cards will work on macs with SD slot, also curious if they're plastic or metal.

microP2 are essentially sd cards.

p2 cards are still viable but most probably best for 4k 4:4:4 stuff.

would be great to see avcultra (avccam to longG & avc-I 100) on an af100. but alas, no we dont.
