New HVX Steadicam Shot

Hi folks,

Just a quick 24 second clip of a singer friend of mine who volunteered to be my test subject.

The clip was shot in an underground parking lot with available flourescent light. The camera was on a steadicam rig and had a Lite Panel mounted to give some fill. I had reservations about using this lite at first but now I hardly shoot without it. These lights are pretty amazing although pretty expensive. I got a set of two so I could always keep one on charge. They usually stay lit for about an hour and a half and takes about that much time to charge.

I'll have some dolly and jib shots sometime in the near future.

This was shot at 720/24p All the settings were at 0 except for the Master Ped at -8.
The clip is a a full res .mov file. 123.7 megs. I think -6 for the Ped might be the magic number.

Wow, beautiful picture! The guy who was worried about the strobe effect when panning should see this.

That Lite Panel is awesome, really brings out the detail in her hair.

Thanks for the clip.

For all who don't have FCP, some framegrabs directly from the FCP timeline.

The first image downconverted to PAL resolution. You can say what you want, but 4:4:4 for PAL resolution is finally here

And here a question about the noise/grain about a thing that I do not understand.

These images have quite heavy motion blur on the background due to the movement of the cam and it's panning. So I would expect the background to be very blurred and have no visible grain.

But as you can see here there is actually a lot of noise/grain even in the motion blurred areas.

So my question is, is this from A) the edge enhancement (could you state the setting that was used during the shot, was it -5?) or B) from the DVCPRO HD codec or C) from an artificial noise that is rendered on top of the captured image to make it look "sharper"?

Whatever it is, it is a bit of a pain because it is not a 1x1 pixel noise but a more block-ier 2x2 or 3x2 pixel noise due to the rescaling from 960 up to 1280. Why the blocks do not look like 2x1 or 3x1 I don't know.

I applied a PS motionblur to the lower part (which would have been what I expected) and applied a 200% scaling with pixel repeat.

Detail level was set at 0 if I understand correctly. So noise should be less visible with that down.
Mind you, in a freeze you can't judge noise. You have to see the motion of it to know wether it's distracting or not. (I''l get back to this once the clip is in FCP) Obviously for keying this is not a good thing though... :(

EDIT: BTW: someone pointed out in a post somewhere that the pal version won't shoot 960 but will shoot directly in 1280. Something to do with the 50p stream vs the 60p in the same bandwidth. If this is true, maybe the Pal camera will show less 'noiseblocks'?

DLing the file now. the screengrab looks AMAZING! did you use a 35mm adapter? i really dig that light, too... might look into purchasing one.

what brand/model of light are you using? ditto mikkowilson's questions... i'm trying to pick out a good rig to use with the HVX. ideally, i'd love to have one that would handle a letus35 adapter and matte box. any suggestions? at this point, i'm looking at a glidecam smooth shooter support system from b&h for $2299 and a hollywood-lite/varizoom flowcam gt kit for 2499. any clues?

Someone please convert this file to wmv?

Someone please convert this file to wmv?

So how does it look?

Is it clean?

The image capture sure looks decent for the level of lighting.

Can someone please convert this to a hight quality wmv?

Thanks, Steve

Just had a good look at it. It's stunning. Bit of grainy noise in the background but nothing distracting or troublesome. Really nice footage, the best I've seen from this cam so far.
Nice cars to. :) Range Rover, Mercedeses, Bmw X5,... and a Porsche Cayenne right? :)
