New HMC150, Need help with FCP Log & Transfer

Hey everyone, I've been trolling these forums for years. First, as a DVX owner-operator, and as of today, an HMC-150 user! I love the camera, and I got a smokin' deal on it. (I'll post my experience/review of the retailer in another post)

But I'm running into a problem that others have mentioned...I can't seem to get Log & Transfer to recognize anything the HMC outputs. Here's the breakdown:

I'm using a Quad-Core Intel MacPro, plenty of RAM, drive space, etc. I'm running the latest, greatest version of Final Cut Pro. (6.0.5) First, I copy the entire folder structure from the SDHC card to my hard drive. When I open the Log & Transfer window, I click the Open Folder icon in the upper left corner. I select the root folder ("Private", or "AVCHD") and NOTHING HAPPENS. I've tried trashing my preference files, rebooting, and nothing seems to work.

Am I doing something wrong? I've heard of others having similar issues, but I've not heard of any precise fix for the problem. I've been working with different cameras and post-production for years, so I'm pretty confident with problem-solving/workarounds, etc. So I'm really scratching my head with this!

Of course, I can transcode the clips to ProRes422, DVCPROHD, etc, using Toast - then I can simply drag those clips into FCP. But I really prefer the Final Cut workflow, as I've been using it for years, and I'm familiar with it's media management, feel, etc.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! And boy-o-boy, do I love the image this camera produces. Phenomenal for the price!

Have you tried using the camera to transfer?

I haven't tried the camera to transfer. Only because that's not going to be a smooth workflow for me. (I have several employees who will be using the camera, so I'll need to ingest the media from SDHC cards.

Well, I haven't received my camera yet, but it's my understanding that the log and transfer works like it does with the HVX. However, with the HVX there was a Contents folder and another file that was needed. I always just selected the Contents folder and it imported the clips. Was there a contents folder when you dragged the files over?

I copy the files over to my MAC HDD before log/transfer all the time - and have never had an issue. I'm using the same version of FCS - and it looks like you're browsing to the folder location...

I've attached a picture of the file structure of the SDHC cards. I've tried importing the root folder ("Private") and the "AVCHD" folders - neither have been recognized by Log & Transfer. No warnings, no error messages. Just nothing. Nothing happens. :(

Does anyone know if I'm supposed to load a different folder into Log & Transfer? Again, I've copied the entire contents of the SDHC card to my hard drive. I'm not trying to load from the SDHC card. (Although that would be super-convenient!)

Try this.

Create a new user and log into the account.

Then open FCP and try the log/transfer again.

Well, I tried a new user account, and still....it doesn't do a damn thing. :crybaby:

This is maddening. I really wish FCP would at least give me an error message, or something! The fact that nothing happens when I load a folder, ANY folder, it's bizarre.

Might works without incident just by navigating to the top folder.

In other words, I copy the contents of the SDHC card to a folder called GAME1.

Then I use the folder icon to locate GAME1 and the clips quickly appear.

Try selecting the folder that CONTAINS the 'PRIVATE' folder.

"PRIVATE" is the top level folder. I've tried copying the entire contents to another custom-named folder, (Just like David S does) I've tried importing straight from the SDHC card. It doesn't matter which folder, root or otherwise, I select - FCP does NOTHING in Log & Transfer.

I've even gone as far as to re-format the card, and shoot some other test material. Same thing. Nothing happens, regardless of what I select in Log & Transfer.

Just in case - is your Quicktime up to date? What OS version are you running? What are you copying the cards to (internal drive, external drive, NAS, server...)... have you restarted / repaired permissions lately?

Quicktime: Version 7.6
Mac OSX Version: 10.5.6
Final Cut Pro: Version 6.0.5

Pretty sure these are the latest/greatest...

I've had the same issue Shizznid. No reply in the other thread about it. Hope you find some resolution as I'd like to test encoding times and export times as well as how it is to work with.

I'm totally stumped. I've literally tried every variation of root folder to import via Log & Transfer, and I can't get it to do ANYTHING! Oh well.....until someone comes up with an answer, I'll go shoot something on the camera! :)

I had the exact same problem

In my case it was a problem with Toast.

i updated toast and the problem went away.

hope it helps

I had the exact same problem

In my case it was a problem with Toast.

i updated toast and the problem went away.

I've used Toast 9 to successfully transcode the .MTS clips to Apple Pro Res 422, and them I've dragged them into my Final Cut Pro project. No problem there....

But I'd really like to use the Final Cut functionality to log and transcode the clips, rather than Toast. Hence the problem...
