GH5 New GH6 Wish list

Nikon has finally released its long awaited Raw upgrade - via HDMI to Atomos Ninja - for $200.

For those scoring at home, this is a full frame camera that will work with the AF Nikkor glass. The combo with Raw and a 5" Ninja will run ~ $2,600 as of now.

I'd like a more "juicy" look. As much as I love Panasonic, the image coming out of the GH5 never wows without either stunning good luck (like a perfect sunset, rainbow, yada), or a boatload of post.

The GH5 looks good, but rarely great. So yeah, better over-all image quality, which would include getting some better dynamic range. Blown out white hotspots are a plague on the GH5.

I'd like to see the IBIS improved to Olympus-level good.

That's pretty much it - better color science & over-all continued improvement to imagine quality, a stop better sensitivity & dynamic range, and improvement to their already good IBIS. Maybe getting a bit better battery life.

Note, I've pretty much given up on the idea that Panasonic will ever autofocus as well as Sony or Canon.

Thanks for asking Illya,

FWIW, I bought my GH5 from Hot Rod to say thanks for your support of this site and GH stuff in general.

Raw- No, FF- No, 6K-no. If I wanted those specs there’s the S1H.

I will take full Log however

External tally light, better record indicator on the EVF/LCD

GH5s-like sensor, new and improved for 2020 with the reasonably better color science, dynamic range and noise performance than current GH cams.

Cinema/video centric display on the EVF... like the S1H. While they are at it, make the mountain-flower etc focus distance indicator go away once and for all. IMO, it’s time the GH6 move more intentionally into the motion picture camp regarding instrumentation and displays.

Although it sounds trivial, flipping the LCD out is a PITA. The miniature indent for your finger nail is massively inadequate. I’ve been wrestling with GH LCD’s since the GH3. Flipping them out is a dark art...

An improved EVF is always, always welcome. Something like the G9 would be great.

My 2.5 cents.

Thanks Illya.

While we're all dreaming, here is my wishlist:

- A tilting viewfinder like the one on the Panasonic GX8. Why doesn't the GH5 have this ergonomic wonder already?

- At least 64GB of built-in high speed memory. And it really should be 256GB. Two SD slots would still be nice, but I can live with one if there is built-in memory.

- A better, more obvious indication of when the camera is recording and when it is not recording.

- A simple viewer/decoder app for Windows/Mac that lets you view 10-bit 4:2:2 files. The PhotoFunStudio software it comes with now is WAY too quirky. Bonus points if the decoder app can work as a plug-in to the free version of DaVinci Resolve, so you can at least edit 10-bit 4:2:2 files on the free version of Resolve.

- A beefier and stronger hot shoe mount on top of the camera. It obviously can't be "full-cage" stronger, but the hot shoe on my GH3 broke and killed the camera. (Yeah, I can get it fixed, but I haven't yet.) I hate to put anything on top of my GH5 because of what happened to my GH3.

- Mic/line audio input.

- An inexpensive balanced audio adapter. The XLR1 is stupid expensive.

- Firmware that allows Panasonic lenses to work exactly like parfocal lenses. (Yeah, I'm dreaming, ain't I?)

- Intelligent scaling for photos up to 32 megapixels... so that the GH6 can create in-camera 8K time-lapse videos. (If you haven't done a time-lapse video with the GH5, you're missing out on a really cool feature.)

- A 4-inch flip-out display instead of a 3.5-inch display. The time has come for bigger displays, right?

FWIW, the new Zeiss ZX-1 fixed lens 37 MPX has a 512 GB build-in SSD.

Of course, it also has a built-in editing suit.

And please use next generation GH5S matrix. 4K is enough for such a camera. I doubt anyone would shoot 6k with this level cameras (IMHO).

Yeah I couldn’t care less about 6k especially on a GH camera. Sure it’s nice for FX work or cleaner 4K or reframing for shooting in 4K. But that’s some high end consideration that IMO should be relegated for larger sensor cameras. If I’m choosing a GH camera I am choosing it for other reasons. Anything that could be gained in resolution these days I would prefer be used instead for lowlight.

The GH5 is pretty darn great but with the current competition I'd want some pretty great advancements in order to upgrade.

Full v-log, v-gammet, dual iso, olpf, 10bit files for all recording options, upgraded LCD, upgraded evf, reduced HDMI lag and linear focusing on native MFT lenses.

Unfortunately what I've essentially described is a MFT s1h and as much as Panasonic is pretty good with not protecting the sales of their higher end I think what I've described above wouldn't happen.

Trying to think of requests that arent magic (8k raw 1000fps)

Two threads in the bottom so a follow focus does not spin the camera.

Sharpening off.

ND

Scrap the form factor - for example battery at the bottom is rubbish - go for a little cube

--

What MFT really needs is an 'almost ENG' range zoom lens - the sensor is the perfect size to be 'cinematic' (voigtlander fast primes) while decent zoom range lenses dont have to be the size/cost of the Cn17, 18-80 and others

Focus Assist Magnification function usability While Recording. Fix the slow motion quality wise, especially in V-log.

Personally, I don’t want IBIS, not really interested in autofocus ...
I just want best fastest rolling shutter, or global shutter. Dual native iso
Sounds crazy and maybe unrealistic for GH, but SDI out without latency would be ideal or actually designing a YAGH that was an ergonomic blessing as opposed to the bottom lagging brick or the flimsy looking top mount xlr.

GH5S has a nice fast rs, great color, so pushing with that feel with extra stops of dr is very welcome.
Regardless, I love my GH5S, and will likely skip GH6 unless it has global shutter without DR hit

On the basis that the GH6 will be an evolution of the GH5 and therefore a hybrid stills and video camera some of the suggestions here are unlikely to be realised. 24mp, More DR, better AF, full V-LOG and that will be enough.
