NEW GH2: choppy video?

Hello,

I just got a new GH2. I was very psyched about it, but when I looked at the video there was choppiness. When I looked at video of me walking past camera, I was in one spot, then a second later I jumped to the next spot, without showing the action in between! I tried changing the shutter speed for 24p, I set it to 50 (there is no 48, right?).
Even for 60p, there was a bit of choppiness, although not as severe. I tried 125 shutter for that and 60 shutter after that. I had the ISO @ 1000 in all shots for 24 and 60p. 14-42 kit lens and one bulb overhead room lighting and light right outside door in hall.

Is this a lighting issue or is my camera defective??

How are you evaluating your footage ?

i.e. If you connect your camera to a HD TV set via the HDMI port, does your footage still look choppy when you play it from the camera ?

I'm using SplashLite player and Sony Vegas to view the mts files. I don't have a monitor or TV with HDMI input.

Is it smooth through your camera??
It could be so many factors, but first you have to eliminate the obvious.
First: Check the video through your camera
You camera came with AV cables to hook up to a TV, you can try that as well.

I have monies on your computer being the problem. Its most likely you have some odd configuration... like a slow HD or other programs running in the background, or maybe you should try to play the .mts file with another media player.

Thanks for the replies. I think it may have to do with autofocus/a tracking setting.
I'm not familiar enough with those, but I can say that this doesn't happen on manual focus.

The settings when there was skipping was "AFS" and then the sub-selection "Face Detection".
Does that make sense that those settings would cause an image of someone walking to skip?

Any of the other autofocus settings know to not do that?
Maybe it also has something to do with the metering mode? Spot/Centered-weight etc,?

I could not imagine it being the focusing... its a serious problem if your camera is skipping.
Once recording, it shouldn't have any frame issues... EVER!
I have noticed a "Start" delay in recording when I have the camera set to 1080i, it usually gives me about a 1 second delay before recording... but once started, it records flawlessly.

Well, this is a bummer. I guess it's good I found out now.
Before I return it, maybe you or someone else could put GH2 on tripod, try those settings and walk around in front of the camera and see if you get skipping on playback:
Dial: Creative Motion Picture Mode
Menu: 24P CINEMA quality: 24H
Autofocus setting switches: "AFS" and then the sub-selection "Face Detection".

thanks, if anyone is willing to do this

I've shot plenty of footage with those settings and things playback fine. I am sure the issue is your playback device. Try rendering at a lower res to test maybe?

I honed in on one file that skipped and I kept playing it over again and noticed was that it wasn't skipping in the same spot every time. It was actually a playback issue, just like you guys said. I then managed to render that very file without issue.

I appreciate the feedback. I would have felt awful to exchange it only to find the same thing again, especially because it was very difficult getting a hold of a GH2.
Thanks again.
