NEW GH1 24p 110 MBs Gop 1 patch

With all the hacking being done to the GH2 I have not given up on my old GH1. I feel that it offers a cleaner image when properly exposed and it has a more smoother filmatic look them the GH2. I have tweaked my current 24p GOP1 settings and it now provides excellent detail and much less macroblocking then before and yes even my GH2. I use this patch for everyday interior scenes and it hold up real well. It will most likely cause write errors in static locked off shots of high detailed exterior scenes, such as dense foliage or brush. Keep in mind that this is not the be all to end all patches, it is maximized for shadow detail, less noise and smoother panning cadence. I have only used this patch in 24p and have not tested or will not be testing it in other modes. I have had good clean results up to iso 500.

Give it a go, your GH1 will thank you for it.

I don't think there is a way around it, because color resolution of GH1 is simply poor. It is not ideal on the GH2 either. This becomes obvious when one tries to massage the colors a bit. If one separates the channels and has a look at the red or blue channel from a GH1, they are coarse. Only the green channel is adequately detailed. I agree that standard shots without much color grading look nice on the GH1.

I will test these settings on the GH1. I already shoot GOP-1 when possible for the better motion rendering.

I think the macroblocking is improved with this patch, not perfect by any means but certainly smoother in the blue and reds then what I get out of my hacked GH2. I for one am not impressed with the noise the GH2 produces. Other may call it grain and love the look. I hope, but I doubt that any hack will improve the GH2 sensor. I would rather add grain in post if the final look requires it and capture as clean as image as possible. As far a grading I use smooth film mode with everything dialed down to -2. I can usually pull alot back in grading with good results. Its too bad most of the Ptool efforts are being spent towards the GH2 these days. I still believe the GH1 still has more to give. We just need more efforts to keep it going. Rigs.

Good stuff, man. You know, I too loved the look of our GH1 but the internal noise banding (or whatever term we ended up using) was too much for me. Non of the tricks others used helps... in the end, I had a bum sensor. The GH2 seems to be more consistent in that regard, and the Driftwood hacks at just amazing to me when set up correctly.

True Cosimo - the verticle noise band is a pain in under exposed scenes which is really evident in the blue channel. Propper exposure and white balance, plus keeping it under iso 500 will help eliminates it. The GH2 also has a simular problem which shows up as a horizontal band.

Allot of people are happy with the GH2 which is cool. I am however curious on how many GH2 cameras have the same noise grain that I have seen on 4 of the cameras I have owned. I wonder if the people that are not seeing the noise are either getting a better performance out of theirs or they are simply viewing their footage on monitors that are not full HD rez such as laptop (1440 -900 on a MBP screen) or even on a 720p TV screen. Or they are just happy with the noise as is, in which case - to each his own.

The ones I have seen are noisy. If I didn't need the monitor, I would not use it, I would use the GH1. I think some people are just bugged by the noise more than others.
However, I was at a concert the other day, and someone asked for some footage. I just had the cam and the 45mm. Put the cam on a chair, hit ETC and the 45mm was good to go from the back of the hall.
Noisy? Yup. But good. So, those features are good. And hey, it is not an expensive camera. If you think you can buy a few more and get one with low noise, good luck :) I say spend the $$$ on the 45mm Olly and get the sharpness plus the low noise. But shooting under a controlled lighting is a different world. Sometimes, like I did a few days ago, you need the GH2 features.
I say, enjoy your amazing, super clean GH1 and don't worry about the GH2. In four months there will be the GH3 plus the Canon V3, and you will still have all the super clean footage in those four months before you jump a cam to the GH3.

No, for my GH1 there was nothing to be done... the banding this was unusable/fixable. I've thought about trying with a GH17/later model... maybe later if I can find a body on the very cheep. The GH2 banding thing is WAY more subtle and has, after many, many hours of shooting (we have two and use them for jobs) never wrecked a shot.

any video test? ;)

is it working well too in 1080 24p and 25 (and 50/60i)? spanning (i guess not)?

i will make a try soon because i need to have "heavy details shot" for "potential theater screening".

Newbie here...
just got a GH1 as a present and read all about hacking it and all the patches but i still dont get how this works. Is this patch for AVCHD or MJPEG?
i mean what is better/ best resolution in general? i know they are both for different things but doesnt MJPEG only shoots at 720 while AVCHD shoots at 1080?
am i wrong ? im just really confused now
I apologize for my ignorance

"Hacking" the GH1 can appear like a big question at first, but generally you only need to load lpowell settings in Ptool and save the new modified firmware file. You will see improvement in both AVCHD and MJPEG.

MJPEG by nature is already GOP-1, so any reference to that in the hack settings means turning the AVCHD into GOP-1. The improvement can be seen in motion rendering when shooting AVCHD, but these settings are not as reliable as the lpowell settings. They are extremely high bitrate for GH1.

If you feel like newbie, try the lpowell settings first and see if those satisfy. When you get more experience, experiment with the GOP-1 settings if you feel there is need for them.

Very nice patch. I'm surprised to not see more discussion about it on here. I thought users would have jumped on this patch.

I have not done a lot of testing yet but so far it has not crashed indoors. Motion rendering is very nice but I haven't really pushed it very hard with the simple scenes I was shooting.

I tried two shots outdoors and the first one crashed but that was with a lot of trees and detail so it was expected. The shots looked great up until they crashed.

If I only shot indoors I might consider this my main patch but since I shoot outdoors as well I may have to give it up and go back to another patch that is a bit more stable outdoors. This was with a M43 lens however and I may have better results with one of my FD lenses. I also just noticed I accidentally had my GH1 with a sharpness of 0 instead of -2 which may or may not help a bit as well. Tomorrow I may really go out and try some more outdoor stuff with this patch and my FD lenses.

This rigs patch is definitely unbeatable indoors. So just have 2 sd cards .one for shooting indoors and outdoors.i use ipowell 100mbps patch outdoors and rigs patch indoors.
