FS7: New FS7 little brother?

Have you used one much?

Never even picked one up. I cant be doing with spending more than a grand and not getting SDI.

While HDMI might (just) work for going from the camera to an EVF it is hopeless IMO for remote mounting that may desire long runs and/or continual plugging/unplugging every take.

When I buy a small camera I tend to spend a lot.. cage, custom cabling, spare batts so I want to really want to buy in.A7s was just too expensive to me.

Just seemed a bit weird to say you couldn't understand why it would be good for stills without actually used one. Anyway I digress...

Re that Blackmagic new, I imagine they have 18 more cameras coming out or something!

Im sure it takes great pictures (the nex5n takes nice pictures) But Ive got AF nikkors from 14mm to 600/4 - as have most of my chums - (or the canon equiv) so sony have a huge investment wall to persuade jobbing snappers to even consider Sony. Also we are deeply wedded to ground glass, a chunky feel, good shutter button placement, and AF that can track Usain Bolt.

For some stills on a video led shoot I guess it is worth consideration.

AF on the A7rII with Canon glass is faster than on Canon DSLRs.
All my glass is Canon mount.

DSLRs will be dead inside 3 years.

5d or 1dx? - we consider the 5d 'unsuable' due to poor af - it is not a 'pro' camera either.

Anyway that new sony video camera? :)

I wouldn't put much into the price drop on the Ursa, that is the old camera and BMD has a history of doing that with cams that have been out a while.

yes, but the turret is user upgradeable and the 4.6K turret for this old URSA is supposed to ship before anything else....so the not even out new big URSA just got a price drop....

That's a $2000 drop in less than 12 months.

And the URSA is only a year old...only around this time and more into October and November of 2014 did it start shipping regularly.

That's true but it seems like the general consensus is that Ursa "Major" is far too large - especially now that "Minor" is coming out. I love the concept of upgradeable turrets and the size/weight doesn't sway me personally BUT a lot of people don't like the additional support costs (heavier duty tripods, jibs, stabilizers, etc.) so they need incentives to help bolster sales on the larger camera body.

Heck...it's making me reconsider it.

It's an absolutely amazing camera. The image is like nothing else...and now for $4K?...crazy.

I haven't kept up with the latest firmware upgrades, have they been able to fix the issue with shooting into the sun, and the fixed pattern noise problem so many complained about? If not, I imagine it would cripple sales. I wouldn't buy any camera that didn't allow me to shoot into the sun. I can't imagine any camera manufacturer releasing a camera with such a pathetically ridiculous limitation. Now if it has been addressed and fixed, I would say it's a bargain. despite those issues it's a nice image.

The sun issue hasn't been fixed on any of the cameras besides the Pocket. Supposedly the new 4.6K sensor cameras do not have this problem. However, BM has an introduced an option in Resolve 12 to fix the issue to certain degrees (software still in various stages of Beta). The fixed pattern noise is the biggest problem (IMO), but if you're lighting, you will never have an issue with it. The camera is definitely not a low-light camera in terms of ISO. 400 for the URSA/BMPC sensor is the max.

Supposedly, certain ARRI cameras (like the Alexa) have the sun issue as well, but I can't confirm because I don't have experience with any of them.

URSA Mini 4K (old 4K sensor) is now $2,995, whenever it ships. Prices are indeed dropping left and right.

The original URSA was supposed to have most of its black sun/FPN problems fixed but its quality control remains an issue, if one reads the reviews. I find its image quite pleasing. The Mini's selling features is its light weight (5 lbs) and internal ProRes.

The sun issue was never supposed to be fixed. It's the same sensor as the BMPC. Not sure about how much has changed with FPN. I think that depends on the camera you get and the cooling system helps.

I am obsessed with Blackmagic cameras and have owned every single one...and spend too much time on the other forums.

However, quality control issues. Absolutely.

I can confirm there's no black sun spot issue with the URSA mini 4.6K, nor FPN issues. The lowlight performance is better than the production 4K camera and similar to Pocket/2.5K cameras, as in 1600ISO good but not higher. It's not an FS7/C100 lowlight performer and is more suitable for film shoots, fixed at 800 ISO, with a mattebox for ND filtration.

I believe the FS1/FS200/C100/C300 advantage over that specific camera will always be the higher suitability for documentary/event shoots, having the significantly better lowlight performance, the internal NDs, small codecs, cheap media, light long lasting batteries, etc. The URSA mini is just overall feels like a set/film camera, even the menus, but most of all the V-Lock batteries, CFast 2.0 media, Raw, Lack of NDs and 800 ISO almost locked and the lack of any in-camera paint/picture-profile options other than a single ''video'' horrible image and a LOG ''Film'' option. It's a great film camera, a lower budget substitute to Alexas, F65s, Reds, but not a C100/FS7/DSLR style ''video camcorder'' if that makes sense.
