FS7: New FS7 little brother?

this will do everything the FS7 does but smaller, no raw/external options, finder integrated, some other limitations in connections (audio?) to save space and money, no grip, 5000$ but we will see in a few days....

It will have goid autofocus though .
Wonder if they will soon come out with a properly powered Fs7 that doesn hobble itself .

This is what I'm thinking but XAVC-S instead. XAVC-L/I is their pro codec, XDCAM family (PXW/PMW). This cam should be the FS100 replacement.
Except you can clearly see on Sony's picture that it fits between the FS700 and the FS7...
So Sony see it as A7S -> FS700 -> FS??? -> FS7.
the curious thing here is that they included the A7S in the FS series line up. That together with the "missing link" image only enhances my feeling that it will indeed be a full frame camera. That would make the complete series FF -> S35 -> FF -> S35.

Fantastic news ! This could be the camera I've been waiting for. It's won't be perfect but my guess is:

FF Sensor (same as the new A7SII but tweeked)
Internal 4K 8bit 4:2:2 Maybe external 10bit 4:2:2 Recording
Similar Handgrip option to FS7 with a few tweeks
Similar EVF option to FS7 with a few tweeks
Probablly only one SDI and HDMI port.
Two XLR's
Built in ND's
Probablly no Genlock or Timecode.
The image shows what appears to be a second viewfinder at the back (similar to the F3, I may be completely wrong, but it could be an interesting option)
Same Battery as the FS7
Not sure about recording media, may be a combination of XQD and SD
Remote Tablet and Wi Fi Control, Monitoring via Sony App.
I wouldn't be surprised if Sony add a dedicated photo mode button or option to the camera too.

using a new sensor (since F5, F55 and FS7 share the same old one) would be a bold step (not that sony isn't down for that)....a better spec'd sensor in what would be the lowest end FS body? i guess there are two options: use the same sensor again and trim the FS7 down as much as possible or use the A7rII sensor and give it internal 10bit XAVC-I along with slog-3 4K up to 60fps with similar options like the A7rII (FF or S35 crop)...the second option would make a pretty serious statement....i don't see why they should not be able to pull it off....larger body, cut out all still functions (or don't) better processing, a few more connection then the A7 series and a few less then the FS7, forget about the grip and make the monitor 5"(ok, i don't think that will happen) flip out....XQD media, same batteries as FS7, smaller package, lighter, 4999$.....ursa mini does not look so good anymore....especially if sony can figure out something with AF as well....
the more i am writing the more excited i am:)

What if they go nuts and include the 5-axis in body stabilisation? That would be first for a camcorder, wouldn't it? And great for event shooters / one man crews / handheld etc which I guess are the primary target group for the camera...

Interesting times.

Due to the Ursa Mini 4.6k Sony is between a rock and a hard place. A RAW / Prores recording Mini 4.6k is half the cost of a RAW / Prores FS7 rig. If the Mini 4.6k actually performs as advertised Sony is going to have a real problem on their hands, because except for high speed there aren't a lot of reasons to spend twice the money on an FS7 with an external recorder and I/O box.

But if Sony puts out a $5000 camera with specs similar to the Ursa Mini 4.6k they will effectively kill the FS7, which is only a year old. If they don't, why would you buy the Sony over the URSA (if it works)?

Tough spot to be in.

Well once the Ursa mini is available for purchase and use this argument can hold merits. I've had the FS7 almost an entire year now, I took delivery end of October and the camera has paid for itself and been used on many projects. Many of those projects were events which 50mbs XAVC-L was perfect for. Sony has nothing to worry about with the FS7 right now. We'll know what the specs are for the new FS the closer we get to Sept 11 and I'm sure there will be much to complain about as what people want may not be what it includes. Till then time to prepare for another event on my FS7 which costs twice as much as the URSA Mini but I can use now. :)

Had a few too many cocktails one night & put down a deposit on the Mini 4.6k. The next morning I bought an FS7.

Hoping the Mini is everything it aspires to be, but BlackMagic's got a dicey history, & it may be awhile before the Mini can be all it can be. My guess is it will take some firmware updates to be reliable (like the FS7) & even then BlackMagic needs to drastically improve their repair services. I briefly shouldered the Mini at CineGear & the EVF looked good, but popping open the LCD leaves the CFast cards exposed to the elements, which gives me pause.

i don't think they have to go nuts to do it....just take the capture part of the A7rII and give it more processing power in a much larger body with enough room for the much larger batteries all this requires.....they do mention groundbreaking (which of course does not mean much)....
the best way to keep the FS7 (and the F5 and F55) valid is to not give this new camera any raw options but XAVC-I Cine-I slog-3 10bit 4K 60fps internal to XQD....that size, combined with the new sensor better AF, in body stabilization....makes anything that canon might have in the pipe outdated and completely overpriced....

Of all the camera manufacturers.....Sony seems to be the one most likely to say 'screw it' and compete with their existing lineup.
Many people didn't think they'd release a camera like the FS7, because then it would compete with the F5 and also kill off any existing
sales of the FS700. But they did it. I dunno, nothing they do anymore surprises me.

I'm in a similar boat. I have an F3L and put in a preorder for the Mini 4.6k.

I was going to go for the FS7 with the I/O box since I already have a Odyssey 7Q+.

But I'm in a catch 22 situation.

I don't trust the stability of the FS7 DSLR mount with a lens mount adapter and heavy lenses. Adding a support cage to hopefully stiffen the adapter adds almost $1000 to the cost. So, in order to shoot RAW on the FS7 I would be looking at about $9000-10,000 (FS7, I/O, adapter, cage).

The Mini 4.6k comes in at $5500, but nobody knows when it will really ship and how finished or reliable it will. BM doesn't exactly have a sterling record in any of those areas. People can say what they want about Sony, but their cameras are bulletproof.

So, now I'm torn. I basically have to choose between having my BNCR mount primes that I use on the F3 via an adapter, overhauled for about $6000 or buy a Mini 4.6k and use my Super16 glass in crop mode.

I would be very surprised of this new Sony on Sep 11 shoots RAW etc or doesn't have a DSRL lens mount. So, it's probably not the answer to my problems,

I'm pretty sure it's been confirmed that it's an Emount camera, so yeah, another DSLR mount.

The E-mount on the FS7 is very strong. I regularly use lenses over 2KG on an adapter.

And for the record... ...E-mount has never been used on a DSLR. Mirrorless, yes, but not DSLR.

It looks like the replacement for both 100 and 700 ... and codecs always migrate down the line ... I think what they might do is limit the internal recording bitrate to any of 100, 150 or 200 Mbps ... of the three, 150 is a step above A7RII and below FS7, which makes it a solid candidate ... plus, JVC LS300 records in 150 as well.

Or they could spring a surprise and made it 100 in HEVC ... (OK, I don't think so, but they could)

PS And the Final Cut has just added XAVC-L too? Coincident? Maybe, maybe not.

There have been several reports of heavy cine lenses flexing the mount (Art Adams etc). It's a spring-lock design, not positive lock like PL or BNCR.
Adding a cage that has an extra support for something like a PL adapter and or using a front lens support seems to solve the problem, but adds to the cost. Even if it happens rarely it's not something I want to have to worry about.

I've used a Canon 70-200/2.8 IS II on the speedbooster and on my FS7 shooting handheld. Although I wouldn't shoot for a whole day with this it works fine and feels solid.

My guess is that the new FS will have a few positiv surprises and a bunch of quirks.

I think you will be fine with most DSLR lenses. Like you say,
I think it would be heavier cine lenses that would cause any issues.
