New footage from JVC - LS 300

The samples prpvided here are not cinematic shots, not drama shots, most of them are at very high F/numbers, with kit zoom lenses at m43s crop mode, and at 60p and 30p, which is not bad it's just a different kind of genre than the film-emulating type. Even note some of the sample shooters taking about servo zoom, these footage are clearly shot with that genre in mind.

for those that want the look of video, but with the added cost and inconvenience of interchangeable lenses.

I'm certain if I take the Ursa Mini out to a zoo and violently overexpose everything, that it would also look equivalently turdish.

15 Stops of (alleged) latitude and DNGRaw/ProRes444 will give you more headroom to play with though.
But there's no doubt, that properly exposed, the LS300 can look as good as any other ENG camera out there.
No need to make press conferences or event videos look "cinematic" anyways...

Philip Johnston's review is up on www.hdwarrior.co.uk. He's a good operator and knows his gear so I think it's the first 'real world' footage we can make an accurate judgement on. He seems to like it, though it looks pretty mushy to me - that's likely to be the Vimeo compression though...

That was a very poor quality review, with no challenges to the cam on highlights, out of focus low light footage and a lot of repetition of specs from JVC sales people. That said, I was disturbed by the few moving shots, where there was a huge amount of jitter in the footage as the camera panned along with the motorbike for instance... if this is not due to vimeo, but in the footage, that right there is a total dealbreaker.

S'more footage.
Varied lighting and locations. Pretty decent.
Actually looks like it was filmed by someone who knows how to properly set exposure on a video camera!
But also by someone who doesn't know how to pick good accompanying music. Casio called, they're demanding a royalty check...

As a group of shots...this is the best exposed footage I'vs seen as well...although the daylight shots were overcast..so a little easier to handle. To me...some of the footage had a little of that 'organic' look to it....that was a bit of a pleasant surprise...

I liked the the under ground elevator music....I believe that was a pop cover of an old Buzzy Linhart tune...what could be any better than that!??

Have to agree, it looks superb there. Far too many crappy videos about made by people with no clue how to use a camcorder but this one does the trick and convinced me.

To my eyes it has that distinct video look, as well as poor highlight handling that we should not have to deal with in a camera released in 2015.

I'm out.
+10 I Spent some time with this cam at Nab. It has some great features, unfortunately the image isn't one. I concur, I'm also out:-)

based on the lighting I'm wondering if the dp thought he was shooting on an HVX200 WITH a redrock dof adapter. :-0 Music is just as bad.

Nothing much more to think about. Everything is there except a non-video looking image. If they official JVC promo material looks this way how can we expect anything else from this camera? With a better image feel this camera could have knocked it out of the park. I am not a huge film look or nothing type of person. I consider myself more of a videographer and I still think this image looks very video-y. How could they miss this? Does not seem like a price thing. Cheap still cameras have a better feel to their video image than this footage.

Cool to see this making off. The sensor could not hold up by the rest of the production.
I do think this camera does no fit in this production by far.
This is a film production and the JVC just breaths video.
It's more in place at news en docu.

(I love JVC but this camera is going to be a fiasco and it's to blame on the sensor)

Price Drop coming real soon! Unfortunately, I'm out at any price. Version 2 should be interesting ("IF" they make necessary changes/ updates)..............

I am not sure if the sensor is (entirely) to blame. The lack of DR is where many sensors fall short but the clipping is more due to the post-sensor processing.

GH4's DR in the same ballpark but it handles clipping differently. Besides, this is a larger sensor with much larger pixels to boot.
