New footage from JVC - LS 300

Looks sweet to me. Pity the snobs write off JVC because they aren't a 'designer' name..

For what it's worth, I don't consider myself a snob. And I'm not writing of JVC. I just expect certain things from the tools I use, including meeting client expectations. To my eye, this camera has a "video look". And issues with handling highlights.

If you see something different, and feel it looks sweet, then great.

That's why there are hundreds of different cameras available. Because everybody sees something different. And different people need different tools at different price points.

I wonder how the Ursa mini 4K will compare to this at $1000 Less?
You're forgetting that the lil Ursa doesn't come with ND filters or a battery and charger. What are those worth?
Not to mention that the CFast cards it records to ain't cheap either.
BMD cameras produce some nice images, but you wont get a single frame of footage from the baby Ursa for $3000.
$4500 and up is probably a more realistic figure.

That is one camera I have not had the opportunity to test yet.

I know a lot of kids, err umm, younger shooters, are all about having as small a camera setup as possible. But I really enjoy a camera with proper ergonomics where you can balance the camera on your shoulder and not have it flop. I absolutely hate having to rig crap up for handheld work.

Yes...you do have to buy extras for the mini...so maybe fairly similar price...
but I'm mostly interested in the IQ of the mini 4k (not 4.6) and the ls300 and the DR.
The sensor in the mini 4k has supposedly has been reworked a little but may still have
the 'Solar black hole' problem. I'm trying hard to find a new camera in the 5k area that has
a little bit of that cinematic/organic look. So far, I'm not a fan of how the Ls300 handles over exposed areas
including the unnatural colors in even slightly over exposed areas. Sometimes they can look quite cartoonish.

I will mostly be shooting Shorts.....not much hand held shooting.

Buy an NX1 or A7s plenty of cinematic/organic look there and will work fine for shorts.

I knew the new 4.6k sensor had been cleared of the black hole problem...but I hadn't heard the 4k sensor on the mini had...
Thanks for that info! That will help with my decision....

Price drop on the LS300. Only $3500.

Not a bad deal I think for a camera that meets & exceeds everyone's wishes for the Panasonic AF100 v2 (which will never be made).

And now that the new Panasonic DVX200 has been revealed to be less-than-great out-of-the-box (needing lots of specialized color work to look decent).

And now that the Blackmagic Ursa Mini cameras are 4 months late in delivery and seem to have no set delivery schedule.

I wonder if this nice JVC camera will continue to be overlooked...

I've been eyeballing this camera since I heard about it last NAB, but I was unable to check it out. Now I am just waiting for a project where I can fit its rental into the budget. I still use my AF100 practically every day and I think it would be a pretty smooth transition process.

I think the market JVC is trying to compete in is tough for them. I know lots of news shooters that use JVC cameras and they seem to like them, but those are a totally different type of user. Even though JVC tried to market this camera to them, I think it is more in tune with those of us who use AF100s and the like.

I wonder how it stacks up against FS5. Anyone had a chance to work with both?

At least on paper, the FS5 looks to be a better camera, then again, it is a few grand more.

I had an LS300 when it first came out. Personally, I found it underwhelming.

Lack of HFR or means to monitor exposure, not to mention so-so dynamic range led me to return it. ( Since then, I think JVC has addressed some of those 'issues')

If you're stepping up from a DSLR and on budget, the LS300 might be a good option.

But, if you have a little extra dough, you just might consider bumping up to the FS5.
