New Final Cut on the way....

I just read where Apple plans to release a new version of Final Cut Studio about the same time if not before the big NAB show in Vegas next month. The article I read didn't specify what it was going to include or what added features it will have though. I guess more news will come out in the coming weeks.

Everyone is assuming Apple will announce a new version of FC Studio because Apple typically works on a two year cycle. There are no facts, just idle speculation.

Apple never releases any information beforehand. Anything anyone might publish, as mentioned, is speculative or leaked from inside sources.

An update across the board would be nice, throw in Aperture and a 3-d program and what else do you need?

The new big thing could be the inclusion of the new Shake/Phenomenon into FCS, some call it "MotionPro".
Anyway, I´d rather have the possiblity of purchasing a standalone FCP for my laptop, those bundles may came handy on your first purchase for your main workstation, but if you just want to do some ruff cutting on your MBP, you don´t need the whole Studio.
And Express doesn´t do the "pro" formats unfortunately...

You can choose to only install FCP if you want, but personally I don't see them becoming unbundled for sale individually ever again.

Of course Noah, but I´d have to buy a complete FCS first...
For me, I´d rather pay lets say half the price of FCS and only get FinalCut, than to pay full price and only maybe use Motion/STP on my MBP some time in the future...

I also don´t think the studio apps become unbundled again, BUT what about some more flexible multi users licencing?
Like you have to buy at least one FCS and then just licence out another volume of FCP for field editing or a Motion volume for an extra FX workstation...?

Would be really nice for smaller companys which don´t need 5 complete licences like with the current volume programm for FCS...

Yeah I see your point but I just don't see that happening. Besides, from my POV $1,200 would still be a bargain for what you can do with FCP alone and the rest of the apps are just icing on the cake.

Supposedly...

If Apple unbundled the suite I don't think you'd see a big price cut for FCP since that is the main dish. Before the bundle FCP was $999 and all the other apps were $400-$500 (way back in the day Cinema Tools was another grand all by itself) and I think a similar price structure is what Apple would do if they ever unbundled everything.

Apple will not ever unbundle FCP again, we are way past that. Since you sound as if you have not used it a lot, the Suite is the number one best feature about going FCP. Motion, STP in particular are awesome and I love what they allow me to do. Compressor works great but it is slow and needlessly complex. DVDSP is great but without BluRay, a lot of people don't like it.

I wrote a book on STP when they first introduced it as a standalone. The week my book was at the printer to be printed, Apple EOL'd STP. Little did we know that six months later they were going to bundle it with FCS. Apple will sell the Suite. I have no doubt that the Shake technology will end up in FCS.

If you only want FCP, why not FCE?

Dan

Yes, I read this the other day. Apple rumor sites only have about a 20% accuracy record, if that. Sure, they might introduce something new, but there is also a very good chance that they won't. We are due but that means nothing.

Because, AFAIK it doesn´t work with DVCpro50/HD.
Maybe you didn´t read my lengthy post, I use FCS (ALL aps) on the MacPro and I would just like to have a singled out FinalCut to go through interviews on my laptop or iMac.
But enough of my personal problems now...

Spartacus:

You do realize that you can install FCP only from your FCS on your laptop as well as long as the two systems are not run at the same time?

You are correct, FCE doesn't support pro formats, only DV and HDV, I think.

Yes Dan, thanks, but that´s exactly the thing I need: to log/transcribe interviews, setting ins and outs, while the editor is working at the same time...
And I also consider FCS studio to be a bargain, with all the apps included.
And I´d be happy to pay 50% more for it if I could install FinalCut on another machine for preparation work...
But as you and others said: not gonna happen.

Well I'm looking forward to FCS 3 if / when it comes out.

While we're on the topic of things Apple will never do, I think it would be great if Project files were more backwards compatiable. (Save a project in FCP 6, open in FCP 4). Photoshop has this down with PSD files working w/ many different releases, the Project file I wouldn't think would be so complex that it NEEDs to be opened up with a current version.

PS I know about XML & such, still not as easy as moving a PSD file from station to station.

I know it is not legit, but you just have to turn your airport off.
