C100: New Atomos Ninja Blade With HDMI

Great I will definitely look into the Z Axis.

Anyone know what the approximate recording time to GB ratio for Prores 422 and Prores HQ? Trying to see if the Ninja blade is practical for weddings.

I just received the ninja blade. What an improvement on the screen! Very nice! I am going to put it through some test, especially regarding those long takes and the splitting file problem.

If you guys have any question about it or if you want me to test something let me know.

EDIT: actually this may be one of the best screen I owned...

That's the fact Jack!

Since the NB only comes with one drive caddy and I need two I found them on Amazon but they come in 5 packs! I don't think I need six drives. Might sell a few if anyone is interested.

Erik, if I were you, I'd email Atomos. I've had great experience with there customer service in the past. Surely they can send you out another drive caddy.

Yeah I got two as well.

Unfortunately still no record trigger or timecode though :/

What are you recording with, C100? I have a C100 with latest firmware and the record trigger works very well. Bad unit?

I do have the black line on the right side though. I hope to see a firmware update soon.

But no problem with long takes the way I had them with the ninja 2. I get one nice long and fat file per take with no dropped frames.

Did you check to make sure that the small USB 3 dock that comes with the Ninja Blade doesn't have the extra caddy stored in there? That's where mine was and I could not find it originally and thought I had only received one. I know that sounds stupid but it is worth checking. Since I already had USB 3 to sata adapters hooked to my PC I would not have even needed the one that came with the Ninja Blade so I might not have noticed the caddy was in there for a long time.

Bingo! I feel like an idiot!

My Ninja Blade arrived a few days ago.

I thought it had a faulty battery charger or little Sony battery as the light did not blink when I plugged it in to charge it up, I just got 2 red lights on the charger (the instructions I downloaded says they blink). Anyway all is well as when charged one of the lights changes to green. The Canon battery plate was also a bit tricky to fit onto the Ninja B due to slightly missaligned terminal holes on it.

Really loving the bright, sharp screen and features/ease of use. The C100 screen looks an even more inadequate tool when you see it alongside the Blade.

Just received my Ninja Blade from Markertek yesterday, with some shipping box external injuries thanks to UPS. Anyway, I opened it while on the phone with Markertek so that they knew about the damage. I had them decide if they wanted me to take back or open it. So, about half an hour of testing, I just don't know if the glitches were caused basically by a cascade of blunt impact as everything inside the box looked fine. Ended up trying to troubleshoot on the phone this morning with Atomos, and turns out my Ninja Blade is going to be replaced. It's unfortunate, I was planning on using it for a shoot this weekend, the screen is beautiful and definitely an improvement over my Ninja 2 which I still have, and will use until the replacement unit arrives.

Those with both Ninja 2 and the Blade, are you hanging onto to both for now or replacing it? I'm on the fence on this one. Wish the Ninja Blade could flip the orientation of the screen.

Sounds like a few of us have been having some fun this week wit the new NB. Some notes from Matobo HQ:

An Edelkrone EVF holder arrived today to mount the NB on. I bought it on spec, thinking I wasn't sure if it would foul against the XLR unit. Actually, I'm bloody impressed with it - easily the match of any Zacuto gear we've bought in the past. I'll post some pics when we get some daylight. It's a goodun.

For us, there are 2 more elephants in the room to tame with the NB. Firstly, HDMI (aaaghhhh!) I've bought a selection of 6 different cable options this week to try - different lengths of swivel head, micro thin, ribbon and screw locking.

I'm going to give a coiled one a go - Erik, I noticed you've got one. We've only got one option I can find in the UK:

http://www.blackbox.co.uk/gb-gb/si/12493/HDMI-Coiled-Cable/S1.O3/hdmi+cable

I spoke to them yesterday and they say the 3m comes in at around 33cm coiled - so I'll get one ordered next week.

These screw-lock cables, I'm finding, are just too bulky and unwieldy. We bought 2. Doh!:

Probably the best of the bunch so far:

A few cm too short at 50cm - but possibly a bit long at 1 metre. Will try, as they're very flexible and compact - just like the Apple ones, but shorter.

The other issue is getting power to a dummy battery eliminator. We've ordered one of these, to run off the taps on the SWIT 8845 batteries:

Hopefully useful work in progress and might help some of you with the same questions - will update as stuff turns up.

Ben.

Just ran the Spyder calibration on the NB and it has worked with no hitches, with a few small tweaks to the colour response either side of the diagonal line - if this works as well as it should in theory, this little thing could kill off a lot of field monitors...

Ben.

Ben, you're right! Yes, as I have found, a 0.5M HDMI cable is just a little too short for most applications - so I have a 0.9M one about to arrive. I looked for a coiled cable but could not find a UK suppleir of one so the link you provided is highly useful - thanks!

Blade vs AVCHD comparisons?
(although I presume it'll be 100% the same as Ninja2 vs AVCHD)..?

Personally, I don't expect to see any in my day to day experiences. It would be nice not to experience the blocking on bright reds - that's the only time when AVCHD shows a weakness, in my experience, workflow and film-making style.

I bought the NB principally as a monitor - the addition of a couple of Sandisk Extreme SSDs gives me a bonus of instant ProRes, but more of a headache with long-term storage. The SSD also makes the NB tangibly heavier - it's surprisingly light by itself.

Ben.

I'll be most interested to hear if NB has any of the intermittent issues that ninja2 has, which is my biggest gripe about my ninja2

Anyone figured out a working loupe setup for the NB already?
So far I've found this: http://www.gridsuportes.com/buy-grid-5-0/ but can`t find any real info about it.
The loupe from http://www.deitygear.com/ (for C100 users IMHO) is too pricey and made for 4" screens.
Atomos dropped the project, but I hope they at least sent out a mail to Kinotehnik (or maybe even Zacuto), giving them a ruff number of their sales figures and encouraging them to come up with a solution...
