C100: New Atomos Ninja Blade With HDMI

Curious if anyone knows - Ninja 2 or Ninja Blade -> If you record DNXHD 220, can they be imported straight into Media Composer with no transcode?
I would presume thats the idea, just curious if anyone has experience with the details of that workflow.

Yes, that's the general idea, it's ready transcoded for you :)

I might be tempted to go back to a C100 ninja blade combo. The screen will double as a usable monitor. :)

Well I went and ordered one from Markertex. They had them in stock with free shipping and it includes the hard case and all the goodies. My SmallHD DP6 just got repaired. The main board was replaced. $200. It's basically brand new now. I'm going to compare them and if the Ninja Blade is a better monitor and I believe it will be I might just sell the DP6. The Ninja Blade is a 1/2" smaller thought. Either way my Ninja 2 will be up for sale soon. Hit me if your interested.

I'm am tempted by the option to tap into the 4k --> uncompressed 8bit 422 HD on my 1Dc.

Atomos OS seems nice, but the recorder is kind of clunky.

The screen is significantly smaller than my current 7" AC7 monitor, but on the other hand the Blade has better monitoring features like waveform.

Still, a 1TB Samsung EVO 840 offers quite a bit of quality HD footage and I know that USB3 speeds from that drive are great.

Many '+' for the Ninja Blade, but one REAL bummer: it was only when I stepped up to the AC7 that I felt that I REALLY could do critical focus by just looking at the screen. My previous DP6 was good, but didn't quite go all the way. And the Blade is even smaller than the DP6. 5" vs 5.6". Still brightness and IQ seems good.

It's a struggle. Would love to try one.

Yeah, and one last annoyance: I can't pick up the 1080p60 from my camera (oupps: 1Dc only records 60p internally. HMDI is 60i max), since the Blade only goes up to 30fps in progressive. That's kind of a shame.

Oupps! =)

There you go, one less issue to worry about... Haven't done any external recording and didn't consider that limitation. Too bad, though!

But since that doesn't work anyway then... I'm kind of leaning towards getting a Ninja Blade...

Drew and Eric, didn't you guys had the same problems i had with the ninja 2 where the unit would drop frames during a long recording like an interview? mine would randomely stop the recording for 1 sec. I found other users on atomos forum with the same problem. We tried everything, changing hdmi cables, changing units, chqnge drives, changing cameras and configurations... No answer and no word from atomos on the forum.

the ninja blade is very tempting with its new screen but i read that even c100 users have this problem with their samourai blade.

other than that i would totally consider this guy, love the idea. But in practice it's been very frustrating and unreliable. I was hoping that i had a bad unit but other users have reported the same problems.

what about you on longer takes (20min and more)?

Really? I would 100% never use it if there were any type of reliability issues like that :| Wondering the same question as you now!

I had a shoot with 5 interview of an hour long each and I am glad I had the internal recording as a backup. That could have been a disaster because the unit stopped in the middle of one of the interview

take a look:

C100 and samourai blade:

as you can tell the unit made me a little nervous :) As we don't have enough things to think about

Now I am not trying to tell you not go for it. I would love to hear that it was a bad unit but... I just can't worry about a piece of equipment that will randomly crash a recording :(

Other than that, I love the unit, it's small, light, easy to use...

I only had a interlacing issue once and it cleared up. This was with a AF-100. Been solid and I'm confident in purchasing the Ninja Blade. I don't intend in using it all the time but the monitor is really good and need that feature almost more than the recorder so it has a dual purpose that the Ninja 2 did not. As you know that monitor wasnt very good.

Yes, the screen of ninja 2 was the weak point.

I hear you Erik, even though that whole experience is making me very shy to buy a blade, I am still tempted just for the screen and the recording could be just for backup. even the point of having a more solid codec to grade is not that big of a deal. I graded the avchd of the C100 and pushed the codec quite a bit and it holds very very well.

Will you make a review, Erik? when are you getting yours?

The AVCHD codec is fine most of the time. I'm pretty sure I will do a review. Hopefully it will get here in a week. Markertex seems to be the only one taking orders and stating it's in stock. We shall see. It's not even on B&H yet at all.

Odyssey 7Q at £2K - If I still had an FS700, a shoo-in. But it's all about quite a lot of stuff that the C100 cannot do. And it's big and full of 'stuff'. Not the sort of thing you can pop on top of a C100.

So, for the Ninja Blade, I read the press release on the way to the UK's BVE show on Tuesday, got a great demo from Robbie on the Atomos booth, bought one straight away, used today on a 5 hour preso (though I'm waiting for Spider).

Hey... It's a Ninja - works great with Canon. It's a Blade - great calibrated screen. As such, it is so much smaller and lighter than my Pix 220, it will fit in the C100 box as a constant companion. Works well with all those little pancake NP-F batteries accumulated by buying Sony camcorders.

The single thing is that I'm tired of the C100 internal LCD panel's out-of-whack representation of what it sees which doesn't just scare clients, it scares me. Of course, the better audio meters will please the Sound Guy, 422 can be nice in strong theatrical lighitng and the robust codec will help. Now the testing starts, long recording, 25pfs, NTSC framerates, etc.

But also looking forward to metadata from the recorder that actually makes the trip to FCPX (unlike much other metadata it seems).

If I owned a Ninja 2, would I upgrade? Hmm, tough call. It's a very nice screen. I'd buy a cheaper Ninja 2 for second and third camera - everything is interchangeable. I've been dithering for so long on a Samurai Blade with H2S, lucked out that Atomos got there first.
