C100: New Atomos Ninja Blade With HDMI

Couple of questions:

1. Can you charge the 970 batteries on the charger that comes with the Ninja? Anyone tried? *apparently you can - thanks Matt for the info*
2. Has anyone come up with a good 2.35 guide solution (ie masking the device, tape etc.)? The one thing I really hate with the C100 is not being able to have the 2.35 guide appear with the waveform. It's one or the other, which is dumb. So I'm thinking of masking the Ninja instead. Can use tape but that would cover the menu buttons. Curious if anyone else has dealt with this. *I drew some lines on a screen protector which will suffice for now I guess :)*

Cheers.

Would you buy the ninja blade if you are primarily after a monitor or would somethink like the SmallHD ac7 be better?

The beauty of the ninja is it works as a great monitor with the added benefit of prores recording should you ever need it.

atomos please do something like what they do settings Atomic Samurai, whenever restart ninja blade, shall restore all work settings, like piking, waveform.please do a custom profile to use...is already boring every time after restart to restore the necessary functions working diplay

Thanks

Anybody using a spyder to calibrate their blade? Is it even compatible with the ninja or just the samourai?

I am tempted to get one. Would love to hear from users that own one.

Yes, been using one with a Ninja Blade for a few months now and have calibrated it a couple of times.

It has given me huge WYSIWYG confidence and I get no nasty surprises in the cutting room.

I'm still baffled as to why Atomos haven't really marketed this as one of their trump cards.

Also, if you buy the Datacolor Spyder Elite 4 and Spyder TV HD software, it gives you calibration right through the chain - we use a calibrated Ninja Blade for acquisition, the NLE monitors are calibrated with Spyder Elite 4 and the broadcast monitor (running on a Matrox) is calibrated with the Spyder TV HD. All using the same Atmos/Datacolor probe.

Or you could buy a non-calibrated TV Logic/Marshall/Small HD/etc for twice as much and you won't get a ProRes recorder included. Of course, you can tweak them to colour bars - but I have more faith in the Atomos/Datacolor calibration tool and I'm getting noticeably more consistent results.

Hey Ben,

by "Datacolor Spyder Elite 4", do you mean the atomos spyder? are they different?

Thanks!

Yeah, I'm also curious about this: do the PC Spyders work with the Blade and how?

Also, 2.35:1 guide solution. Anything?

PC spyder works, but you need to purchase a special LANC cable from Atomos for it to communicate with Blade.

There are feature requests for frame guides like 2.35:1, no idea if Atomos would implement that in the next firmware release though.

The Atomos probe (the triangular thing that hangs and sits against the screen) is just a re-badged Datacolor Spyder 4 probe. As a piece of hardware, it's OS agnostic - it's a USB probe that works with either PC or Mac (we only use Macs.)

The Atomos Spyder kit comes with an additional USB to LANC adapter cable that connects the Blade into one USB port on your computer. The Spyder then plugs into another USB port. You then use the freely-downloadable Atomos calibrator app (http://www.atomos.com/calibrator/ - PC and Mac versions available) to do the calibration.

If you already own a Datacolor Spyder, Atomos offer the USB to LANC cable as an alternative: http://cvp.com/index.php?t=product/atomos_ao-atomcab004. This connects the Blade to your computer - then follow the guide above.

By getting a couple of other bits of Datacolor software, you can use the same probe to calibrate your other monitors. You need to order the "upgrades", as these are software only, for use with an existing probe (ie the Atomos one you've bought):

http://spyder.datacolor.com/portfolio-view/spyder4pro-to-spyder4elite-upgrade/ - this will create monitor profiles that use your computer video card to adjust levels (a bit like a LUT)

http://spyder.datacolor.com/portfolio-view/spyder4tv-hd-upgrade/ - if you're using an external video card (Matrox, BM Intensity, etc etc), this allows you to set up any monitor or TV, by instructing you to make small tweaks via the monitor or TV's own internal adjustments/proc amps. It also enables you to accurately set up any domestic TV/projector you've got.

The Atomos calibrator came with a discount code (10% I think) to buy these upgrades.

The information was a little opaque on the Datacolor site when i first looked and I ended up speaking at length with the product manager in Zurich, so hopefully that helps explains things.

Which PC software package does it come with? Express?

If you mean the Atomos Spyder, it doesn't come with any additional software - you have to buy the software upgrades to use the probe on other screens.

Ben.
Ahh, okay. That sounds like a pretty bad deal - wouldn't getting a desktop Spyder and one of the LANC cables actually be cheaper?

A quick look at online prices suggests no, you save around £20 getting the Atomos Spyder + subsequent upgrade.

Hi all,

Bought my blade the other day and have put in an order for a Grid 5.0 viewfinder- designed for the Red 5 inch monitor but well suited to the Blade apparently. I was just wondering has anyone else purchased? I've been emailing incessantly for 9 days now with no reply, i'm fearing i've been ripped off and would love to use it in 9 days time for a wedding. Has anyone had similar issues, and is there any chance I could borrow someone else's for the day??!

I purchased one of these from them last year for use on the Blackmagic Cinema Camera and it took a while because they were shipping from South America somewhere. But I did get it. So I would not be too worried that you were scammed. The unit was nice but simple. I wish I still had it to test with the Ninja Blade though.

Wow, talk about reviving an old thread. The Ninja Blade is pretty good for judging focus with two caveats.

1. The included sunshade is a joke, it's useless in bright sun. Spen the $79.00 it costs and get the RED Hoodman that is black with the Hoodman logo in red for the 5" RED display. You can't judge focus if you can't see the image.
2. Along the same lines, the Ninja Blade screen is not super bright, I think it's perhaps 450 nits or so? So even with the sunshade, can be a tough call. I shot with two weeks with mine in the Sahara Desert in May in 130F heat and as you can imagine, the sun in the Sahara is a bit bright. If I brought my face right up to the edge of the Hoodman, it sealed out the light, but then the problem was, even with my reading glasses, I cannot focus my eyes on a subject five inches away, you may be younger and can do that but I can't. i ended up lengthening the Hoodman shade with Cinefoil and it worked although it was delicate and kept getting crunched.

For interiors, the Blade is great for judging focus and exposure. Unfortunately the capacitive touch screen has a high gloss finish so therefore is pretty reflective. I wish it were matte finish. But overall, Blade has been a top notch piece of gear. If I was buying today, I would buy the Shogun Inferno. 7" is better than 5" and 4K 60P capable is better than 1080 60i capable. But of course, four times the money too!
