C100: New Atomos Ninja Blade With HDMI

Good stuff Matt! Thanks. I'm looking forward to getting mine next week. That pixel shift is very strange. I'll test for this when I get it to make sure you don't have a bad copy. If you take another break from editing today (That is if you actually able to get any work done at all :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)) It might be good to send Atomos those very good samples.

I really like how compact it is and the screen is great. I also have a very good Panasonic field monitor if I need one. The 7.7 screen on the Odyssey7 is also very good. Saw one at NAB, but it's also $1300 compared to $1000 and the Odyssey7 requires proprietary SSD drives that are $395 for 256GB. The Ninja Blade has several different low cost options including spinning disks. A SanDisk Extreme II Internal SSD (240GB) cost $230.
This is how I decided to buy the Ninja Blade. And yes it's shipping now.

Cheers Matt - useful stuff.

I'm weighing up the Ninja Blade for slightly different reasons - but, heck, possibly relevant to this conversation...

I'm trying to resolve the issue of a 5DIII as a B Cam looking ropey (lacking detail, skin looking plasticky etc), when cut with a C100.

I went to the UK BVE show yesterday and came away thinking about this new Ninja versus spending what wouldn't be a huge amount more on the BMC 4K.

I'm pretty certain an external recorder won't resolve the 5DIII issues, as I'm presuming all of the LPF malarkey Canon stuck on the mark III to counter moire is upstream of the HDMI output and therefore I'll just get a slightly higher bitrate version of the same compromised image. Or does anyone know differently on that?

Also, the BMC 4K has the following potential advantages from my perspective at the mo:

- 2 potential shot lengths from the one clip on a 1080P timeline
- A lower 4K bitrate (220 Mbps) than BM's implementation of 1080P ProRes (350)
- EF active mount - will wait to see what, if any, issues that has
- A nice sharp and detailed 1080P B Cam with some insight into 4K workflows along the way

I know this a little off-piste from what you're discussing above, but I wonder if others are having similar thoughts/issues?

Ben.

Without their respective batteries, the Ninja Blade is — understandably, I'd say — a little more than double the weight of the DP4, and that's before you add the hard drive.

If you are doing mostly weddings, and not necessarily material that is destined for broadcast or for heavy color timing, I suspect the decision comes down to a) how much handheld work you're shooting at the wedding; and b) whether or not you and your editing platform will perform better with a codec like Prores or DNxHD.

And if you need the loupe of the DP4, that's another story, as no such option exists for the Ninja Blade yet.

Uh oh. Just saw the Atomos email in my inbox and pulled the trigger. Whoops. Got the H2S connector too which I've been meaning to snag for a while.

In other news, if anyone needs to buy a Ninja2... this guy's got one for sale ;)

Thanks jbklynnyc..Movie wedding yet enough AVCHD codec from C100.so I believe the amount of information is much smaller and does not require huge data storage.I was thinking that money is not a big difference between ninja blade and DP4,if ninja blade has very good quality LCD, then swing by Ninja Blade, I need a magnifying glass to DP4.I hope someone do a comparison test between the two

Thanks such great info @Mattdavis.

if you use the hdmi out of the ninja to your ac7, does the overlays of the ninja go to your ac7? How does this work.

thank again, and sorry about your editing... ;-)

the HDMI out on Atomos device is purely loop through, means clean HDMI signal with no overlay at all

Update on the 2 pixel shift: Atomos now aware of it, looking at 2:2 pulldown removal. Quick workaround is to use 50i and do the 2:2 in the edit software for now. Should be fixed beyond v5.1.

So this bad boy arrived today and I'd say the thing I'm most impressed with are the focus and exposure aids. The zebras are clear and easy to see, the waveform is VERY nice – big and modern looking with a high-resolution, and the peaking function seems much better than the one on the C100 itself; maybe this is thanks to the 720p panel. Also very excited about the Favorite and Reject functions as described earlier in the thread. A great starting point to remembering those golden bits in the 90-minute keynote!

One thing that freaked me out a little bit was that to turn on the unit, you only need to tap the power button. I was holding it down for a second or two and that did not work at all. A quick tap to turn on, and a longer hold to turn off.

It came with the case, and I heard somewhere else that Atomos is including this in all Blade packages now?

that's great Nate,

would you be ok to do a couple of test of long takes if you have a change? Just to check if the ninja splits files with your C100. Something like a couple of shots of 1:30h.

Would that be ok?

Sure, I'll set up a nice boring shot of my dogs sleeping. Any particular frame rates or pulldown settings you're interested in?

By the way, here's the release notes for eh Ninja 2 v4.21 Firmware Update. Relevant?:

FID:041104210421

* Improved occasional split clips on long recordings using the C100 and N2 combination
* Improved lower cost SSD performance by partitioning sectors to 1MB boundary expanding the number of affordable SSD's supported

Well I wasn't the one who originally requested the long shot but I have always noticed the issues of splitting videos or stopping recording randomly seems more common in 24P mode. It seems that sometime the cadence gets interrupted and that seems to either stop the recording or split the videos. I have had much better luck (no issues that I know of) when shooting 30PSF myself. Maybe Krick will weigh in again but I vote for 24P.

Thanks Nate and icicie22.

Yes I was thinking of 24p with pulldown.

Nate I saw that release but I sold my ninja 2 by the time it came out. That may have just fixed it. Thank you for doing the test, that's very nice of you.

Do you also have the 2 pixels on the right of the image that Matt mentioned?

My Ninja Blade just arrived as well. Huge improvement on the screen, this is what I wish the Ninja2 was in every way. Screen is definitely suitable for focusing and will also help my shoulder rig substantially as I can slide it back more. I found the Ninja utterly useless as a monitor because it was so blown out usually. I don't need ProRes all the time, so like many of you I'm sure it ended up spending tons of time on the shelf since I already have a nice Ikan Vx7i field monitor.

I picked up the H2S as well, and AB-ed this monitor with my Flanders Scientific CM171. Extremely color accurate out of the box, and it supports C-Log LUTs too (as does the FSI... unbelievable monitor btw). The LCD on the C100 has such an annoyingly blue cast, it's thrilling to see a decent image for once. The H2S makes the unit heavier but I've been in so many situations requiring SDI lately this will hopefully simplify.

Here are some (crappy) pics I snapped with my 6D. Let me know if any of you have specific questions about features.

Now I just hope the Ninja2 brings back some bones on ebay... only had that things for like 6 months :Drogar-Shock(DBG):
