new article - HVX Framerates explained

The link to The effect of 60 frames per second(60p)............. must be wrong
and i wish you a Happy New Year

Audio is recorded under all cases, but it is recorded at real-time rates. So if you play the footage back at the same frame rate you recorded it at, the audio will work. In almost all cases the camera ignores the audio for an off-speed clip, but it is recorded and you can make use of it in post if you want to.

By the way, from the sample files I have downloaded there are always 4 audiochannels recorded. Is this correct? No option to just record two of them?

And is there a function to begin a new MXF file without stopping recording? Could be usefull like an index mark on DV.

HD always records four channels, so does DV50.

There is an index function that you can set marks in an MXF file, perhaps that will accomplish what you're looking for? When in DV tape mode it sets index marks on the tape, in P2 mode it sets a mark in the metadata in the MXF.

Very good article guys.

Cool comparison clips.. very nice :)

115? that's crazy!
..also I (only just) noticed that we do get 30p on the 50Hz version.. great!

It could be useful to have the ability to quickly start a new file, so afterwards you could delete the leftover from the P2 card.
Or if someone is recording a live event to a cineporter, it would be useful to be able to split the file while not missing a bit. Wonder if that MXF index mark makes it into FCP?
How quickly will the camera begin recording again if I quickly press the record button twice?

Barry/Jarred -
Could you save framerates in the user presets on the side of the camera? I could see using the overcranking for slow-mo on some broll and would like to pop in and out of it without digging through menus.

barry - great article - thanks so much - I showed this to my director and he finally understands what the different frames rates mean visually - great example

Thanks Jarred

I like the clips shown side-byside for comparison.

In PAL land with a timebase of 25, I guess the 48fps (at 24p) is going to be the same slo-mo we would experience at maximum. 50p played on a 25p timeline.

Still baffles me if they can do 720/30p on the PAL model, why cant they do 60p? or at least something higer than 50. I want that super slo-mo!!!!!! :-)

hope someone can help me out here... i downloaded kaku's HVXskidking60p.mov file (which is 25:15 @ 60 fps) and tried to dump it into a 720/24p timeline in FCP expecting to see it 2.5 times slower, but after rendering it, it shows up at the same duration (actually 25:06) with a 24 frame-rate look... no slo-mo. what am i doing wrong?

Use Cinema tools to conform the 60p clip to 24. Fast and easy. No rendering needed.
