New Adapter for Canon EOS with aperture control

Well for one thing there are quite a few lenses it doesn't support which I have. :) I'd be curious to see what it does, but not at $125.00. I will wait for the Birger electronic mount converter that is supposed to be out soon.

For a mechanical standpoint, the proximity of the aperature relative to the focal point is going to change the image quality in some way. Total guess, but that's what I think.

I'm imagining the Birger is going to be more money than your camera body costs. The only issue I see with this is that it probably has glass around that aperture which will increase diffraction.

Well given I bought an AF100, I doubt it :) But seriously, they said it would not be that bad. I am thinking < $400 and I am okay with that.

It's definitely more than $400. If I remember correctly, I've heard $1100 for the version with remote focus control, $700 without. Check the AF100 section for more reliable numbers, though.

I'm on those threads, nothing solid has been announced yet. Earlier discussion was a lot less, but and definitely a lot less than the Red version since an external follow focus is not necessary if they translate the electronics between the protocols, which is do-able from what I can see and as much of the protocols as I have studied.

I also think there was a lot of 'you'll be surprised about the price'.

Truth is, they will sell SUBSTANTIALLY more of these for GH1/GH2/AF100 and other m4/3 mounts than they ever did with the Red adapter if they price it right.

ok...I'm the sucker who just bought one. I'll check it out to see if it is any good. Might be interesting

Yay! I look forward to your results.

Regarding the price of the Birger -- it's true that it could be lower than I expected, but I think the introductory price will probably be somewhere in that range. The primary market for the birger adapter are, (I think,) 5dmk2 owners and fairly serious videographers. For this group, $700 or so seems like a pretty agreeable price. That said, it wouldn't surprise if something similar comes out for around the price you mention, to appeal to the Gh1/2 crowd. We shall see!

Hey Coco, I'm curious to see these work out, especially because a lens is designed to work with the aperture inside it, ie between the front and rear elements
and with these adapters we have a new iris behind the sensor. On a technical level these adapters could work as EOS lenses default state is for the aperture to
be wide open (opposite to nikon which is closed).

I know from my own experiments where I have placed diffusion between the rear element and the sensor that I have had quite good results.
Placing an aperture will give great control over exposure but I cannot begin to guess how this will affect depth of field (due to its incorrect positioning between elements)
or how it will affect bokeh. In all likely hood the side effects would vary from lens to lens, and differ between zoom and prime.

Well I am pretty serious since I bought an AF100, and I think $700 is a bit steep, but, given there is no competition, they pretty much have fair game. Given the reduced complexity of the design for the base model, pulling power from the camera and using the cameras aperature/focus controls, the real issue become build quality and electronics. Given the translation is digital, between the protocols, it's really not that expensive in that realm, especially given what the EOS lenses use as a controller chip in them. It probably depends on what you get for your money, as in, their base model might just come with more features driving the price up.

Since they've been so hush hush, we just don't have any clue. I'd really like to see it no more than $500 myself for what it is.

Ahh! I had missed that thread. Looks like they missed those announcement dates they were targetting :) Guess I'll need to save up a *little* more cash for it :) Thanks for the heads up on that.

Any thoughts on this thing? I suppose there would be some negatives involved, but the iris on this thing does look fairly nice. Might be worth a try, I suppose.

Oh GOD! are you serious? maybe.... no.... maybe possib.... no...no no sorry....:Drogar-Mad(DBG): but...
