Can one render out to Jpeg2000 format from within Vegas ?

Yes, generally speaking, Cineform will have better quality than MJPEG. However, you can adjust the quality on MJPEG and MJPEG2000 and trade-off quality for smaller filesize, Cineform only has "one" quality setting.

John, But how does the quality of MJPEG2000 compare with the quality of Cineform Since both are based on wavelet compression ??

Bitrates ? But do these 2 codecs even have bitrate adjustment ?
From within Vegas there is no bitrate adjustment for Cineform or for JPEG2000 i think. But cineform runs smoothly on my system. Whereas the JP2K files stutter. But that maybe because cineform is running at low bitrate ? Or do they sell a cineform codec that allows higher bitrate encoding and such customisation. I think Cineforms implementation within vegas is aimed only at being an intermediatary fromat rather than a distribution format. Plz let me know on all these things. It will be real helpful for me. Thanks a lot.

Well, no, they don't have bitrate adjustments as such. My point was that at under similar conditions, they look virtually identical. Cineform doesn't run at a lower bitrate, it is just a more efficient codec due to better software programming. You seem to imply that you want to use these codecs for distribution. Neither of these codecs are suitable for that if you're talking about distributing content that a wide audience will be able to view. If that's the case, the you should be looking at Windows Media, DivX, Flash or Quicktime. Those are pretty universal with Flash being the most widely playable on a variety of platforms.

Nopes John. Never mentioned that i was planning distribution.
I need playback of my videos on just one system but that is crucial to my presentation. Hence im looking for the ideal codec. That could give immense clarity and color space as well as never pixellate. Our source is all motion graphics and title sets with some occasional hd video thrown inbetween. I definitely understand the basics of public distribution and that is not my goal here.

Buy a Blackmagic Intensity Pro card and use their MJPEG codec. It interfaces with Vegas just fine, so you can render using their MJPEG codec directly from within Vegas. The card will play back full-up 1920x1080 4:2:2 HD video flawlessly using either an HDMI connection or analog component output. It does require a relatively recent computer with a PCI Express slot but, otherwise, nothing else special. It works great.

My Current system can playback 1920x1080p Mjpeg flawlessly without a blackmagic card. Ive tried this with vegas' Mpjpeg .mov renders with highest quality settings of the codec. Playsback smooth. I tried rendering with LEAD Mjpeg codecs trial codec and it renders fine and playsback Mjpeg 1920x1080p just fine. LEAD JPEG2000 demo codec was also tried but resulted in choppy playback. The blackmagic card might be a very expensive investment jus to playback Mjpeg. At least out of my budget. My system is a 3Ghz Core 2 Duo with 4 gb ram.

If your system can play back 1920x1080 MJPEG, then it appears that you are all set. I guess this thread is closed.

This thread is not about that is it. I wanted to know how to render JPEG2000. This has nothing to do with MJPEG running on my system. MJPEG A and B do not soften but rather turn blocky as you said earlier. So thats the main reason i was looking at JPEG2000. But since that seems to run choppy. My question would be .....what other format can i render to which might avoid DCT based encoding. Is cineform a non pixellating codec that turns soft rather than pixellate ? If so what do i need to buy in order to be able to produce a high bitrate Cineform video ? OR...is there any other codec that has the capacity to turn soft when zoomed in rather than pixellate ?
