Here's a photo of an advertisement for the new 70D http://www.canonrumors.com/ Click on the photo to enlarge it so it's readable. Official announcement is July 2nd.

Anyone care to speculate if this thing will have a headphone jack. AF is 5 times faster in live mode. I hope Canon knows the reputation of the GH3 has for video quality which is the 70D's direct competition. If this cam skips the headphone jack again, this will be the biggest joke ever.

Bigger joke than the Knock Knock? Ok, seriously...this is primarily a stills camera with impressive specs. 7fps stills? WiFi? New Digic5+ processor? New sensor? HDR? It looks pretty good on paper. Yeah, I hope it has a headphone out too, but I wouldn't bet on it. What I'm really interested in however is the performance of the new sensor and then down the road what the Magic Lantern team can do to it.

I'm most interested to see if it has lower levels of aliasing/moire or if it's the same as the 60D/7D. Nikon has done something about those things with the 5200/7100...we'll see if Canon figured it out.

I'm sure they will skip it just to piss off a few people, but realistically if you aren't using a low noise mixer preamp you aren't getting the greatest audio anyway. If you are serious about upping the quality of your audio, get a mixer. The jucedlink mixers are cheap, tiny, quiet and readily available used on ebay. You can use it with unbalanced or balanced mics with proper XLR cables. I got one a year ago, just a 2 channel without phantom power and I would never work without a mixer again.
I'm really just looking forward to see if the 70D has improved the resolution at all with the new sensor and digic 5. Wait and see.

Right now, in terms of video, I think all Canon is aiming at is bringing out something similar to the D5200/D7100: same-old H.264 codec, 8-bit 422 HDMI out, decent-but-not-awesome DR, and no aliasing/moire issues. It would be quite a comeback if they did that. Except many of us are looking at RAW nowadays, and wouldn't feel compelled to buy another H.264 camera with decent-but-not-awesome DR.

Yep, that was my plan. I already have a Juiced link CX231 dual channel with Phantom power. Not sure why you wouldn't get one with phantom power. So many good mics require it.

Hopefully, the IQ will at least be as good as the 5DIII and sharpen up nicely in post as others say it will. This cam will be directly compared to the video IQ of the GH3 just because of the price point. I hope Canon realizes that. I think it's between the 70D and GH3 for me. I've got Canon lenses so I'm really hoping against hope Canon pulled their head out of their butt for this one. Yeah, I know. Improbable.

I have 2 Sony wired studio Lavs ECM55 and ECM66. They are both powered with AA batteries. I just got the Jucedlink to accommodate them. I prefer the ECM66 to a shotgun because I travel a lot and the 66 is unidirectional and I use it as a shotgun. Don't laugh it works very well at 18 inches from the subject and light enough to hang at the end of a fishing poll if I need to.

As for the 70D competing with the 5Dmk3, I just rented an mk3 this week for a shoot and was completely blown away with the results. I had the 60D running as a b-cam and although I think the 60D produces great images, just not in the same ballpark with the MK3.

I planed to get a 70D, but I just don't know. I've been shooting with an MK2 for years, but never bought one. I honestly think I may pick up one while they are still available for so cheap. Now that would be a killer b-cam.

has everyone missed the part about the functional autofocus for video? thats all im worried about, that alone sells it

Looks good, but not available till Sept and $1,100 plus. Unless the IQ is remarkably better than the 60D I think I will sell my 60D and get a 5Dmk2 to go with my 600D bcam. The new autofocus is a cool gadget, but not all that useful for manual focus shooting.

I wonder how it's in low light, what the noise looks like, and how high an ISO you can shoot without getting splotchy. Really, considering the size of the sensor, it should be better at this than the GH3, but you never know.

Wow!! Canon sure has put beefed up the video recording formats in this camera compared to the 60D! They obviously want it to compete with the Panasonic GH3 for video. Checkout the recording options for 1080p:

1920x1080(24p,25p,30p) IPB H.264 MOV at 31 Mbps

1920x1080(24p,25p,30p) ALL-I H.264 MOV at 91 Mbps

Just as importantly ( if not more so ), the 4 GB video clip length limit is now removed. The 70D is the first Canon to be able to partition clips into 4 GB files, just like the Panasonic GH3 does, thus allowing for super long continuous recording. Clearly, this camera is aimed at taking sales away from the GH3.

The 70D is not offering any support for 1080/60p, though, which the Panasonic GH3 does offer. And the Panasonic's 1080p IPB MOV option records at 50 Mbps. Plus the Panasonic also offers the option to record in AVCHD, and has a headphones jack, which the 70D lacks.

Still, if the low light/high ISO performance of this camera is as good as they say that it is, this camera will probably become extremely popular for shooting video. For its body price is $100 less than the GH3, and it is fully functional with all recent Canon EF lenses.

NOTE: I managed to dig these specs up from the canon.jp website, by translating this 70D document written in Japanese:

With Canon doing so much to provide improved video features on the 70D, one can only wonder this:

What will the video specs of the upcoming 7D Mk II be like??
.

Yeah it's probable better but by what percent? I just shot a full blown shoot with a 5Dmk3 and the image was amazing, but I've shot with the 5D2 in many similar shoots and was always equally impressed. My gut feeling is the 70D will fall somewhere between the 5Dmk2 and the 60D for what you can pull out of it. I have a 60D and and 600D bcam as for DR I shoot cinestyle dialed as flat as a pancake and there is plenty of DR and detail to work with. All these camera are great. I shoot, the client says, that's great, approved, they pay me and that's the last time I look at it. The world is moving so fast I barely have time to look at the final cut before I send it to the client. 2 seconds later I'm on to something else.
I do like the BMCC but the clients just don't give a s*%t. If it looks good they're happy. They think the same way, finish the job, get paid. If I were shooting a feature for a year and presenting it on a big screen I would certainly be talking differently, but these cameras are used to produce and make money, and they all can, all of them.
And don't fool yourself about shooting with no light even with an Mk3. If there is no light there will be noise. My last scene was at dusk with the talent fully lit in the foreground at ISO 800 with a garden in the background underexposed. It was very noisy.
As for moire it did a good job with fine detailed patterns in wardrobe, but not entirely. I spotted some moire in a few places. At this point I think a 5Dmk2 with a mosaic AA filter would do the same job or better. Don't know for sure, but suspect.

I may be wrong but I don't think the 70D will produce as impressive an "IMAGE" as compared to a brand new, off the shelf, antique, 5Dmk2. By the time the 70D hits' the shelves they will be giving 5Dmk2s away.(I hope)

What am I going on about? Go out and shoot with any of these cameras and spend less time worrying if the quality is good enough. The cameras are all better than 99% of the shooters. Find some paying clients and make some money.

At first I wasn't all that excited about the AF, but I saw a 70D demo video that I currently cannot find, but it was demonstrating the AF and it had a bunch of slider shots and then I got excited. Sometimes it is really difficult to rack on a tiny lens while doing a slider move. We will have to wait and see

I really can't even believe this. There is no headphone jack to monitor the audio! What a bunch of morons! THERE IS NO HEADPHONE JACK!!!! I still can't believe it. They come up with a new focus system primarily to improve focus in live view (movie mode) and they leave off a rudimentary feature like a headphone jack to monitor that nice mic you're feeding into that mic jack.

The GH3 has a headphone jack! What a bunch of morons. Canon, you have failed to compete. This is like cookies without milk, french fries without ketchup, cake without ice cream. They really are thinking that no one will buy the 7DII if they put a headphone jack on this POS.

There is no taking sales away from the GH3 without a headphone jack. Frankly, I'm not sure what I'm going to do at this moment. I have a feeling this cam is going to turn out excellent quality video and the focus will be stellar, and I have EOS lenses. And I certainly don't want to fork ove $3K+ on a 5DIII given what the 70D is forecasting for the 5DIV or the 7DII. It's just a quandary.

Headphone jacks are reserved for customers in the over $3,000 Canon sales & marketing dept.
Get a Jucedlink for what ever DSLR, you won't regret it.

What interests me in the 70D is the hope of improved low light performance with the first really new APS-C sensor from Canon in years. But when it comes to shooting video, how does it compare with the Canon 6D? That's a $700 more, but may be the least expensive route to shooting full frame. The apparent removal of the 12 min limit, and to a much lesser extent, the improved AF in movie mode, are welcome improvements. If the new AF works with my L glass, that would indeed be a worthy accomplishment. I now shoot with a 60D, with the Mosaic filter and a Tascam DR-60D. I'm thinking that getting a 70D may make a decent 2nd body, but maybe I am better served just plunking down the bucks on a 5D Mk III and be done with it.

I have a 60D and a 600D and have been renting or borrowing 5D when needed. I been holding off buying one for years, but would be really great to have a FF in the bag every day. I just shot with a 5DIII last week and although a great camera, what I've shot with an Mk2 over the years is not much different for IQ if not better sometimes.
The 6D is more than a new 5D2 without a titanium case and also gotten some less than good reviews.
For the money the mk2 is looking like a good option. I don't really care about Wifi and the new 70D focus looks cool, but I would still never trust the camera to focus anything important.
So many choices in the candy store these days it's great.
