Karl, I really enjoyed "Negative Image!" It's not easy at all to develop real suspense and deliver truly scary moments and a satisfying ending all in just 6 minutes. Yet you pulled it off with a solid performance and great production values as well. Nice concept with great visual storytelling. I really appreciate the lack of dialogue which is refreshing and challenging to pull off. Your lighting is quite atmospheric and appropriately moody and your visual FX are top notch! A real pleasure to be taken on a cinematic ride by such a talented and skilled filmmaker. On another note, I was the cinematographer on Amy O's film "No Soliciting." Holy crap. You win. Loved it. Every minute. Like a super condensed version of the very best of "The X-Files." Just a simple scary story told in carefully crafted way. If anything disappointed me - and nothing really did - I kinda wish there was no imagery of the Kane killer outside of the negative images and the shadows. Though I did like the swirling leaves. And now I'll never be able to look at the leaves my kids track in the same way. I think you could have killed the narration, too. It's a nice touch, kind of gives it an EC Comic kind of vibe, but it might have been spookier without it. The conversation on the phone and the slow zoom into the magazine cover says it all. Question: Budget? And are you making features?
This was great. I haven't really followed the Fests much in the past, but watching this, holy moly, what a high standard. The breath on the back of the neck shot creeped the hell out of me!
Really good sound editing on this, definitely helped with the tension. I liked the quirky narration too.

Great job once again. I think this would make an excellent first feature film if expanded. More specifically, a very doable No-Budget feature film. The concept is perfect, basically one man, one location. You've proven that you've got the skills to create a lot out of very little, all by yourself. Why wait any longer? You're ready!

Yeh, the V/O is debatable. I'd rather not use V/O unless Im having fun with it beyond being exposition. I kinda felt I had to explain a)why he was shooting on film in a digital age. But it's main purpose was b) a guy having a philosophy, which he is betrayed by. I think without the V/O it wouldn't be as ironic. However, as you say the film would still probably work without it. So who knows! I do like that the V/O gives the audience a moment to think before it ends, I'm a sucker for cycles (even the end phones conv is a hark back to the start of the film), and I like V/O that has a different meaning when you change the context. But it'd be interesting to see how it changed the film if it wasn't on.
Not making features yet, but before I die I'll get at least one out!
Budget : Hard to say. Photo equipment was £180 (But I sold it for £100, so £80 in total). Leaf blower was £40 (but I got that refunded). Locations were free. I think I probably spent about £60 on bits and pieces (ink cartridges, waterproof print paper, keep out sign, music box, blinds). £170 on stock sound effects/music and the VO artist. £20 3d fly. £200 on food for everyone and petrol (the kitchen is a friends so I took them out for dinner to say thanks, and took John/Pete for a few meals)
Best guess £550 ish. Actually more than I thought, but it's the expenses that really add up.
Thanks Adrian. You should go back and check out some of the past fests. Some great work in there from filmmakers in this fest and also many who were unfortunately absent from this fest. I'm glad you like the breath though, no-one has commented on that so it's great to hear it worked for you. That was the first scene I wrote.

I am torn between making a feature and practising more. So much more to learn! I do have a fear of making one, like jumping off a plane.

This film was my favorite. It was shot beautifully, not to mention the light treatments were stunning. I loved every part of it!!!

Great Film!! I loved that there was very little dialogue in this. It is always fun to watch a story rather than hear it. Not a fan of the smoke ghost shot at the end but this is a top quality film. Great editing and sound effects. Definitely one of my final 3 pics for sure. Best of luck and look forward to seeing more of you work.

I think we can all agree this film is the best, it's the way you said it. By saying 'out classed' you aren't saying this is the best, but the others are of 'no class'. I personally don't care, but I can see how people might take offense.

Yep and then accusing them of being insecure for being offended in the guise of a supposed apolagy doesnt help either fluffy. Just think about it - these threads are for your fellow filmmakers to discuss there films, give constructive criticism and should always be about giving respect and support - what it isnt is youtube... So show more respect to your filmmaking peers - after all your a filmmaker yourself here ain't you? I think we can leave it at that (as its Darklines thread)

Cheers maranfilms. I was really concerned about the asylum stuff because I couldn't light it myself. So it was a case of walking round and finding stuff that was suitable. The shot where David bends down to pick up the music box we found a shaft of light and built the shot around that part of the room. Later in post I masked off the outer edges and added post smoke to give it a more sculpted look. Thanks again and glad you enjoyed.
Cheers fluffy! I always look forward to your CGIshenanigans and was hoping you'd get your short made for this fest. I saw what you did with a greenscreen in your backroom and it's very much in the same vein we work most of the time.
Thanks for the comments Filmcritic. I love to hear what worked and didn't. Unfortunately I can't watch this film right now with fresh eyes so it's fascinating to hear the reaction. Im actually begining to like this 6 min edit in some ways more than the 10. I'm gonna take a step back for a while, give it a few weeks before I return to tart up the final edit. A break is good.
