NBA Playoffs Thread

If Kobe happens to be a sleeper member of this board and is reading this, Kobe, please don't put us through this, can you just knock them out early and cruise to a nice win next time? I'm too young to start using anti anxiety meds.

Awright... You found me. Got to keep things interesting, though... Couldn't you just see me lying in wait. Did it look like I was even trying in the first half. The Black Mamba likes drama.

I can't believe nobody here is talking about the controversy of Lakers-Spurs Game 4.
I guess there aren't many Spurs fans in the house?

controversy? Come on...

If you watched that whole game, how many times did Kobe get into the lane and get HACKED, and it was a no call... c'mon...

Another thing, on the Laker's last possession, they should have gotten a fresh 24 as that shot by Fisher grazed the rim, instead the got the ball with 2 seconds and Kobe was forced into a bad shot.

Even Popovich and Barry said the refs called it right.

Bottom line, the Lakers outplayed them all night.

The NBA credibility is in a freefall. The officiating has gotten so inconsistent and questionable that I am losing my taste for watching even the playoffs.

I used to laugh at people who said games were fixed or there was an agenda.

I have to admit that over the last few seasons, starting with the atrocious Heat-Mavs Finals farce, that I have slowly started to believe that NBA has an agenda which puts money ahead of the integrity of the game, and many outcomes have been influenced by it.

With this season, and especially the playoffs, this has been solidified for me. Not that it was ever perfectly fair to begin with, since people are capable of making mistakes, etc. Referees are only human. But it has gotten so blatant that interest in the game is waning cause it seems fixed to some degree.

NBA officiating is the worst of any sport on earth. I've seen it called both ways, for my team, against my team, home court, away team, nothing is consistent with the officiating and the refs definitely dictate the outcomes.

Lakers are the current darlings of the NBA and it's obvious.

KOBE is favored more than any other player in the league when it comes to absurd ticky tack calls.

Barry was fouled, should have got the call. Kobe would have gotten it, but wait ........

He's not a superstar, right ?

The NBA needs to fix this system.

Go Celtics. : /

I completely disagree with your assessment...

I think you can watch a full game and see "bad" or "questionable" calls on both sides...

I also think basketball is by far the toughest sport to officiate.

I was actually thinking about offciating last night watching the ball game and how I'd rank the major proffesional leagues offciating. I'd go something like this -

MLB
NBA (minus the ref gambling scandel, which seems to have gone unnoticed in sports news lately)
NHL
NFL

It is the volume of the bad or questionable calls that makes it so sketchy. I cannot ever remember a time when officiating was such a popular topic of disgust for NBA fans. When you listen to the sports talk shows the day after games, it invariably revolves around debating the officials performance, whether it be about inconsistency or bias. Half of the time they are not even talking about the game anymore, just the rules or the game-changing calls. It also seems to be a topic during in-game announcing.

It has hurt the NBA's image so much this year that the league has announced that they will be instituting fines for flopping next season. This is an unprecedented decision by the league.

Hubie Brown was ranting about the non-foul on Barry on ESPN radio yesterday morning. The NBA released a statement saying that it should have been a foul. Even Phil Jackson and Derek Fisher said it was a foul.

I know all about how the ball grazed the rim a few seconds earlier and the shot clock should have been reset. You are right, this was also a bad call. This is just the tip of the iceberg, though. If you go back and watch the game there are countless calls that are obviously inconsistent and just plain wrong.

To be inconsistent and wrong so often means that the outcomes of the games are being heavily influenced by the officiating.

I am not comfortable with this, because it makes me think that the rules are not being enforced fairly.

The NBA is hungry for a return to the glory days of a Magic-Bird (Celtics-Lakers) era, or a Jordan era. This is when there growth, popularity, and pocketbooks were off the charts.

I think the NBA is getting sloppy in its agenda and people are noticing.

Two wrongs don't make a right, and besides who said it is just 2 wrongs. There are a plethora(not of pinattas) on both side but you have to be specific if you are gonna say that it is evenly awful. It is not possible to make an even amount of mistakes that cancel eachother out, so one side will get an advantage each game. You cannot throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Once again, its not that there are mistakes, but the gross volume of mistakes.

Jim Klatt

You have said it much more eloquently than I could have. I oughta close this thread purely on the post of the thread being made.

Your assessment is spot on.

Thank you sir.

One final thing that I think really shows Stern's true colors is this.

It has been a hot topic of debate whether or not to institute instant replay to make sure that they get the right call. You know what David Stern's response to that is? He doesn't want to slow down the game for the fans' sake.

This guy would choose the fans entertainment experience over making sure the right call is made. I think it pretty much sums it up right there.

We are drifitng into WWF territory, folks.

I think it's a case of the "make-up call". I see this all the time in the NFL too -

the ref will totally miss a call...and a few plays later he makes an equally ridiculous call on the other team to make up for the last bad call.

I think the refs saw that they blew the call on Fisher's shot hitting the rim, and so they made up for that by not calling a foul on that last shot by Barry.

Too bad it was at the very end of the game, so it's the last thing everyone saw and it's fresh on our minds. I think that's why the NFL uses the "booth review" now, because it's those last plays in the waning minutes that really have our attention, and they want to make sure they get the calls right.

Yeah, that is absurd. The NHL and NFL use it and while there are still some calls thats aren't made correct about 95% are.

The NBA should just shorten games to two minutes in length and have one player from each team take free throws. That's what the game has become.

Yeah, me too, the NHL is equally bad for this and I can't stand it, that's my most hated thing when refs do that.
