FCP won't "let go" of text

When I do a bunch of subtitles, sometimes FCP seems to edit both the one I'm working on and the previous one. Is there something I have to click to have it leave the previous one alone? I'd rather not start with the default each time, as I'd have to reset color, size, etc.

Let's say my 2 titles are Dog and Cat.

I type and place Dog, then move ahead in my timeline, click somewhere else in the timeline to deselect the first title, and edit title in the viewer to say Cat and place it.

Sometimes I look back and BOTH say Dog. Can't figure out the pattern in what I'm doing. Any suggestions?

It does that because essentially you are still editing the previous text. Although you select somewhere else in the timeline, you are leaving your text up in the viewer, so when you go in and edit it, FCP is thinking that you are trying to make the changes to what you just wrote. So if you don't want to have to start over and re-do font, color, size, length or whatever, just copy the previous text, paste it where your new text is supposed to be, double click it so that it appears in the viewer, and then you can edit the text and your previous text will remain the same.

You have to DOUBLE CLICK the clip to open it in the Viewer. That's all.

I find in my classes I teach a very common problem is that users will work on clips in the Viewer with nothing changing in the Timeline window. They open the original clip from the Bin, not thinking they forgot to double click the copy in the Timeline window.

Working with multiple text clips also has the common mistake of folks not Double Clicking the new text clip to open it in the Viewer. It's just part of editing disipline.

Yup. Double-clicking was the answer. Of course, I wish FCP would just forget about the previous clip once it's placed and deselected.

LoL I do this all the time when using 3 Way CC and other filters. Undo is my friend.
