NAB 2019 rumors (and releases)

There are more versatile, more powerful, cheaper and higher end lights out there, but this one was my personal favorite of the show.

The aladdin light matts have rings that allow users to stitch them together making huge light boxes and soft sources.

Wow, impressive. Wonder what the output was, it doesn't even look powered up in this image?

It is off. This was at the end of the show and i was kind of circling back looking trying to catch booths i hadn’t looked at yet.

The cool thing about this, is you can tuck this into a very small room and have a huge soft source. Previously this would require hot lights and more space to make a book light or something, which would slow cook the subject/s and crew. And the kino flo options are comparatively fragile and heavy.

The website says 2500lux at 2meters (6’6”) per mat.

So even if It is rated is less powerful than some other light, the stichting of 4 or 9 or 16 of these, creates a good amount of power evenly across the entire size of the light source. So the “potency” is pretty nice. And uniformity is excellent!

Falcon Eyes has their RX-120TDX light that I really like the look at to do the same sort of thing. 600W for $2000. 2 for $4k and 1200w is pretty sweet

Reminds me of the Kino Wall'O'Light that I loved

Did anyone mention the Mole 20K LED fresnel?
Brilliant design and can plug into household power (it has two leads which you plug into separate circuits).

Moles were impressive! Probably underrated to owner operators, but very nice looking options with classic industry standard designs.

I saw a banner or booth signage with Convergent on there. I didn’t stop by, as i was looking for the Fton lens booth and never made my way back unfortunetaly. But Convergent was there.

Their website does show they are selling Prores Raw support, and currently running a sale.

What’s with the bullish-t prank posts? There’s plenty of people who come to these forums for real info and who will be confused and then pissed off to be led astray by misinformation about companies that were NOT at NAB and silky stretched on frames that are diffusion, not lights themselves. A lot of people can’t get to Las Vegas and depend on resources like DVXuser to get real information. This is a place for professionals.

Here’s the 3’x3’ version showing the LEDs more clearly, new version is 6.5’x6.5’?

Mitch, you might want to take a closer look at the frame on the left. You also might want to apologise to James.

I had to look twice too BTW..

That picture was taken at Zylight booth, they are the US distributor of Aladdin products. And the silky stretched on frames is indeed a larger version of the Aladdin Fabric-Lite.

I didn't see any coverage of Gimbals, and very few dolly/sliders from the regular sites like NFS, Cinema5D, redshark, etc... Were there no new systems or firmwares introduced? Only thing I saw something about was the emotimo Dana dolly... So if someone saw something new, or has any links, please share some info.

I thought the Mole 20k looked super impressive, I've seen their 10k and it's impressive too. They're a bit tricky to place though. At $18,000 for the 10k and $40,000 for the 20k, the actual need to run them off house-power seems highly unlikely on the productions that will actually be able to afford to use them.

At which point, what are you actually gaining from them? A real 10k or 20k would be vastly cheaper to rent, and if you've got a generator there anyway - the power's not really the issue.

On the lens front, i wasn’t expecting much, but was pretty blown away by the options now.

A new company FOTON made a 25-300mm T2.8 PL mount zoom:

I beleieve they will also be at Cinegear in Los Angeles showing this lens there. Foton is a US based company that is striving to make lenses that fill the gaps. They seem like a company that is willing to take some chances and give users new zoom ranges. They may be a company that will really pay attention to what people are asking for. Definitely reach out to them if you get a chance.

The Canon Sumire primes are looking so very promising. Very modern and well behaved sharpness all the way into T2. The softness at T1.3 is very controlled, and usuable. Fine hallationnon small objects, but fine details are preserved. The coatings seem less extreme, and it help with punchy digital cameras, yet it doesn’t lose that 3D snap in the sharpness. Fdtimes did a much better and more detailed report: https://www.fdtimes.com/2019/04/03/sumire-prime/

Another new company, Spirit Labs, released a set of cine primes, if anyone is interested in seeing what alternative compnaies are available. Keep an eye out for them at cinegear this year. I believe they are the only brand using purple, and a nice departure from the “cinema” branding color palette. Good for shooters that want to signal to their clients their personality.

I did see the 3 lens turret adapter. A man was running around with it. Seemed a great choice for monopod type shooting. But for me, it was a little front heavy.

With all of the other lenses out on the floor, i feel these were some of the more quiet entries. Obviously Atlas has been getting a lot of buzz, and well deserved. A few colleagues were talking about cooke anamorphics. And as much as I wanted to, i never did hang out at Leica. I think Eric ans Matt did a great job of finding exciting products. Few people get to focus their energy like that.

There were a ton of gimbals at the show. Mostly by less known companies. There were some interesting configurations. One of them had a telescoping post.

Sliders i didn’t pay attention to. But there were definitely quite a few of them. there were also a few larger mechanized setups that looked like they woild be great for studio use. looked like a mechanized replacement for a camera operator.

There was a tricycle with a jib setup like a “russian arm” situation:

I could figure out the name of the company if anyone is interested.

On the editing fronts, of course, the Avid announcement was pretty exciting.

But also, at a small booth in the far reaches of the central hall, Luma Touch was showing their app. It is a $20 purchase as of now, but looks promising. I will purchase it soon. Curious if anyone else has compared it to apple and adode mobile editors.

I think the household power aspect is not really the main selling point, more like a nice footnote. 20K's are hot and cantankerous (I've had one catch fire on set) and being able to take advantage of the spread and intensity of that unit coupled with the fresnel quality without the drawbacks will be great for productions that need such a thing (sun source for large interior set on stage). There is a push from the studios here to move to LED's as the electricity and air conditioning savings are not insignificant line items, so this dovetails.
