NAB 2019 rumors (and releases)

Mitch and the like can provide you much more information than I can, but it's understood and common to do what you're describing. Companies do finalize features months in advance, but they also definitely wait and see what others do (if they don't already know what they will be doing).

And of course the cameras are usually more capable of what they may initially offer, so they can always - at a later time - offer more (paid or free) if human life allows them to.

And I want to know what that Sony camera is...a new beginning sounds like 8K!

Their are no sales on the actual floor, and mostly the gear is being announced and not ready to ship (at least pro cinema cameras). I think a large part of it nowadays is that companies use NAB to ballpark the feature-set and target price, i.e. they can see if a competitor completely undercuts them or revolutionize the market. Thus, by waiting they keep some leeway to change the price or add new features (mostly software/firmware). I mean, I don't think they go back to the drawing board and re-design their stuff, but more a sort of "can we ask them to pay for upgrade if they want prores, or 4K 60 fps RAW, etc? Or should we include it for free ?". I would like to hear from someone like Mitch what the general approach is from the various companies he worked for, if it is all finalized month before what the price and specs are or if they look for some sort of input.

All over the place. I’ve been involved with stuff that’s so locked down we couldn’t change the color of the box it would ship in. But other products were presented knowing full well they were only concepts and we wanted to gauge reaction. Some were in development for two years with everything targeted to the NAB launch, and others were whipped up literally the week prior. My favorite was the idea we came up with on the Friday before the show. The booth was already being setup and new art had to be created to cover a wall. That one turned into a very successful product.

I won’t tell you what any of these were for.

I assume you hold conversations with the major resellers/rental houses on new products. An individual user would have to go through those whenever the further details become available.

FWIW, scanning the retailers for several months gives a few hints that might or might not come up at the NAB.

PS. That Sony looks like it's from the FS-7 family.

Thanks for the answer! Any trends you've seen in it being more "let's lock it down before NAB" or "we need to check reactions first at NAB"?

^^ Also what I’m worried about for the EVA1. If they cut the fs7 weight, up the codecs and frame rates, add a few other things, etc it wouldn’t be hard to out spec the camera.

I’m glad the EVA1 since added 4k60p 10-bit thought as that helps extend its value.

Sony needs to have AF, at least, with the native glass. They already have it on their $900 camera.

Codec-wise, XOCN is good enough.

For being a new beginning, that looks a lot like an FS7 MKII?

Maybe a new sensor? That one has been kicking on in different versions since the FS700 in 2012.

Hopefully we see some nicer out-of-the-box colour, and 4K120p continuous. Those are the two things that I've said it would take for me to to finally upgrade from my FS700, and the UMP G2 was the first to finally deliver, at least on paper. Hopefully now there's a whole flood of options to follow (and if there is, boy will I be glad I didn't jump on a C200 or EVA1!).

When Sony puts Venice+ color, AI AF, True 4K (6K or more), and more (high quality) slomo options, would expect that to make some waves (FF is possible too- can always crop to S35). A new ultra-efficient codec would be icing on the cake (especially if 8K is provided). Decent IBIS would be nice too.

Some real info about the A7S III would be appreciated! :)

I saw Panasonic has an announcement April 7 (I think it was confirmed, not rumored). No idea what though. Given timelines of other products, gonna guess its just a camcorder and nothing to do with low/mid range cinema line or lumix. Suppose it could maybe be high-end cinema line related.

Sharp people are nice. I was shooting a small thing for a neighbor company and they asked if i want to shoot the rest of the project in 8K. I thought they were joking at first, but they were genuinely offering.

That's impressively generous of them :)
