Nab 2016

I would imagine a combination of dolly and jib shots...it seems possible to move the camera in all 4 directions.

Where did you hear about this?

I've been seeing rumors posted of various forums about a new ARRI sensor, with dubious origins, for a while now. They're in a tough position, the technology they need to achieve their image standards isn't quite there yet. Sony's in the same position though, they haven't replaced the F55/F65 either. I think there'll have to be some sort of technological paragdim shift for S35 sensors to achieve the 4K/DR balance. It's not in their interest to accounce anything that isn't ready though, they wouldn't want to cannibalize XT sales.

NAB 2016???
You'd think that by now we'd have learned NEVER to underestimate BMD . . . estimated delivery, July.

Maybe AJA is trying to make a comeback after their first camera project maybe didn't go as planned.

I really doubt they try again. They jumped the gun, chose the wrong sensor, and nobody wants the camera. They don't even have the same goodwill that BM has with their lineup of cameras, they just have that single failure. I think their concept will be more common in 5 years, when a great 4K sensor will be more readily available and have much less problems.

I don't think they would either but who knows.

The CION looked really good at one point but I thought they made a few other mistakes (besides the sensor choice) as well.

You can't offer a PL mount-only model for your first camera. I get it....it's for professionals, but professionals are not going to dump their Alexa for your CION right away. EF-mount dominates. Blackmagic would never have survived if they offered only PL-mount cameras. And the PL/EF mount AJA offered was just another expense ($700).

Propriety media...too expensive for your first camera. (It's not the mid-2000s and you're not RED.)

You already have thousands of people with their own SSDs...DO THAT...make it work. They recently released the AJA to CFAST adapter - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=aja+CFAST&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&sts=ma&Top+Nav-Search= - but why did that take so long?

This on top of no real monitoring (another expense) on top of no internal RAW recording (another expense) on top of their original $10K price tag was not ideal.

A few Vimeo samples with unpleasant footage and the camera was dead-on-arrival.

[This is all my opinion of course and the camera could be hugely popular and I'm just wrong, but I've actually never seen one used anywhere.]

Also, just wanted to mention that the above doesn't mean it can't produce beautiful images. Just saying.

Since that message, some of the major ones:

Canon 1DX Mark II
Varicam LT
Kinefinity 5K and 6K Terra
Hasselblad H6D
Lytro Cinema

Anything else?

I read it the way that there will be new, surprising announcements during the show itself, not before.

I'm going to wager the buzz at NAB 2016 in general is going to largely be around HDR and 360 VR. It will be around content development and gear in both areas. For established DPs it will be around the high end lenses, Varicam LT, some new filters and new lighting tech. Not much else I guess.

3DR knocked it out of the park with their Solo Drone at NAB last year and BM again managed to steal mindshare from almost everyone but I think BM has run out of their Blackmagic potion. I thought this last year though and was proven very wrong.

In the camera dept maybe Scarlet Weapon will create a cascade of interest beyond the existing RED crowd. Who knows Raven could take off with interest now that Canon has introduced this relatively inexpensive 18-80 EF mount Cine lens. Adding "Fool Control" makes this potential Raven/Canon Cine Lens a compelling package.

There will obviously be product announcements that come right out of left field that will make it interesting. All will be revealed by Monday morning.

Like some others, I'm hoping for some very excellent new products in LED lights, like a nice fresnel and generally much better color and brightness. The LED space is still developing very rapidly, so it seems as if this area is ripe for some new and exciting stuff coming out at NAB 2016... here's hoping!
