Nab 2016

... I think BM has run out of their Blackmagic potion. I thought this last year though and was proven very wrong...
Nah. You are wrong now about being wrong then. Because you were right then and not so right now. And two wrongs don't make a right. But three lefts do. And BMD is going around in circles, which is pretty close to bringing it to a dead end.

Also, just wanted to mention that the above doesn't mean it can't produce beautiful images. Just saying.

That it can... in the right hands. Most DPs using it would be those who can't afford the likes of Alexa/Red/CineAlta/Varicam, however. Most of those aren't going to be able to make great images with a Cion, because it's very unforgiving. I keep hoping that AJA will add a linear encoding option, because right now it's quite like working with slide film; the results are very beautiful... until you hit overexposure, at which point it's toast. On most modern cinema cameras, there's a nice and elegant logarithmic rolloff, but on the Cion, it's linear... which is similar to how the CineAlta family works, but the CineAlta line has sensors with considerably wider dynamic range, and 16-bit rather than 12-bit encoding.

I suspect that going the 16-bit route would have put the Cion well beyond its target price, but at least log encoding would make it a LOT easier to use, especially outdoors.

Mine is going to be relegated primarily to studio duty shortly -- i.e. once my Scarlet-W arrives.

There's more to come.

But I will also note that three significant products have been either cancelled or delayed since I posted that last note. They won't be seen at this NAB. Maybe IBC, maybe who knows?

Are you allowed to say anything about their price ranges, without mentioning the manufacturers?

The Big Cannon :wink :wink is delayed until IBC ....

A certain well known big Japanese manufacturer was supposed to have a big reveal of one of their flagship products at NAB 2016, but at the last moment it was delayed until IBC 20-16. It will be something quite special come September. The wait is worth it.

So, that was - I assume - C500 MKII.

And, since the 8K camera will be there, albeit as a prototype, C500MKII was something else.

Any chance we will see a CD EVF sometime in the near future? Like the Gratical Eye but half the price... ;)
