My new rig.

Interesting.... On the Gh2 with the teleconverter in the camera you wouldn't loose those stops but you'd have to hang the sink on the back to counterbalance this....

But can you bench press it?

But can you curl it?

but can you deadlift it?

But can you dig it?

I can.

Let me know how that works, I have been curious about wider B4 lenses. Make sure you use the 2x extender or the AbelCine HDx2 converter

By the way, how much weight is too much for the base of the camera to support; where you screws are in the base of the camera? Can the AF-100 camera actually hold 17lbs safely? I'm curious cause my own rig weighs in at 12lbs - of course not ALL of that weight would be pulling down on those base screws.

I am not sure, but this rig I pretty well balanced. Also the lens is supported by a chroiszel lens support and from the mattebox. My concern was from the Zacuto Zeddie Wedgie, but that is Incredibly stable. With this size rig I was very concerned about inertia, but that so far has not been a problem. What I would like to see is Panasonic or a 3rd party make a plate for the underneath side of the camera. The plastic under- belly concerns me a little.

It is an HJ17ex7.7B HDXS, I have been using this on my HDX900. It has a B4 to FD, FD to 4/3 mount. You need to use the 2x extender to avoid vignetting and you lose 2 stops, but it is a F3.8 all the way through.
I believe I read Mitch Gross at AbelCine are working on a powering solution for the zoom rocker.

Can you elaborate on what you see as the benefits between this rig and your HDX900 with the same lens?

Sure, let's look at cost, I do not like to loose clients due to budget, but I also do not give away my gear to get a job.
My HDX900, costs a lot more to take out (purchase price, head ware, tape stock, etc.). There are a few of my new clients that want to shoot with my 7D(smaller budgets).
I am not opposed to the 7D, but the the ergonomics, compression, lack of zoom lenses (that hold focus through the zoom range) make it difficult for me
to work efficiently(did I mention crappy compression?). I am trying to ween my clients away from the DSLR's and go to this camera (AF100) if they need/want 35mm DOF (yes, I know it is not exactly the same as a 7D/5D).

Using my high end zoom lens allows me to interchange one of the most expensive pieces of gear I own (about $17K about 4 years ago), and gives it a bit more life. The images look great, I record my master to a NanoFlash and use tape/SD cards for archive/emergencies.
The Canon lens allows me to use my follow focus, mattebox, lens support, etc. (all of which I used on my Aaton XTR Prod). for a few more years.

Slightly off subject, but I bought this AF100 for a dozen jobs I have booked in Jan/Feb.(remember, I am trying to stop using my 7d when possible). This camera will long be paid off by this, then off to another camera purchase. I am finding that I am better off buying the best accessories I can afford to go camera to camera. Cameras are now better and cheaper. I hope my days of buying a $45K rig will be over...maybe.

I hope this answers your question. Take care.

So am I way off by thinking that the light loss due to the lens is about the same as using hvx with dof adapter? Im assuming your losing sharpness with the adapters in all. Can you elaborate the difference. im just curious as too the benefits of your rig.

No,
The light loss could be problematic, but cameras have gotten so clean I do not mind going to 9 or even 12db. So it hasn't been a problem yet. I often do not have the time to change out lenses to get a shot, so using my Canon zoom will be a great benefit.

What I would to see as I said before is a better is a battery solution.
I use a Nanoflash, I would like to see SWIT make a battery like the EX1/EX3 so I get rid of the backside of the rig and use 1 battery for both, will see.

I haven't used a lens adapter on a HVX200, so I couldn't comment on sharpness. I need to use the 2x extender on the zoom to avoid vignetting, hence the light loss. So far sharpness has been excellent.

could you post some video you've shot with this lens on Vimeo sometime? I'd really be interested in seeing how it looks.

Interesting stuff, James. I'd be very, very curious to see that footage as well.
I have a beautiful B4 wide-angle HD zoom I would love to use on my AF100. I can't imagine it would be usable, but one can dream...

By the way, I've torn up the handle on my HDX twice using noga arms to mount monitors on it. I finally had to buy a alloy handle from 16X9 to fix that issue for good.
I can't imagine the handle on the AF is any stonger that the HDX. I hope a third party vendor will come out with some options for that.

lack of a prism block should be corrected optically. otherwise the different spectral alignement of the 3 sensor lens can result in aberrations.

So far so good with my HDX handle, I usually leave the arms on. I was thinking about the VF Gadgets alloy handle (I assume you have that one).
I imagine VF Gadget or a third party will have something soon.
As far as optically correcting the lens, such as with AbelCine's B4 to PL, I cannot justify the cost at this time (I believe the cost is list $5500, which is more than my camera). I wish I kept my Century B4 to PL I had for my Aaton, oh well.

With the 2X extender, the DOF is essentially identical with 2x extender on AF100 as it is without the extender on the HDX900. It is the same image blown up to twice the size (4x the area). Do you find the AF100 is more than 2 stops more sensitive than the HDX? Or do you just see it as a budget version of the HDX with some added limitations to reduce costs for some clients?
