Who's your favorite film critic and why?

Lately I've really enjoyed reading movie reviews. As long as there aren't any spoilers in the review it can deepen my appreciation for a film instead of viewing it cold. This can go both ways of course... some flicks are better viewed knowing nothing.

My biggest complaint with some reviews is they read like a clawing attempt at notoriety... meandering prose as if they're trying to turn the review itself into a competing art form.

The older I get the more I appreciate the "At the Movies" review show... which started with Siskel and Ebert. Short, intelligent analysis seems hard to come by, and I think there's a few DVXuser members which are more suited to publishing reviews then most reviewers.

I've been finding Roeper to be fairly reliable for my taste in films... So do you have any go-to guys?

myself, he's always right!

Kidding aside, I don't mind Ebert though sometimes his logic and reason for hating movies seems inconsistent.

Usually, I like anyone on rottentomatoes who agrees with me and has an elequint way of expressing how I felt.

I don't really have one critic, but there's a site, with multiple contributors, that I love:

http://www.alternatetakes.co.uk/

Such a great site. What they do is write a simple (spoiler-free) review, which is meant to be read before you see the film. And after you've seen it, you can read the "alternate take" review, which is a much much more in depth analysis of the film.

ebert, he just seen so much and really take you there with out ruining it even if he loves or hates it.

Ebert. Unpretentious critic who knows what he's talking about. Simple, personal analysis in films, but never redundant or excessively "lyrical".

I like Ebert and Roper the most as their analysis isn't overblown. It gets right to the point. I don't always agree with them but I can understand their view.

The worst are the ones on EW and CNN. Their analysis is one of two things; either a spoiler-full point by point breakdown of the film or an exercise in English Lit. They are horrible to read.

I didnt give Ebert too much thought until I picked up his book Your Movie Sucks. I dont agree with every single one of this reviews, but he makes good points. Also, the Rob Schneider story is awesome.
