Hey all, this is a music video I directed for the Dallas-based band The O's. Any comments/criticisms are appreciated. Enjoy!

Shot on the Canon 7D with Sigma 30mm f/1.4 and Canon 14mm f/2.8L.

Excellent! That had to be some pretty serious time invested in AE (or Motion). Loved the video so much I just got their album off iTunes...

Thanks, everybody! All the post work was done in After Effects, which was quite the slog on my old MBP.

@ikander, the shot at 3:09 was 4 different shots seamed together. The first shot was John, the singer, standing on the dolly platform along with the camera. We called that the Spike Lee Rig. That shot ended with the debris falling on his head, which we used as the edit point for the next shot -- John just holding the camera out in front of him and falling back onto the padded carpet. (We tried to build a Snorricam-type rig but it didn't work). That shot was seamed with another Spike Lee Rig shot through a pre-cut carpet "down" (back) to the "floor" (a wall). The jolt of the impact was used as the final edit point to a simple shot of John falling back on the floor.

@Alex H, thanks for supporting them! If you ever get over here to TX you should catch them live, they're fantastic and hilarious.

That was very nicely done, cinematography and production values were simply top notch. Those transitions were very creative and well executed, great stuff Niebs.

Thought the video was great and something I have never seen before, really awesome. The only thing I didn't like was the lighting, would have liked to see some color in there ( would have created more mood ). Overall though 9/10 Excellent project!

Think about "O Brother, Where Art Thou?". Very similar color treatment, and it works. It gives the piece a rustic, earthy, old-fashioned feel. It's not quite sepia-toned, but evokes that kind of spirit (think old-timey photo huts at amusement parks, but not nearly as corny). And considering how much of a role dirt/dust plays in this music video, he's kept the color scheme dirty and dusty.

May I ask how you did those transitions between the rooms and how you seamed together the dolly scene at 3:09? It all looks very smooth. I enjoyed the video.

Cool! That's definitely what we were going for with the color treatment, action and setting, which were all informed by the style of the music.

Thanks for the feedback, vision_filmz, were you looking for a cooler tone for contrast, more saturation overall or something else? I've heard one reaction that really wanted a vibrant red something in there, so you're not alone in your thoughts. I'm analyzing my decisions here in prep for the next thing, it's a battle making strong choices subtly.

@steakly, The rooms are seamed together with what are basically wipes. The transitions occur when the barrier walls pass by the camera. We just shot the band in room 1 with a camera move to (an empty) room 2. Then we'd rewind and shoot (an empty) room 1 with a camera move to a band-occupied room 2. Put it all together and you've got the same people all over the place! In this case these rooms are actually contiguous, but it doesn't really matter with the technique.

The seams starting at 3:09 were all dissolves. We designed moments of abrupt motion at those transition points to help mask the dissolves: Transition on him shaking his head, transition when he collides with the carpet and then another when he slams into the floor. Hope that makes sense, glad you enjoyed it!

I talked to the O's a couple times about shooting something, but there was mucho alcohol involved. Love those guys, great job on the video. (I live right by the Libertine and have caught them there and elsewhere).

Halfway through I thought "great choice on the muted color palette"; I can see you desire for some red, but it seems like that would need to be almost a "character" element, the way it could jump out. Doubt you need it, there's plenty going on.

So... how did you do the cracks? Some of them look like they could be tracked still art, but there's that ceiling where some pieces fall out... and, where'd you find the house for the location? Perfect catch.

Jesus, I am completely blown away. This is really top top work here. Visual effects were excellent. I LOVE the very minimal set design and color, it really compliments the song. I wish i knew how to achieve half of the effects you did masterfully in this clip. Thank you for sharing.

Sounds about right. They're playing at Club Dada next Friday. You should go, maybe we'll bump into each other. You're right on with the cracks -- They're real photos of drywall/sidewalks tracked in and revealed with a mask. The ceiling is with particles in AE/Cinema 4D.

We found the house through a friend of a friend, got really lucky on that, it's really the star I think.

Thanks for the kind words, everybody!

Gotta say, I really dig the rest of the album, too. Made my work day the other day so much more tolerable.
