Mr. Leslie

Score went ok. We had a nice set up, it's super naturalistic. We used wine glasses ;)

It sounds nice.

I'm exporting and it's peeing me off!!!

I hope the time is extended because of the late upload details.

Thanks guys! Chris, no the actual film won't look like that, it's in colour. Which i'll now see whether it was a good or bad decision haha.

Jason, was that really necessary??? I think I just had a heart attack. :|

SPOILER REVIEW:

The good: I like the simplicity of the whole thing. Simple location, simple lighting. Clean table with a tape recorder. Very effective. The delivery of lines and acting was great. And those are some of the most important things.

The not as good: The audio was a little echoey. I know they're in a large hollow room, but it's a little TOO echoey. I'm not a fan of the shots with the interrogator on the left of the screen looking left. A lot of dead space. And it's peculiar to me too because everyone is looking left to speak in the interrogation room. The dance / club scene was a little long. Could have been cut in half.

I really enjoyed this. Very nice.

Spoiler below, highlight text:

Audio issues, echo. Get that mic as close as possible.

nice high contrast lighting, sets the mood.

Some of your out door shots needed more lighting.

I personally love the camera attached to the character shots when they're drunk style.

I'm glad you used some flashbacks as the just sitting around the table was killing the pace. I think there's something wrong with your shutter speed...oh wait they're in the club. Just teasing or taking the piss as y'all would say. Nice stylistic choice, it works.

The actors weren't quite age appropriate to be cops in my opinion. I think some sound effects on the abuse would work well. Overall solid entry.

Good film. The shot of the officer was a little distracting, because of the framing and crossing the line, but I thought other than that you had some pretty good camera angles in here. The acting was good I thought as well. The punch definitely needs to be polished a little and a sound effect added and you may cut a little of the story and stick to the meat of it, but other than that a very nice effort.

I'm flattered you've all took the time to give me some brilliant feedback.

Everything you've said makes complete sense. The sound issues everyone is picking up on? I didn't have time to sync and sort all the external sound we recorded haha, believe it or not that's all in-camera sound which explains why it's so terrible!

The lighting outside we didn't have any lights to use! Apart from a phone light and car headlights, so I agree. You'll notice jacking the iso up also really grained the shots too :/

Marlon, thanks for the feedback man! I agree there are a lot of places for sound effects to be added. I'm a guy heavy on sound, so It really hurt me to upload the film in this state, but I just wanted to enter. The choice for me was either, score or foley at the time. We only managed to do a bit of score in my garage.

Ah well, hope you's enjoyed it! :D

This is a really good effort. However, there are some things you need to work on.
During the interview you were switching the camera from side to side (crossing the line) and it was very distracting, as was having the cop on the left talking off screen. Too much black space.

Spoiler:

Also I dont think the police really do suspect interviews in dark rooms while beating up the suspect as it will almost always lead to the case being dismissed.

I liked the club scenes but they felt a bit isolated without anyone else in the background.

Still this was very well done. You did well.

The shot with the cop way over on the left bothered me, too. It was as if you designed it for the titles, then kept using it for the rest of the film. I think the technical issues already discussed hurt your film badly. It was tough to work around them and get into the story – which was pretty interesting.
Spoiler:
You’ve played a trick on the audience by showing them a flashback that wasn’t accurate. They blasted Hitchcock for it in Stage Fright and I still think it’s a cheat – unless you are showing various characters’ points of view to illustrate different takes on the same subject or event.

Really good effort for your first fest, a pretty decent film, good work. You almost pulled off the echoey sound had it been a bit less echoey. But as is, I had a hard time understanding the dialogue. That said, the dialogue was well written and the acting was pretty straight on. I don't mean to be an ageist, but it's hard to buy 3 young guys in these roles. The cop would have been better had he been in his late 20's or 30's. But that's just casting. I think what you accomplished overall was pretty polished and i hope to see you in the next fest for sure.

Yeah, I'm taking all your comments on board. My one big mistake was I didn't have a shotlist. I sorted so much stuff in such a short time I couldn't fit a shot list in there everything we came up with was on the day.

The police officer shot was intentional as you're meant to feel isolated with a huge block of space there. It just happened to be a good place to slot the title.

This interview isn't meant to be your classic police interview, it's behind closed doors in a dank dirty room. That's why when they exit to the corridor there aren't any police officers walking about. They're trying to crack him for info, in a crooked way, illustrating their character.

Next fest I'll try harder and it'll be less simple and isolated. I'm gonna do a drama on a boxer hopefully the next fest I can incorporate that in there. Otherwise I'll do that between fests :)

Appreciate the feed back guys :D

Haven't read the other posts yet...

Good job story wise, visually with the one shot of the cop towards the beginning...with all that black....seemed like weird framing...dunno

Nice cop story though!

Thanks for sharing

Good work on your first fest! (WAY better then my first) Yes, there's a lot to work on, but you have the general idea and I'm looking forward to your next film. Crossing the line really throws the viewer(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/180_degree_rule) try not to do that.

Give yourself plenty of time to organize...storyboard and get that shot list together. Try to envision the edit and any potential holes before you shoot so you can be sure to get all the coverage and cut-aways you might need. Don't forget to spend time on the sound design and score, it's very important.

You have the skills, just refine them and keep making films!

I won't nitpick on the technical stuff as that's been covered. I guessed it was the in camera mic though. :)

First fest? Way to go! Probably better than my first entry.
The plus of this was the acting. I thought you did a pretty good job. Editing could really help this, you need to trim the fat a bit to get at it.
I really can't wait to see what you do next fest. Be sure to jump back in and take what you've learned here.
Great first entry.
