Moving to the GH4 from Canon

Cool! I'm certain that is the one I was looking at. I think I had found a review from a guy that tested it out and his images and crops zoomed in looked excellent. I too bought a cheap EF to M43 adapter and it works great. Also got that Kipon with Iris, and it is very hand too. Too bad METABONES is foot dragging here - happy to spend on thier great product, but I want to start shooting NOW, not 6 months or a year from now. :(

Amen to that.

Camera arrived and I've had it for an hour. Battery was half-charged, so I set it up based on some Vimeo/YT videos and shot some tests in my messy office.

I have to shoot some interviews tonight at a Rodeo and some b-roll, so that will be my big test. Just gotta stop and pick up an extra battery for tonight. I ordered 6 batteries, but they won't be here until next Tuesday.

As I expected, none of my cheap Transcend 20MB/s cards work at 4k or 96 fps (they work fine at 1080/30p 100mbs). Both my SanDisk Extreme Pro U1 95MB/s cards work great. And surprisingly, my cheap Micro Center 45 MB/s cards also work great. The Lumix 12-35mm lens IS is amazing, the best IS I have seen on a lens. And I'm loving the zebra stripes. Now I can keep my cheap $150 7-inch portable HDMI monitor.

Strange that the 4k and 96fps modes don't work even though the 1080/30P 100mbps does since they're all the exact same bitrate (100mbps). What sort of error message do you get when shooting in 96fps?

Something about the card not being fast enough. I sold them an hour ago to a colleague at work who has a T3i and has gone home for the weekend, or I'd put one back in and get the exact error from the screen.

BestBuy doesn't carry batteries for the GH line, so I had to drive across town to our "camera shoppe" and get one for $89 (holy moly!).

One negative on the GHx is that the battery grip only holds 1 battery. So you have to take it off the camera to change the internal battery. With the grip on my Canon, both batteries are in a tray that slides out the side. So I don't even have to take it off my tripod or rig to change both batteries.

Though you could also say it's a positive because you don't have to power down the GH4 to swap batteries since the body has a battery as well, whereas the Canon is solely powered by the grip.

With the runtime you get with the GH4's batteries, you can shoot for a full day on 2 batteries. Swap out the grip's battery once when it switches over to the body's battery and you can shoot well into the next day.

Got my gh4 and ordered the lumix 12-35 lens. While returning the sigma 19mm. I plan to keep my 70D. I don't use 4k but am using the gh4 4k and downres to get a richer imagery.

Packages starting to arrive from overseas... Got my C-mount adapter, FD adapter and a set of M43 macro tubes. No speedbooster yet...

Cool. Seriously, looking forward to your review of the Focal reducer you bought. I'm so ready to pull the trigger on that.

One thing I note: two of my EF lenses do NOT fit in my adapter that has the aperture on it. :( The 10-22mm and the kit 35-250 zoom. They are too deep it seems. But they fit fine in the basic adapter. I worry that getting a speedbooster/focal reducer will be worthless for those lenses and only work for the other 3 :(

I got rid of all my Canon lenses. All I have now are the two Panasonic AF lenses and a gaggle of manual lenses with EF adapters. So far, they're all working great on the GH4.

In fact, I just used my EF macro tubes and Pentax 28mm lens to shoot some EXTREME closeups for a project at work.

My FD to M43 adapter with a couple FD lenses I grabbed off eBay also works great. My only disappointment so far is the CCTV lens I tried. I couldn't focus on anything. I'll have to try some other c-mount lenses.

Showed up last week and would not work. I could put the EOS lens in, but it wouldn't screw into the body. After a half dozen emails with the seller, they shipped me a 4/3 version and not a Micro 4/3 version. I didn't know there was a difference.

I clearly ordered the Micro 4/3 from eBay. He shipped out a new one and sent me the tracking info. Looks like it will be here Monday or Tuesday of next week... I hope so, I have a 5-day shoot starting Wednesday that I have to travel for.

On another note... I am AMAZED, simply AMAZED at how long the batteries last. I shot 90 minutes of footage over 6 hours at a charity event on "half" of a battery. I put in a full battery and took 3 more with me, just in case, and only used up half of the first battery. Never needed the others. About 70% of what I shot was 4k/30p and the rest was 96p. And almost all of that was using the Lumix 12-35mm 2.8 lens. I did shoot a little bit with a 50mm F/1.4 EF lens with the dummy adapter.

And that was the OEM battery, not the original Panasonic battery.

4/3 doesn't sound right for our MICRO 4/3 camera mount??? I ordered one too now, but who knows what I will get. I'd read here one guy's was not snug, but he got a replacement that was snug.

Also discovered crappy $10 adapters ALMOST kinda work like focal reducers*: sucking in more light, widening view, but the glass is not high end get messy on edges. Maybe I'll post up some tests...
* I had one laying around from old days, and luck it happens to fit my new 12-35 lens

I shot a TV spot last week, about 2 hours with the camera on pretty much the whole time (shooting 34 minutes of 4k of footage) and didn't burn through 1/2 the battery. I find that absolutely amazing for a live view camera. The 5d3 would last all day shooting stills, but when shooting in live view, I could only get a couple hours before my battery was toast, sometimes less. The GH4 has GREAT battery life. I shot stills at an event after the video shoot on the same battery (a generic off Amazon BTW), still didn't run out of juice after 200 clicks. My 2 spares just sat in the bag...

New Speedbooster arrived while I was out last week shooting a music festival. It seems to fit just fine. I'm headed south for a week on an assignment, I'll give it a go and post some footage when I get back.
