FS7: Monitor thoughts

Here you go. A bit wider. The 7Q mount bracket is nice in that it can tilt forward or backwards. If I want it side facing, I just mount it on one of the side facing 15mm rods.

ANy further thoughts on monitors?

I had persuaded myself to buy an Odessey but had some worries..

Sending clean to the monitor

..does one get a tally light (even if not recording to ext HD)
..Audio levels meter?
..is the Ody working with the FS7 not via the raw route just HDMI out
-How is it handling HFR
-Are LUTs working
-Is the WFM showing b4 or after LUT

Having seen Genes images above Ive gone cold on the Ody again - any other thoughts! ?

I have observed that the DP7 OLED is actually more a bit better color than the Odyssye though perhaps if the Odyssey adds the proper controls- contrast , brightness and Sat it might be easier to get closer. The DP7 OLED perfectly matches my 17" monitor and the 7Q is not quite as precise. However its still pretty darn good and I love all the other tools it comes with so i'm quite happy with it. Also the Red peaking is very good - few false positives so you really can judge focus with it well. On a small monitor I actually find that more important than the color being perfect. Looking forward to the next firmware though.

i'll look into your other question s over the weekend ,. actually I haven't tested all those parameters & I guess I should.

Re waveform- It shows whatever your sending in. I've been putting DSI 1 ( no LuT in to one input and SDI 2 with :LUT in the other and the waveform reflects what enters.. Haven' needed to use the LUT that the Odyssey itself generates yet.

What was wrong with Gene's images. By the way I have a Berkey plate and I just am mounting it with a little Israeli arm and that seems to work fine. Using Olof's little adapter to screw into it.
Works fine. I have discovered that anything mounts more firmly if instead of a 1/4" screw going into a 1/4" socket, you take a 1/4" screw and go into a 3/8" sprocket with a cheap 1/4 to 3/8 adapter . Somehow its much firmer. That helps the monitor stay in place.

I have two monitors - Marshall V-LCD56MD and a Ikan D7W. Neither is perfect but I really like the exposure tools on the Ikan. Waveform, RGB parade and Vector scope.

My Marshall monitor also has Waveform monitoring and both have false colour.

Oss - what res is that monitor? I need at least 720p.

Im never bothered (much) about colour accuracy on a monitor - I judge colour by evaluating RGB histo/wfm.. not that the FS7 has one unless it is on an external monitor (unlike a $500 DSLR!)

Nothing wrong with his images, just the 7q looks to be the size of a dinner plate.. I much prefer the size of my DP6 but my DP6 is in the out tray as it doesnt have WFM or LUTs and is also broken!

Tally Light - We generate one when recording. Don't know what you expect when we're not recording. That would be an FS7 function. If you're in Rec Run then you'd see timecode roll below picture on our screen, so maybe that works for you.

Audio Meters - Yup, top right corner, outside picture.

Odyssey via HDMI - Yes, over HDMI:
Odyssey7Q+ will record 4K24p, UHD24p/25p/30p, 2K & HD 24p/25p/30p/50p/60p
Odyssey7Q will record 2K & HD 24p/25p/30p
Odyssey7 will record HD 24p/25p/30p

HFR - The camera will not output HFR over anything but RAW, so you would need the XDCA extension back and an Odyssey7Q or Odyssey7Q+ with the FS7/FS700 RAW Record Option. Then you could capture 4K60p and 2K240p, which is both faster and higher resolution than the camera can record internally.

LUTs - An improved color handling is to be released very shortly, and our new custom 3D-LUT implementation is due in April.

Wafeform & LUT - Currently it shows whatever is on screen, but with our custom 3D-LUT firmware release it will be switchable. In fact it will be implemented with a level of control and versatility unprecedented in the industry.

Mitch - sorry my post was a bit garbled esp about HDMI.

Im gonna start again... Im not buying the back box.

part one, monitoring..

Simply I want a monitor for me, with LUTon/off WFM and all that stuff that I need to make technical choices (the 7q) and I want to output to a directors monitor, ideally a clean lutted image, currently that would be via HDMI to my DP1x but in time I would hope to upgrade to a SDI directors monitor in the future

Would this setup work, at all frame rates/resses, modes?

One worry was 'tally/record' which is not put out with the clean feed (of course), so one of my concerns was knowing if I am rolling, I guess there are two solutions to this..
-view TC
-output a non clean feed from the camera (SDI2) and 'strip' back the on screen displays to show as little as possible, then I get my red dot when Im rolling

-part two monitoring/recording/making proxies

There are situations when I might want pro-res for fast turnaround or onset playback, particularly if one was recording 4k onboard.. and also the monitoring stuff outlined above.
Clearly that wont work because the doesnt feed out HFR.

So to do part two I would need the back unit.

Let us focus if part one works nicely...

Yes, you can do pretty much all of part one right now.

The current LUT implementation is limited. We have some pre-set LUTs and when you turn them on it effects all outputs, meaning the LUT is applied to the OLED, the analysis tools such as the waveform, and to the SDI and HDMI outputs. It is never recorded (baked in).

This is going to soon change. Scheduled for our April firmware update is custom 3D-LUT support. Create the LUTs in Resolve and import into the Odyssey. Then you can SEPARATELY choose how and where to apply the LUT. So you could have a LUTTED OLED image, imaging tools reading the LOG signal, and SDI/HDMI outputs showing a LUTted image. You can also choose whether or not you want the Tools (waveform, etc.) to appear in the output when selected to display on the OLED.

That sounds like a carefully constructed answer. As did your use of "most" two posts above .

It either works or it doesn't?

It is no poor reflection on CD if Sony doesn't put out good signal in certain modes - I had issues with fs700 and dp7 and hfr - but that was rental kit so I can't remember the details

Not trying to be evasive, just concise. Here's the long version.

FS7 can output numerous video formats at various frame rates. There are a couple the camera will output that the Odyssey7Q+will not accept. An example of this is UHD60p. The Odyssey can monitor UHD at 24p, 25p and 30p, but currently it is incapable of receiving and displaying UHD60p.

However if what you wish to do is simply use the Odyssey7Q+ as a monitor for most work, then the FS7's SDI outputs at 1080p60 will work no problem, or one could choose to downsample with the HDMI feed as well. The camera does not limit the video outputs to match the signals of the internal recording format.

So my point was that if you are using the Odyssey7Q+ strictly as a monitor, then you will always be able to monitor the image. It just may be "relegated" to an HD monitoring output if you chose to go to a higher frame rate.

So using it as a 1080 SDI monitor the o7q works in all modes. I think that is clear. Thank you.

"works' is a complex phrase - to me 'it works' is simple.. but with Sony and others it is not so clear..
LUTs on the FS7 - no work at HFR.. so IMO luts do not work.
FS700 and DP7 via SDI - no work at HFR.. to me FS700, SDI and DP7 do not work.
GoPro app and "protune' no work.. to me go pro app does not work

Stuff either works or not, and be working I mean in every possible mode.

To be fair, some of the examples you brought up concern the camera shutting off an output or function under a certain condition. It's not broken, it's just not designed to do the thing you want it to do.

The Odyssey7Q+ can see lots of different frame rates and resolutions. There are a very few frame rate / resolution combinations available on the FS7 that are not currently supported by the Odyssey7Q+, so you cannot select them for recording or direct monitoring. But because the FS7 allows one to monitor those combinations in other ways, the Odyssey then has you covered.

Of course there is 'works' and 'broken' - just Im used to robust equipment, my stills gear (Nikon) and my sound gear (Sound Devices) never ever ever spring an unexpected trap on me.. my Sony vid cams however seem to regularly leave me scratching my head in front of the director... which makes me look like an ar_se, and looking like an ar_se is not part of my business model :)

I get no 4k at HFR because it stresses the engine, but the 'random' stuff gets me down.

To be clear Mitch it is the camera that I don't trust, not the Ody.

Understood. Sony is not the only one, but the company certainly has mastered the ability to make one pause and say "What the?" when navigating the functions.

i am a little confused now....i do need the sony XDCA-FS7 to get 12bit raw out of the FS7....what do i get if i attach the 7q (or 7q+) to the FS7 directly? other then a monitor?
i keep checking the convergent website but don't see any mention of the XDCA-FS7....

You need the box for raw. Personally I would be after HDprores or nothing via SDi, I think the 7q+ does get a 4k feed via HDMI, Im not interested in HDMI :)

Really I just want an SDi monitor with LUTs and WFM, but then the 7q+ is actually one of the cheapest to do that and the recording would be handy if I ever got tied onto a job shooting with the Gh4 or A7s
