FS7: Monitor thoughts

You need the box for raw. Personally I would be after HDprores or nothing via SDi, I think the 7q+ does get a 4k feed via HDMI, Im not interested in HDMI :)

Really I just want an SDi monitor with LUTs and WFM, but then the 7q+ is actually one of the cheapest to do that and the recording would be handy if I ever got tied onto a job shooting with the Gh4 or A7s

thanks for that....i thought so...i am also really mostly looking for a monitor but the recording options are nice to have and (other then the media and codec upgrade option) seem to be more or less free....
so what does the 7q+ record straight from camera?
the shogun does have the extra resolution which might help with focus....i wonder what NAB might bring...

Continuing my meanderings.

Ive just hooked up my HDMI SmallHD and it is looking, well, a bit woozy, interlaced 360 shutter look, I dont like it one bit... Im fairly sure it is the o/p from the camera.

Im hoping to get a SDI monitor soon maybe DP5 or Transvideo.

Can users of SDI monitor re-assure me that the FS7 is giving out a signal worth watching?

Im probably going to have to set it up on a non clean signal so I get a record light.

Overall it is a shame to be looking to trade out the VF but with lack of functioning LUTs to give punch I'm having trouble focusing really (off-centre focus would of course help!)

Morgan - I've seen that same woozy look - on other small hdmi monitors. I believe it to be the 2-3 pulldown signal sent out of camera (when shooting 1920x1080 and using both sdi & hdmi outputs - this is the only option on camera.) I'm normally shooting 23.98fps - or occasionally 29.97.
And I do have a Panasonic BT-LH1850 sdi/hdmi monitor that I use for "client" monitor. If hdmi output is off, then whatever I feed it via sdi, isn't woozy and good. But - still struggling here with the lack of a non-playback lut on set. So....I'm still searching for the solution (and am intriqued as well by the CD 7Q+).

Yes its fine. Any step up from the Small HD 4" will be huge anyway. I had that for awhile and hated it. Likewise any step away from HDMI is like getting out of prison Sam.

Len - I have the dp6 - loads better than the dp4 - what monitor do you have ?

btw I usually shoot 25p

antother quirk - if you turn Sdi off the Wfm is lost in the hdmi out !

I have TV Logic 5.6 and for the FS7 got an Odyssey 7Q+.
The TV Logic has been great for years but doesn't have internal LUT's and only one input + the menu system & limited buttons means that its a pain to get to all the functions
The Odyssey is great with good color, though the Small HDPro7 OLED has a little more exact color.
However I much prefer the odysseys menus system & tools & of course its also a recorder.
Both can add LUT's in the monitor.
Odyssey has great red peaking for focus, good waveform , zebras (update is expected to improve) and false color) - easy touch screen interface and Mitch & Company seem responsive to user suggestions & complaints though i'll see if all the promised updates materialize.
Odyssey can also handle 4 inputs and give you a quad split and switch them to an external recorder. Son it will be able to record the switch directly - Quite cool for multicamera shoot.
I often put FS7 SDI 1 & 2-wLUT to the Odyssey so I can switch between LUT & pure Slog

There are other pros & cons to Small HD vs Odyssey.
Small HDPro7 LED has terrible color - avoid - whites are green!

I'm pumped for NAB, the SmallHD 502 and the new Video Devices monitor/recorders are just what I've been waiting for - lightweight, 5" monitors with full 1080p resolution and excellent monitoring features. Just what I want for onboard monitoring.

Len ..fyi my dp6 has the same panel as your tvlogic.

it is now clear in my head that I want to replace the Evf with a small monitor or flip efv

that rules out the oddesy 7 Dp7 and gratical

my options seem to be the little transvideo or the upcoming smallhd dp5

i need luts and wfm.. Any comments?

grug .. Exactly 1080 and tiny is what I'm excited about :)

edit and thanks for the reminder on the VidDev option.

25p yes and I don't think there's hardly any lag or motion issues. I haven't noticed any during jobs so far. The Ikan is not the most featured packed monitor but I appreciate the RGB parade and movable pixel 1:1. It's also sleak and I have a BP-U batttery mount so that I can use the same batteries as the FS7 and only use one charger.

I had issues with the SDI input due to BNC adapters expanding the center pin on the monitors connector which resulted in a glitch. But once I pinched the pin tight the issue hasen't appeared since. I also didn't like the non existing screen protection and the way the Ikan sunhood mounted so I modified mine a bit to suit me. Added an acrylic clear glass on the front and velcro on each side to hold the sunhood.

Sam - i don understand the desire for smaller - I just figured my aging eyes and 4K - maybe 7" isn't so bad.
No way to tell about a monitor till you see it in person though - everybody has different standards and taste and merely saying a monitor has certain features doesn't mean they're executed properly.
Atre you going to NAB - a great way to see these guys in person. I'll be there next week and will let you know what i see if you miss it.
I'm very picky about monitors though. Very few can just pass the color peaking test for accurate focus - they usually overdue it and thus are useless.

By the way how can 5.6" and 6" have the same panel?

My desire for smaller is basically a replacement for the EVF.. keeping the mass, footprint and the power consumption low - often my work I might be working in small spaces, jumping in/out of cars etc. I also find a big monitor obscures forward vision. I operate both eyes open and like to see the environment so I can plan my next move or avoid any hazards.

If the sony EVF actually met its paper spec.. (WFM, LUT support) I would not look to replace it.

In my ideal setup I would probably have a bigger monitor too for studio/sticks work too.

The DP6 uses the same 5.6 in panel as the TVlogic. Both are 800PX res. Im now interested in the new breed of 1080 res 5in mons that are coming to market... Or the 800px alphatron EVF, now dated, that is getting cheap.. but I guess no LUTs.

I really want a lut to add contrast to the image to aid focus (and give a client a non flat vision..) If I have a lut supported monitor I can feed that LUT out to a client viewing a cheapo SID monitor like the liliput that ossie uses.
