FS7: Monitor thoughts

I am hoping they keep it around the price of the DP4. Anything above $1000 and it starts to get a bit too much for me. Hopefully I am right because I think it would fit perfectly with the FS7 and be a great alternative to the Zacuto's $3000 EVF.

Im worried it might be high end $ or not robust enough

I guess someone needs to grab one at NAB.

They also have a bluetooth switch for finger control.

Basically this hits all of my wants if it is any good... and available in time for me!

Not released yet, and not quite as large as most of the other options discussed here, but given it's I/O, 3D LUT support and general design flexibility, this has already given me a twinge of regret that I already jumped on the Gratical HD bandwagon.

Could be worth considering if you can afford to wait.

The fact that it supports 3D LUTs is already the magic feature for me. It was extremely painful to find out that the Gratical only supports 1D LUTs AFTER I bought it- ugh!

since the magicians at Stoney don't seem too concerned with the monitor luts...i was hoping nab might bring some contenders to market... and yes, this is very promising - if not over priced.

This 1080 TV logic seems interesting. With its own waveform one could use LUTs (in camera, no HFR or playback) but it seems nice and simple small light and full 1080 resoluton, lack of luts is the only downside.

TVLogic VFM-058W

is the version you have Len?

The transvideo.. it is 720p, no luts and 2200EU with a loupe. I like transvideo but that is a bit steep for 720 with no focus check (I dont feel the need for focus check with 1080!)

The smallHD? I dunno, Im guessing the price might be a problem.

So I think my DP6 is falling apart - it was part of my woes on my shoot last weekend.

Might be time for a new monitor.

the monitor would ideally..

-Support Luts in all modes and frame rates
-Offer an RGB waveform, ideally switchable between LUT and Source (seeing the LUT RGB would give a better concept of colour)
-Be small and light.
-have a kick ass sunshade
-have HDMI out to feed my DP1x director monitor?

Personally I feel the O7q is a bit bulky - DP7/TVlogic is a better size.

There are some arguments for the 07q of course, but the media is a bit costly

Check this out! Coming to NAB https://www.smallhd.com/lp/sidefinder/
This looks to be a very interesting alternative to the FS7 EVF. The FS7 EVF is not bad but I think this will be a better solution for doco shooters.

Yeah, the new SmallHD is a really cool concept. Might be pricey, but would be my first contender at this point. So nice to have an EVF and a 5 inch monitor in the same thing.

$1500 for the Sidefinder + 502. Yikes!

Hmmmm... that's not that bad actually IMO. I predicted about $1600 and it's under that.. Considering the Alphatron is only $100 less and the Small HD seems way better at least on paper and in the advertising. The similar concept F5 / F55 EVF is 2x the price.

I'm saving for another camera soon that will require and EVF and the SmallHD just might be the ticket.

Well for those of us who can wait... I can only hope that more and more log (and here nodding to the mk II) cameras entering the marketplace can only mean more small (and big!) monitors & evf coming to market soon with the LUT feature/ability. As a fs7 owner, I am not waiting for Sony to perfect this in any firmware version release soon enough - especially for that sometimes important playback lut.

So to conclude the DP5 is 'available' and I have ordered one :)

Why?
Luts
Small Size
High Res
SDI
OK-ish price (half of the 720p transvideo)
Ability to run without EXT batts if required (actually it is not clear how it will work with external batts)

Apparenty focus mag by BlueTooth switch.. this is big if it works and actually the 'killer app' for solo operation.

Lets hope there are no £500 SDI 1920 monitors announced at NAB

To be honest, I would rather just spend the extra money and get a 7Q. Way more function. I think I can make due with my viewfinder for now. Was really hoping this would clock in around ~800 range with the Sidefinder. I understand what they are doing with this monitor just was hoping for a lower price point.
