moire/alliasing with gh2

Shot some high detail stuff today. I'd agree that when the bitrate can't hold up the image (unlike a 40mbit GH13) it "kinda" looks like aliasing; but it's not. It's the data rate bleeding out.

Example, in this shot it looks like the planks on the far wall has aliasing along the lines, but it's simply too much information for the codec to handle with the light from the cealing producing fine gradients (+all the rest eating out bitrate, leaves on the floor, moving trees outside, etc).

So until a higher bit-rate hack is possible, the alternative for shots like this might be to rent or borrow and AF-100. ( either with or without an external recorder )

If you are seeing moire with your GH-2, then I suspect it's being caused by either camera settings ( everything but color saturation should be set to -2 when shooting video ) or post-processing, where down-scaling from 1080 HD to something smaller can induce hideous moire with some editors.

I'm not saying it is an issue, Most of the time, you don't notice it. I'm just saying the GH13 is better as far as moiree, artifacts and haloing. These artifacts are visible on dense foliage in several ways. Small leaves have haloing, extra lines and look a bit oversharpened. Also, motion, say in branches in the wind, is just not as smooth as it should be. Another place you see these artifacts is when videoing musicians, where the strings in motion don't look right. So I agree the the GH2 is good, and, in addition, a lot of these problems blend in on a big screen. I'm just saying the GH13 is better at this particular feature.
As for it being caused by the camera settings, I can assure you that it is not. I play the original file into my giant HD TV, and I have tried all the settings. You can of course turn the sharpening down in camera, but you still get the artifacts and haloing. Now, I'm reasonably sure that the moiree is better than most other cams, I'm just saying for me in certain situations I don't get smooth motion or panning on fine details because of the extra junk in the picture.
But, from five feet away, most of the time the picture looks great.

I think if you showed someone the GH2 and the GH13 on a big screen from 5 feet, they would pick the GH2. Ultimately it is the real world picture that counts. We notice it, because we are looking for it, but people like it. Like reverb.
