moire/alliasing with gh2

Hello good peeps. Recently picked up a GH2 - been a little suprised at times of the moire and alliasing issues. Either shooting exteriors/interiors. Initially I thought it was just on the lcd then projected the footage on my projector and sure enuf it's there. I know it would help if I posted the footage. But the ususual suspects of books in book case or brick walls, etc. Anyway.... My first post here. Thanks to everyone for being here :)

Welcome aboard.
Try using smooth film mode with detail and noise reduction set to -2 should help.

Thanks Rig,
I will certainly try as you suggest.
Is this still a common problem with the camera - brick walls, book cases, those kinds of patterns?
I'm not a DP but a writer/director. So I'm essentially a newbee with the camera.
Thanks.

Its a fact that GH2s have moire and aliasing more than ordinary camcorders,it is also a fact E-T-C is not lossless, the GH2 is fairly good but not perfect, for its price it can not be that, for me leaving out 25P is the one big sin.

Can you post an example of the moire? I've yet to pick anything up with my GH2, and I've thrown alot of situations at it that a canon would choke on...

same here! i TRIED to generate moire with my gh2 (shingles, bricks, wicker, etc...) never could make it happen. that was one of the things i really liked about it

Please show us an exampe of what you are talking about. I also have not seen moire so far with my GH-2.

My testing with a very sharp lens showed that the GH13 (Blackout-Powell) had less moire and artifacts than the GH2. The GH2 had more haloing as well. But 3 feet from the TV a lot of that junk just blends in.

Download the file and watch it on a big screen. Or go outside and do something fun :)

Haven't seen it yet, but I only got my gh2 yesterday. I've had it in literally every 550d (T2i) footage I shot and really got obsessed with it, so I wouldn't have missed it if it was there. From now on my biggest concern is banding - very ugly with GH2, not much you can do about it...

Yup. I'm seeing less banding now after switching to a japanese GH2, but that's most likely brain bollocks. AF100 has it too in 8-bit. I think the reason why we don't notice it the same way with the Canons is simply that it isn't 1080p, just an upscaled image. So, a proper, sharp 1080p makes the 8-bit color space more visible.

When using test targets virtually every camera shows some degree of aliasing and moire, even the $16,000 Sony F3 shows it.

Compared to any of the Canon DSLRs, the Panasonic GH-2 shows much less aliasing and moire. For example:

...To reduce moire with the GH-2, set contrast, sharpness, and noise-reduction to -2 when shooting, then modify your footage in post to achieve the look you are after.

thank you all for your responses. I don't have the camera in front of me right now - but will post some video tommorow. I'm glad to hear everyones positive reactions :) I feel so much better.

I'm reposting the below link from The Dingo - this is essentially what I was getting with my gh2. It wasn't a roof top but a brick bodega store front. :) But to repeat - what I was getting is what I see in the below link.

Yes but the GH13 has less moire, less haloing and less artifacts than the GH2, when using the 24p Blackout Powell patch. The GH13 just does some things better. And the GH2 does other things better.

After owning it for 3 months, I sold my Canon 60D mainly because of the moire/aliasing/low-resolution image it produced when shooting video. I've had my GH-2 since December and have yet to come across any subject where moire has been an issue.

If you are seeing moire with your GH-2, then I suspect it's being caused by either camera settings ( everything but color saturation should be set to -2 when shooting video ) or post-processing, where down-scaling from 1080 HD to something smaller can induce hideous moire with some editors. I still don't know what the best method of down-scaling is that will not produce moire, but at full resolution my images are fine. Here's a link to an Alister Chapman article discussing the same issue with the Canon T2i:
