I posted a poll a few days ago and now I can not find it.
It was a poll about using pirated software.

Why can't I find it.

Mods deleted it. That's the one thing that I hate about this forum. Threads will go poof if they're thought to be inappropriate in some way. I'm all cool and fine with locking them down and such but deleting a thread without explanation, not cool.

luis caffesse isn't a actual poster, it is the name assigned to the dvxuser black hole. any rogue threads that orbit too close to his gravitational pull are sucked in, never to be seen or heard from again. in fact, we only know of his prescence indirectly..in complaint threads such as these.

Piracy has always been against the rules guys. No surprise there. I don't know the thread you are talking about, but what you said it's about should be indicator enough.

No Piracy. We don't want to encourage piracy or really talk about it... for obvious reasons.

Just saw your thread... yeah... again. No piracy.

Piracy is illegal, and as such it should be obvious why we don't want you talking about it here as dvxuser certainly would not encourage folks to do illegal things, and definitely would not knowingly allow people to use our site to do illegal things.

No piracy has been a rule for as long as I can remember on this site.

Hope that clears it up for you.

Jason

you arrived just in the nick of time. i was seconds away from posting my manifesto, complete with a step by step guide to smuggling a dirty bomb into the US through mexico. once again, a potential disaster has been averted thanks to quick thinking and the steady hand of jason ramsey. :cheesy:

I'd be upset by those remarks if you weren't funny.
:)

Mr. Ramsey

Thanks for clearing that up. I hope my thread was in know why mis interpreted for encouraging piracy. I was appalled to find out how easy it seemed to be for my friends in this business to access non legitimate software titles.

I was curious as to the feelings of other "USERS".

I kept the poll anonymous and did not name any sites by name.

However I have the up most respect for this community of ours and I support the discretion of our moderators. Perhaps if this happens to others a quick PM could be sent explaining that the post violated a term of use.

Thanks for clearing that for me. I hope no harm done.

Please don't call me Mister :)

No worries, man. pm's don't always make it to folks when a thread is deleted, but you are always more than welcome to pm a mod and request information as to why your thread may have been deleted.

Jason

Guys, we don't delete threads just because we feel like it. We have long-standing rules for what's appropriate, and if a thread is deleted, it's because it violated one (or more) of those rules, not because we just got delete-happy. We don't always send PMs; we sometimes give people credit that they can figure it out for themselves.

As usual, life is grey, not black and white, and things inevitably get complicated. Have you seen any set of rules anywhere be so clear that there is no possible interpretation? Same here. The issue is not breaking the rules when it is a clear-cut case. Issues arise when a rule is subject to interpretation by reasonable persons - same standard as in the case of law. The mod is supposed to interpret the rules - and when it's a difficult case, that's when a PM from a mod is appreciated. Otherwise, the poster has no opportunity to grow in understanding of the rules. And believe me, careful as I am, I too have come up against rules here, the interpretation of which baffled the heck out of me - guidance in such cases is quite critical (like the rule about keeping things "positive" in tone... which is just about impossible to figure out - I got jumped on by mods for criticizing American-made cars, f.ex., "because that's too negative, and prevents success by members of this site", meanwhile rants and complaints about all kinds of other things are apparently fine... go figure).

I agree. And I've told them this many times before, but apparently they don't care what we think.

That's the sound of inevitability Mr Anderson...

Rubbish. We're human too, and do the best we can, and everyone makes mistakes. Making a comment like we don't care what you think is pretty baseless in my opinion. Especially when I know what (on the whole) goes on behind the scenes to try to make and keep this place great for the members and to create opportunities for the members day in and day out.

Yes, sometimes things do come up for interpretation, and if one wants to dwell on or single out a particular instance, I'm sure one could make any argument they wish. It's when people ignore the whole and focus on a single issue that it begins to be a little frustrating to hear comments like yours.

There is a lot of time and effort put in by folks here who get very little in return for their work in helping build this place. Mods and non-mods alike. This place has many freedoms and on the whole is much more tolerant than the majority of places out there, and yet we do have some rules and guidelines, and I can pretty confidently say that overall this place runs like a well-oiled machine. People get along for the most part... there isn't a terrible amount of bickering in comparison to other sites. We don't have that much of a problem with spammers like other sites. You can (professionally) say whatever you want about companies, even if they are sponsors. Sponsors don't dictate the content of the forum here. We don't forbid you from saying you didn't like a sponsors product, or from recommending another place to buy like many forums out there do, etc, etc, etc.

Generally these ill feelings stem from cafe threads that were closed and/or deleted. We like to give folks a place to chill and commune and hang out and talk about stuff, but sometimes the noise level in the cafe gets to be too much and we start thinning it out. We aren't a cafe site though. We try to be a filmmaking site. Recently we noticed an increasing trend of "rant" threads in the cafe. Folks posting complaining threads about anything under the sun. We wanted to discourage that and so have started thinning out some of those types of threads. I don't know about you, but I come here as a member to get away from the stress and b.s. of everyday life, not to read 100 threads about other peoples problems with their dog peeing on their floor, or whatever. I do understand that this is a community, and as such, sometimes people just need to get stuff off of their chest and they feel this a safe place where they can do that. I fully understand that, and we try to recognize that to an extent. But, endless rant threads about nonsense just gets to be too much and kinda fills the air with a negative vibe. Make sense?

And, for the record, just b/c you may see one of your threads go away, but not another one that you think violates the same standards that were pointed out to you, it does not mean that we think one is ok and another is not, or that we are picking them out of thin air.... There are over a million posts on this forum. It's kinda hard to read them all :)

Later,
Jason

Well I wonder if it would be possible to add some code to this forum such that when a mod deletes a thread the forum autogenerates a PM to the original poster with a standard message.

That would take away a lot of the "dude were is my car/thread {insert other missing object}?"

And... if the orginial poster still wants to discuss the matter further then a reply to the mod and a brief chat should clear any remainding issues.

Now I better hide, I hear Agent Smith's footsteps eek. :D
