Garbled Video From Firestore Drive

NoProblem

I shot for the first time with the P2 today (it is amazing). But when I try to import the video from the firestore drive it is coming out as a garbled video rainbow with stuttering sound. It plays back on the camera from the firestore drive just fine so I am assuming I am doing something fundamentally wrong. Is there a codec I need to download or do I need to recompress the video? Thanks for your help.

Kinda hard to tell about knowing more about your system and software, and what you are doing...

What type of computer, what editing software, how are you importing the footage... did you do an "organize P2" process on the firestore first?

I did organize P2 on the FS100 and it said complete. When I go to import them into final cut it tells me that it cannot find a P2 volume even though the drive is mounted.

You may need to find the FS's volume manually. It doesn't show up automatically like a P2 card does. Not sure why, but I assume it's looking for a "card" and the FS-100 shows up as a generic FireWire drive.

Are you ingesting from the FS-100 directly or are you copying the CONTENTS folder the LASTSHOT.txt over to your media drive first? Works both ways just fine for me, but try copying to a hard drive first.

When you say it plays back weird, is this in the Viewer when you open it from the Browser? Or in the Canvas when you play back from the Timeline? Or in the new P2 Import window when you're ingesting the footage?

When I try to select the FS drive manually in P2 Import it tells me in cannot find a P2 volume. It doesn't recognize it as a volume only as an external drive. Also I cannot find a LASTSHOT.txt anywhere. Perhaps this is my problem?

Ok, FCP WILL find the FS-100, I do it everyday, it does work. You want to point FCP to the CONTENTS folder on the Firestore. Or copy the CONTENTS folder and the LASTCLIP.txt. Sorry, not lastshot, lastclip. Both will be there on the FS-100.

In FCP, I'm using 5.2.1 (You really do need to tell us what version you're on!), I open the P2 window. I'm going to open the dialog box that allows me to search for my P2 data. I'm going to point it to the FS-100 hard drive, then to the CONTENTS folder.

IF you copy the data to your hard drive, put both the CONTENTS folder and the LASTCLIP.txt file in a folder by themselves. Then you can point FCP to the CONTENTS folder in that location. FCP will indeed import from there.

You still didn't answer the very important questions, like WHERE are you seeing this garbled footage?

I am seeing the garbled footage in finder, sorry I realize that it is because it hasn't been decompressed yet or whatever. I am using FCP 5.0 not 5.2.1. But there still is no Lastclip or lastshot anywhere on the FS drive. Is there something I need to do to create this file after shooting or should it be automatic? I did organize P2, which created the contents folder but no lastclip.txt or lastshot.txt was created. Also when I did organize p2 and it created the contents folder there is nothing in the subfolders. There are no MXF files in the video or audio folder. Did I miss a step when I did organize P2 after I finished shooting. I directed the P2 Import to the contents folder on the drive and I even copied all files to my external drive but neither will be recognized. Thanks I really appreciate the help.

I don't see any MXF files in the contents folder. All the video data is .dv files in one folder called 20060929-161135-01 the contents folder has nothing in it and there is no lastclip.txt file to be found. I think the problem might be that I recorded as RAW DV on the FS100 instead of P2. Is there anyway to solve this issue?

If you recorded raw DV, you'll probably be able to locate the files somewhere on the FS (using search by size...) and play them back from quicktime...

They won't be HD, though...

Gunleik

I have done some research and there is RAW Dv converters but they are all for PC does anyone know how to convert RAW DV on a mac?

Does the files play back on the firestore?
If they do, I would hook it up to FCP and capture through the Log and Capture window.

If you record in RAW DV, then you have RAW DV files, not P2 files. You're stuck with it. Sorry. Copy the .dv files to your hard drive, open in QuickTime Pro, export in the format you need to use. You can also use Compressor for this operation, also, I believe.

RAW DV and P2 are very different formats...

Actually it sounds like the fFirestore has written DVCPRO HD data into a RAW .DV file., this is not a format Quicktime supports, so if it indeed is DVCPRO HD. Playing it back on the firestore and capturing in FCP is the only option...

Yeah I know this now. Thanks alot. I am teaching myself the camera so I guess I must go through these mistakes.

The files do play backfrom the firestore drive so can I just open log and capture with the FS100 plugged in and playing and FCP will recognize this playback?

Thanks for the help.

Yes, that should work. I think you have to set device control to Non controllable, and of cause match the format to the format you shot in.

Also be sure to update the firestore firmware if you are running and older version. There are quite a few bugs in the earlier ones....

FCP won't recognize playback directly from the FS-100, as the FS-100 is not a playback device. Besides, the QuickTime DV file is there on the FS-100, and you'll need something that supports it. I just tested this, and QT won't play it back properly. FCP won't read a video stream from the FS-100 like it does from a camera.

There's no way to get the playback on the camera to go back out to FCP, as Panasonic crippled the FW buss on the camera, so nothing it recieves from the FS-100 will go out any other HVX ports.

So, you have a RAW DV file you need to find some way to translate into a regular DV flavored format. I've never had to work with that file format, so I'm not sure what your options are. But you can't play back directly from the FS-100 to FCP at all.

You sure can playback into FCP.
Just hook it up to the camera FW port instead of the computer FW port on the firestore. Then hit play all and capture in FCP.

I just updated the firmware on the FS100 and it is capturing as a playback device!!! Thank you so much. I wouldn't expect this to work but it does. You are seriously saving my life. The trick is plugging the firewire into the DV port.
