i ascribe to a more simple solution for those whose thread is deleted. it's a technique i like to call "get over it". :nads:

I'm sure a red pill and a blue pill would make a magenta pill (technically speaking),

The only time I would be pushing pills or dealing in drugs would occur behind a pharmaceutical counter.

As usual, life is grey, not black and white, and things inevitably get complicated. Have you seen any set of rules anywhere be so clear that there is no possible interpretation? Same here. The issue is not breaking the rules when it is a clear-cut case. Issues arise when a rule is subject to interpretation by reasonable persons - same standard as in the case of law. The mod is supposed to interpret the rules - and when it's a difficult case, that's when a PM from a mod is appreciated. Otherwise, the poster has no opportunity to grow in understanding of the rules. And believe me, careful as I am, I too have come up against rules here, the interpretation of which baffled the heck out of me - guidance in such cases is quite critical (like the rule about keeping things "positive" in tone... which is just about impossible to figure out - I got jumped on by mods for criticizing American-made cars, f.ex., "because that's too negative, and prevents success by members of this site", meanwhile rants and complaints about all kinds of other things are apparently fine... go figure).

In this case, there was no ambiguity.

In this case, there was no ambiguity.

To clarify: I wasn't talking about this case (actually I haven't seen the thread in question), I'm talking generally, since several posters also generalized from this. It's simply an opportunity to explore ways in which the site might become even better. For example, in ambiguous cases, a PM from a mod might be highly desirable (this was my point). In general however, personally I think we need the rules to be revamped for greater clarity. Example: not speaking of this exact thread, but let's say someone wants to discuss the impact of piracy on, say, the software industry (not advocate or promote in any way). Is it allowed or not? Since I don't know, I'd rather not go anywhere near it - that inhibits discussion across the board.

I personally think this has gotten out of hand. Jason Adams had a legitimate question that was answered. Could he have PM'd Ramsey? Sure. Is this thread starting to go the way of other deleted threads because of conflict? I'd say so. Maybe the rules should be clarified, maybe we should use common sense. There have been times when I have said things that make people angry and lead to threads being closed that have made me wonder why it wasn't done so before. Was there a bias? I don't know. Do I complain? No. Am I saying there is or was? Of course not. Rules are subjective, and they have to be in order for a community to function.

Now, don't make me say something insane that will surly get this thread shut down. Be civil. Don't make gross statements like "the mods don't care about us" because I met several of them this past weekend (including Jason, Barry, Larry and JDS) and they could not care more about keeping this community a fun and informative place for all involved. They work their asses off so that we can come here and ***** about loosing equipment and having bad expiriences with online companies.

Well said Nick :)

Exactly! I also had one of my threads closed in the past and I wondered what happened. What I learned back then is, that you should not worry about it or get upset. It's just a thread, nothing more :) Get over it! Just accept that some things can't be discussed here. And even if the rules are not so clear, so what? When the thread gets closed, you know it and just move on.

i totally agree. okay, maybe jack doesn't care, but the rest of them do...

Hey hey hey simmer down folks...

My reason for posting this was to find my missing thread not open a debate about the policies and procedures of this site and its moderators.

I learned something from this thread that I did not know. A thread that violates terms of use will be deleted without notification. If I had known that I would not have asked this question in a public forum, I would have just PMd a Moderator and inquired about the missing thread.

I think that making statement like moderators don't care is a bit harsh and unappreciative of these guys who VOLUNTEER their time to bring us this place that we all love so much.

So thanks Jason for explaining this policy to us. As the creator of this thread I consider my question answered in full and it may be best for everyone to lock this thread so that we do not get too far off subject.

I appreciate everyone's thoughts and opinions, but I think it is in our best interest to close this one down.

Thanks

J

Rubbish. We're human too, and do the best we can, and everyone makes mistakes. Making a comment like we don't care what you think is pretty baseless in my opinion. Especially when I know what (on the whole) goes on behind the scenes to try to make and keep this place great for the members and to create opportunities for the members day in and day out.

Yes, sometimes things do come up for interpretation, and if one wants to dwell on or single out a particular instance, I'm sure one could make any argument they wish. It's when people ignore the whole and focus on a single issue that it begins to be a little frustrating to hear comments like yours.

There is a lot of time and effort put in by folks here who get very little in return for their work in helping build this place. Mods and non-mods alike. This place has many freedoms and on the whole is much more tolerant than the majority of places out there, and yet we do have some rules and guidelines, and I can pretty confidently say that overall this place runs like a well-oiled machine. People get along for the most part... there isn't a terrible amount of bickering in comparison to other sites. We don't have that much of a problem with spammers like other sites. You can (professionally) say whatever you want about companies, even if they are sponsors. Sponsors don't dictate the content of the forum here. We don't forbid you from saying you didn't like a sponsors product, or from recommending another place to buy like many forums out there do, etc, etc, etc.

Generally these ill feelings stem from cafe threads that were closed and/or deleted. We like to give folks a place to chill and commune and hang out and talk about stuff, but sometimes the noise level in the cafe gets to be too much and we start thinning it out. We aren't a cafe site though. We try to be a filmmaking site. Recently we noticed an increasing trend of "rant" threads in the cafe. Folks posting complaining threads about anything under the sun. We wanted to discourage that and so have started thinning out some of those types of threads. I don't know about you, but I come here as a member to get away from the stress and b.s. of everyday life, not to read 100 threads about other peoples problems with their dog peeing on their floor, or whatever. I do understand that this is a community, and as such, sometimes people just need to get stuff off of their chest and they feel this a safe place where they can do that. I fully understand that, and we try to recognize that to an extent. But, endless rant threads about nonsense just gets to be too much and kinda fills the air with a negative vibe. Make sense?

And, for the record, just b/c you may see one of your threads go away, but not another one that you think violates the same standards that were pointed out to you, it does not mean that we think one is ok and another is not, or that we are picking them out of thin air.... There are over a million posts on this forum. It's kinda hard to read them all :)

Later,
Jason

I know how much hard work goes into running these things. I'm the admin of another filmmaking forum elsewhere on the web and I put a lot into it, get nothing in return, etc. The biggest difference is that I listen when the members make suggestions, even something as small as this. This rule in particular isn't a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but it's the principle of the thing. If multiple people are asking for something to change, it would be nice if you listened to them. That's all.

Hey bub, this forum is one of the most informative with some of the most responsive and dedicated mods. Do you really want to mess with it? One can have all sorts of minor quibbles, but overall, isn't the DVXUser experience one of the best on the net?

Not to say suggestions for improvement shouldn't be listened to... I just think that the setup here is probably just as close to perfect responsiveness as practically possible, and shouldn't be faulted.

again. suggesting that we don't listen is simply being misinformed. That's not the case. I've personally exchanged countless pm's with various folks. Some have led to change. Some have led to nothing. Some have led to greater understanding from both sides, others have led to greater misunderstanding.

We listen. But, you can't please everyone. And, if we spend all of our time trying to please everyone we would lose sight of the bigger picture.

Jason.adams. No worries, man. Kinda' expected it, and sometimes people just need to vent. About the piracy topic in particular, it does appear that there is no set in stone written policy on it. An oversight on our part. It's just something that's always been stated when the topic comes up. Discussing the negative effects of piracy on us as professionals is one thing. Posting a poll asking members if they have/have not engaged in piracy is another.

I do listen, as do many others here. And, to suggest otherwise is a case of not seeing the big picture and not recognizing that the vast majority of change here has come as a direct result of what the members wanted, or a result of a growing trend in behavior that we wished to discourage for what we believe to be the betterment of the forum at large and the members as a whole.

If someone has an issue that they would like raised, there are proper and appropriate ways to do so in order to have the best chance of your case being heard and responded to in kind. but, if you go about making rash remarks about how we don't listen and you hate the forum for it... well, don't expect us to want to listen to that. That's just not how you get things done.

You guys can feel free to vent away if you like. I'll be off doing other things :)

later,
Jason

Indeed. That we may not have done what some people wanted doesn't mean we don't listen. We've got nearly 40,000 members. It would be impossible to do everything anyone wants.

The idea that we ignore the membership is ludicrous.

Mods deleted it. That's the one thing that I hate about this forum. Threads will go poof if they're thought to be inappropriate in some way. I'm all cool and fine with locking them down and such but deleting a thread without explanation, not cool.

Dude, pretty much any forum you visit on the series of tubes will have that... or at least, IMO, any good forum. (To me, it's the well-moderated forums that are the most worth going to.) Honestly, people get away with a lot more here than at some other forums I frequent.

No, David, it is not. I have been sending Jason 100 PM's an hour asking to be a mod and he never listens. What's worse is, after just 5 hours I had to clear out my PM box in order to continue with my demands.

:D What? A guy can't try and lighten the mood?

Man Total Hijack...I understand if some want to debate the policies of this forum BUT THIS IS NOT THE THREAD.

My question has been answered, I understand the moderators decision and I even support the decision.

Debates are great but lets start a new thread to debate these issues. This one has run its course.

You are right. But I tried to find the thread to talk about it, but a mod deleted it.

And regarding Penguin, why is it that the guy that makes the most sense in this thread is a 12 yr old boy?
