Minimum Requirments?

What are the minimum requirments on a MAC for editing DVCPRO HD. My MAC is a twin 1.25 Processor G4 tower(mirror door) 2gigs ram. No special cards. FCP 4.5HD. I have installed the P2 driver that came with the camera, but don't seem to see it anywhere. So is my system good to start?

FCP 5.x was the first version to support DVCProHD codecs.

Without those, you can't edit because the codecs are not supported.

Other than that, you are fine unless you purchase FCS2. At that point you are at the minimum

Actually FCP 4.5HD was the first, I have all of the DVCPRO HD choices in my menu list, I just don't see anything anywhere about importing P2. Does this mean I have to manually import? What I mean by that is drag and drop from the desktop disk images into my timeline?

Allthough you have DVPro HD choices in FCP 4.5 I'm pretty sure 5.1.2 is the minimum neccessary to import P2 files correctly to edit.

You might want to consider p2 Log Pro.

That permits you to export footage from a p2 card without importing it into FCP through the p2 import/log/transfer.

They go out as QT DVCProHD.

Don't know if it will work, but the web site has a demo, and at least you can test the workflow.

It'll save you upgrade cost of FCP.

The history, as I remember it:

4.5 added DVCPRO-HD and firewire capture capability. You can use 4.5 with an HVX, but not from the P2 media. You can use log & capture to import footage. Obviously this would not work with pN modes.

5.0 added P2/MXF support for standard-def, but not high-def. Remember P2 cameras came out first in standard-def; the SPX800 and SPC700 were out quite a while before the HVX200 (the first high-def P2 camcorder). So version 5.0 added the Import->Panasonic P2 function, but it does not work with HD files.

5.0.4 added HD support to the P2/MXF support. This was the first version that works fully with the HVX. Lots of miscellaneous bugs, but this is the bare minimum version if you want to work with the HVX.

5.1.2 added the P2 import window

5.1.4 fixed a few things, and I think it added background importing

6.0 changed the P2 import window to "Log & Transfer"

I just wanted to add that the wealth of information on this site is staggering, and the best part, is that its free too one and all. Its like having all the volumes of the Encyclopedia DVX/HVX right at your finger tips, and no annoying salesman came to call.
